A compilation of company reports puts BYD at 2,256,714 passenger BEVs sold in 2025, compared with Tesla’s 1,636,129 vehicle deliveries. The gap remained in the latest reported quarter: in Q3 2026, BYD sold 762,478 passenger BEVs while Tesla reported 486,532 passenger-vehicle deliveries.
The figures show a change in sales ranking, not a complete verdict on which company is stronger. Understanding how BYD got there starts with separating battery-only cars from hybrids and looking at the market in which the companies compete.

The 2024 and 2025 annual figures come from CnEVPost’s compilation of company reports; the quarterly and nine-month figures are from its October 2, 2026 comparison. Tesla’s Q3 release, also dated October 2, reports 486,532 deliveries. The measures are not labeled identically: BYD’s figure is passenger BEV sales, while Tesla reports passenger-vehicle deliveries. Tesla says its production and delivery numbers represent passenger vehicles sold to customers, and cautions that deliveries alone should not be treated as an indicator of quarterly financial performance. What counts as an EV in this comparison?
The headline numbers can be confusing because BYD reports several vehicle categories. A BEV runs only on a battery and electric motor. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has an electric drive system and a combustion engine. China’s new-energy vehicle (NEV) category includes BEVs and PHEVs; some BYD totals also include commercial vehicles.

BYD reported 4.6 million NEVs sold in 2025, including overseas sales above one million. That broader total is not a like-for-like comparison with Tesla’s BEV deliveries. For the annual ranking, the relevant BYD figure is 2,256,714 passenger BEVs—not the 4.6 million NEV headline.
Sales, deliveries, registrations and wholesale shipments can describe different points in the route from factory to customer. The figures above retain the labels used in the cited reports rather than treating the measures as a single standardized dataset. How did BYD pass Tesla?
The figures establish when BYD moved ahead; they do not prove a single cause. The strongest supported explanation is a combination of broader product coverage, a technology base the company has built around both battery and hybrid vehicles, and expansion beyond its home market—set against Tesla’s lower deliveries in 2025.
It sells both battery-only cars and plug-in hybrids
BYD competes for buyers who want a fully electric car and for those who prefer a plug-in hybrid. That wider powertrain range gives it access to customers who are not ready to rely solely on battery power. It does not change the BEV comparison: PHEVs are not included in BYD’s passenger-BEV count.

It has a battery and hybrid technology base
BYD identifies its Blade Battery and dual-mode hybrid technology as core developments. Those company descriptions help explain the breadth of its lineup, but they are not independent comparative tests. They do not, on their own, establish that BYD has superior battery safety, range or charging performance.

It has expanded its international footprint
BYD says its NEVs had reached more than 120 countries and regions as of April 2026, and that overseas sales exceeded one million in 2025. These are company-reported measures of reach and sales; availability in a country does not establish a particular market share or level of profitability there. China is central to the market
The International Energy Agency says more than 13 million electric cars were sold in China in 2025, accounting for six out of every ten electric cars sold worldwide. A strong position in China therefore matters in a global sales race, although the available figures do not isolate how much of BYD’s lead came from any one market or factor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the wider market matters
The IEA estimates that global electric-car sales exceeded 20 million in 2025, 20% more than in 2024, and that electric cars represented 25% of the overall car market. Its “electric car” totals include both BEVs and PHEVs, so they describe a broader market than the battery-only BYD–Tesla comparison. The IEA’s 2026 outlook provides this market context: Global EV Outlook 2026.
Those market totals show the scale and momentum of electrification, not the share held by either manufacturer. They also help explain why BYD’s hybrid sales can matter to its overall business without counting toward a BEV-only ranking.
What the sales lead does—and does not—say about Tesla
Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K says automotive sales revenue fell 9%, in part due to approximately 8% fewer cash deliveries and a lower average selling price per unit. That provides business context for Tesla’s year, but it does not by itself explain the sales crossover or establish how the two companies compare in profitability. Vehicle volume is one measure of competition, not a complete company scorecard. The filing is available in Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K.
