Consumer Reports calls its 2017, 2021, and 2025 RDX assessments “about average” compared with vehicles from those respective model years; those separate assessments are not a full-run ranking. For a used RDX, weigh the specific vehicle’s service history and condition, then check its recall status by VIN before you buy.
Is there a best Acura RDX year for reliability?
Not on the evidence available here. Consumer Reports describes the 2017, 2021, and 2025 RDX as “about average” relative to vehicles from each corresponding model year. That does not show that the three RDX years are equal to one another, or that any one of them is the most reliable across the model’s history.
Consumer Reports’ reliability history is based on its latest subscriber survey. Its 2025 RDX page says the survey covered about 380,000 vehicles and assessed 20 potential trouble spots. Those figures describe the survey’s overall scale and scope—not the number of RDX owners surveyed or a failure rate for a particular RDX year. See the 2025 RDX reliability page, accessed October 8, 2026.
What the available model-year evidence says
| Model year | Consumer Reports assessment | Recall information on the cited page |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 | About average compared with vehicles from the 2017 model year. Consumer Reports | One NHTSA recall reported on the cited page. This count is not a reliability score and may not reflect current VIN-specific status. |
| 2021 | About average compared with vehicles from the 2021 model year. Consumer Reports | Three NHTSA recalls reported on the cited page. This count is not a reliability score and may not reflect current VIN-specific status. |
| 2025 | About average compared with vehicles from the 2025 model year. Reliability history is based on subscriber surveys and covers 20 potential trouble spots. Consumer Reports | Not stated on the cited reliability page. |
These are snapshots of different model years, not a controlled comparison or a complete ranking. Recall counts concern safety campaigns; Consumer Reports’ reliability assessment reflects survey information. Neither should be substituted for the other, and neither establishes the condition of an individual used vehicle.

Check recalls on the exact RDX you are considering
Recall information for a year, make, and model is general. NHTSA says a VIN or license-plate lookup can show whether a particular vehicle needs recall repair; a year/make/model search may include information that does not apply to every vehicle. Use the NHTSA recall lookup and ask the seller or Acura dealer whether any listed remedy has been completed.
2019 fuel-pump recall
In an Acura bulletin dated September 30, 2022 and hosted by NHTSA, American Honda Motor Co. described a fuel-pump issue affecting certain 2019 RDX vehicles: “Due to swelling of the fuel pump motor impeller, the fuel pump may seize and stop working. If this occurs, the engine may not start, or the engine could stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.” The bulletin describes the defect, but only a VIN check and repair records can establish whether a particular vehicle was affected and whether its remedy was completed. Read the manufacturer bulletin hosted by NHTSA.

2026 passenger seat-weight-sensor recall
A NHTSA notice dated 2026 covers certain vehicles across multiple Honda and Acura nameplates, including certain 2019–2024 RDX vehicles. It says a passenger seat weight sensor may crack and short circuit, potentially affecting airbag deployment. The model-year range alone does not establish that a specific RDX is included; check its VIN and confirm whether a remedy remains outstanding. See the NHTSA notice.
How to choose between individual used RDXs
When a buyer asks for a “sweet-spot” year, the most useful answer is often a comparison of the actual cars available, not a year label standing in for their condition. Evaluate these factors separately:

- Survey evidence: Use year-specific reliability assessments as broad context. The available Consumer Reports examples describe 2017, 2021, and 2025 as about average for their respective model years.
- Recall status: Run each vehicle’s VIN through NHTSA’s lookup and verify completed repairs with documentation.
- Service history and condition: Review maintenance and repair records, inspect for signs of neglected or incomplete work, and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. The cited year-level sources cannot assess a particular listing.
- Features: Compare equipment separately from reliability. Consumer Reports identifies 2007–2012 as the first RDX generation and says blind-spot warning became standard for 2022; neither fact demonstrates a reliability advantage. See its RDX overview.
Why complaint counts and recall totals do not rank reliability
NHTSA publishes complaints and recalls by vehicle year, make, and model. A complaint is a report alleging a problem; NHTSA may consider complaints alongside other information when reviewing alleged defects. A complaint count by itself is not a failure rate, and it does not prove that a model-year RDX is defective. Likewise, the recall counts shown on year-specific pages measure safety campaigns, not overall reliability. NHTSA explains its data in its data programs documentation.
The sources cited here do not provide a consistent, full-run table of comparable RDX reliability scores or long-term repair costs by model year. A precise overall ranking or “lowest-cost year” claim would go beyond what they establish.
