Reuters reported that BYD would acquire a 20% stake in RÊVER Automotive. CnEVPost reported that the companies signed a share purchase agreement on July 6, 2024. Neither report establishes that the transaction later closed, so it is accurate to describe it as an announced agreement, not verified current ownership.
BYD’s Asia-Pacific auto sales general manager Liu Xueliang said, “We are thrilled to deepen our partnership to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and contribute to Thailand’s transition towards a more sustainable future,” Reuters reported on July 6, 2024. The statement describes the companies’ stated ambition; it does not establish subsequent results.
RÊVER’s role in Thailand
RÊVER was already BYD’s authorized distributor and after-sales service provider in Thailand before the investment announcement. In its August 8, 2022 launch announcement, RÊVER said BYD vehicle sales had begun in Thailand and described an investment exceeding 3 billion baht, alongside plans to develop a nationwide dealer and service network. Those were launch-era company statements and plans, not confirmation that the planned network was completed.

Reuters reported in July 2024 that RÊVER had more than 100 showrooms in Thailand. That is a contemporaneous reported count, not a current outlet total.
Why the announcement mattered to BYD’s Thailand expansion
The stake announcement came in the same week BYD opened its first Southeast Asian factory in Thailand. Reuters reported planned annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles and expected employment of 10,000 people. These were reported plans at the time; they should not be read as actual production or achieved employment.

Reuters also reported Counterpoint Research’s estimate that BYD held 46% of Thailand’s electric-vehicle segment in the first quarter of 2024, while ranking third in passenger cars. The 46% figure applies to that specific EV segment and quarter; it is not a current market-share figure.
Together, the factory opening and distributor investment point to two parts of BYD’s Thai presence: local manufacturing and an established sales-and-service channel. The sources support that context, but do not establish a specific motive for the investment beyond the companies’ stated intent to deepen their partnership.
What the announced partnership could cover
CnEVPost reported that the companies intended to expand cooperation beyond passenger vehicles into commercial vehicles. This was an announced intention, not evidence that the expansion took place. The available reports do not establish the later status of that plan or the transaction.
