No evidence cited here establishes that BYD is a scam, let alone the biggest one in automotive history. BYD reported substantial 2024 revenue and profit, and Xinhua reported strong vehicle sales. Those figures are not proof that every transaction was sound; equally, allegations repeated by a secondary article are not proof of fraud. The headline is a claim to test, not a verdict supported by the evidence available.
What the headline is alleging
The phrase “biggest scam in automotive history” implies deliberate deception on an extraordinary scale. The MoneyRadar video published July 18, 2025, used that framing and its description raised claims about hidden debt, sales inflation, recalls, and labor issues. A claim that serious requires evidence from underlying financial records, regulators, or documented investigations—not just a provocative title or a list of accusations.
What BYD reported for 2024
BYD’s investor-relations page reports 2024 revenue of RMB 777.102 billion and net profit attributable to shareholders of RMB 40.254 billion. These are company-reported financial results; the figures alone do not establish that the company committed misconduct or that it did not.
| Measure | Reported figure | What the cited source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | RMB 777.102 billion in 2024 | BYD’s investor-relations page reports this company result. |
| Net profit attributable to shareholders | RMB 40.254 billion in 2024 | BYD’s investor-relations page reports this company result. |
| New energy vehicle sales | 4.272 million in 2024, up 41% year over year | Xinhua, in reporting hosted by Shenzhen Government Online, reported the figure from BYD’s annual report. |
BYD’s January 1, 2025, production and sales announcement says its volume data are unaudited and may be adjusted or finally confirmed. That qualification applies to the sales-volume announcement; it should not be stretched into a claim about the status of every figure above. The reported sales total is evidence of reported volume, not an independent audit of every vehicle transaction.

Which allegations remain unverified here
A News Wheel article published September 4, 2025, repeats claims attributed to a January 2025 GMT Research report, including estimates about debt and long supplier payment periods. It also repeats claims concerning “0 km used cars,” government support, recalls, and labor conditions. The article is a secondary account: it establishes that these claims have been reported, not that the underlying claims are true.
The available material does not include the original GMT Research report, the relevant regulator recall notices, primary labor-investigation documents, or primary records supporting the alleged subsidy totals. Without those records, figures or conclusions drawn from the allegations should not be presented as established facts. In particular, the evidence here does not prove hidden debt, sales inflation, a sales scheme, or imminent collapse.

What would establish whether the claims are true
A credible assessment would test each allegation against records that can be checked independently, using consistent definitions and periods:
- Debt and supplier financing: the original GMT Research analysis and its definitions, compared with BYD’s annual-report notes on trade payables, financing, and cash.
- Government support: primary grant and subsidy records, with the categories and period clearly defined.
- Recalls: regulator notices naming affected models, defects, and remedies—not an unqualified count of recall events.
- Labor conditions and sales practices: official investigation records or other primary documentation that identifies the conduct, parties, and findings.
- Sales: evidence that distinguishes deliveries from registrations and inventory, and explains how any alleged inflation was measured.
Comparisons with other automakers would also need like-for-like measures: audited revenue and profit; cash, borrowings, and supplier payables defined consistently; sales measured on the same basis; recalls considered in light of fleet size and severity; and government support counted on a comparable basis. The cited material does not provide enough comparable evidence to rank BYD against competitors on those measures.

Verdict: the evidence does not support the headline
The company-reported results and Xinhua’s sales reporting do not disprove possible wrongdoing. But the allegations repeated by The News Wheel, without the underlying report or primary records, do not prove it either. On the evidence described here, calling BYD “the biggest scam in automotive history” is unsupported. A defensible conclusion would require verifiable evidence of specific deception and its scale, not growth figures on one side or unverified allegations on the other.
