BYD says its all-electric Yangwang U9 Xtreme reached 496.22 km/h—about 308.34 mph—at Germany’s ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg track on 14 September 2025. The automaker calls the run a global production-car top-speed record. The reported speed is clear; independent certification of this particular run is not established by the available sources.
How fast did the Yangwang U9 Xtreme go?
BYD reported a top speed of 496.22 km/h (approximately 308.34 mph) for the U9 Xtreme at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg on 14 September 2025. “308 mph” is a rounded conversion of that metric figure, not a separate reported measurement. BYD said the run surpassed the 490.484 km/h maximum of the quickest petrol-powered model.
BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said, “It’s terrific that the fastest production car in the world is now electric.” That is the company’s characterization of the result, rather than independent confirmation of the record category.
Was the 308 mph run independently verified?
BYD’s announcement reports the Papenburg speed and labels it a production-car record, but does not describe an independent certification procedure for the run. The figure should therefore be attributed to BYD rather than presented as independently certified.

The Nürburgring has published procedures for its own official lap-record attempts: calibrated timing, a notary present, inspection of standard conformity by TÜV Rheinland, and defined track length and start/finish lines. Those procedures apply to Nürburgring lap attempts and should not be taken as verification of the separate Papenburg top-speed run.
Is the U9 Xtreme a production car or a prototype?
BYD describes the U9 Xtreme as a production car and says it is being made available to customers in a limited series of no more than 30 units. It is an evolution of the U9 architecture; BYD previously referred to the variant as the U9 Track or Special Edition. The announcement does not give a price, ordering process, or region-by-region availability, so it does not establish where or how customers can buy one.

What makes the U9 Xtreme different?
BYD’s published specifications describe a track-focused electric hypercar with revised electrical, motor, tire, and suspension hardware. These are manufacturer-reported figures and features, not independently tested findings here.
- Electrical system: 1200 volts, compared with 800 volts for the U9 architecture cited by BYD.
- Battery: a lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery with a stated 30C discharge rate.
- Motors: four motors, each operating at up to 30,000 rpm, with combined output above 3000 PS.
- Chassis setup: track-level semi-slick tires and revised DiSus-X suspension.
BYD says Giti jointly developed the GitiSport e·GTR² PRO semi-slick tires for the car. Record driver Marc Basseng said, “This record was only possible because the U9 Xtreme simply has incredible performance.”

What was its Nürburgring lap time?
In a separate announcement, BYD said Moritz Kranz completed the 20.832 km Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:59.157 on 22 August 2025. BYD described it as more than five seconds faster than the previous electric super sports car class mark and the first sub-seven-minute lap in that class. This is a distinct lap-time claim, at a different venue and in a specific category; it is not the Papenburg top-speed record.
