The safest way to buy a used Tata Nexon is to verify the exact year, generation, engine, transmission and variant first, then confirm its VIN, recall status, service evidence and physical condition through an independent inspection. Do not treat a five-star crash rating or a clean-looking body as proof that a particular car is well maintained or undamaged.
Identify exactly which Nexon you are buying
Nexon equipment and driving characteristics vary substantially by model year and specification. Cars covered by the 2017–2020 generation guide use either a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol or 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine, while Tata’s 14 February 2024 announcement concerns the newer Nexon (ICE). Establish the following before comparing prices:

Verify the VIN, recalls and ownership documents
- Obtain the vehicle identification or chassis number directly from the car.
- Match it with the registration certificate, insurance policy and other ownership papers. Also match the engine number where recorded.
- Run the VIN through Tata’s official recall and service-campaign checker before paying a deposit.
- Record every open campaign and require completion, with documentary proof, before the sale is finalised.
Complete the paperwork checklist before payment:
- Seller’s identity and authority to sell.
- Original registration certificate.
- Insurance validity and claim history.
- Road-tax status and pollution certificate where required.
- Hypothecation or finance clearance.
- Service records, repair invoices and both original keys.
- A written sale agreement describing the vehicle, price, disclosures and handover items.
Ownership transfer must be completed through the applicable Indian transport authority. Procedures differ by state, so confirm the local process rather than relying on an informal undertaking.

Pay for an independent inspection
Arrange the inspection before committing money, and use a workshop independent of the seller. A professional electrical examination is particularly important: Autocar India has reported owner experiences involving drive-mode switching and infotainment flicker, but no authoritative source establishes a representative failure rate for Nexon electrical, clutch, gearbox or suspension complaints. Treat these as checks, not proof of a universal defect.
Engine and cooling system
- Inspect the car from cold; a warm engine can hide starting or smoke problems.
- Check cold-start behaviour, idle stability and throttle response.
- Look for blue, white or excessive black smoke.
- Inspect for oil or coolant leaks, low fluid levels and signs of overheating.
- Scan for stored and pending fault codes with workshop equipment. A consumer OBD2 scanner can help identify clues, but it is not a substitute for a complete workshop scan.
Clutch, gearbox and drivetrain
- On a manual, check clutch bite, slip under load, pedal feel and smooth gear engagement.
- On an AMT or DCA, test take-off, creeping, shifts, reversing and hill starts for hesitation, harshness or warning messages.
- Listen for drivetrain noises during acceleration, deceleration and tight turns.
Steering, brakes, suspension and wheels
- Check whether the car pulls to one side and whether the steering centres correctly.
- Brake firmly at different speeds; vibration or pulsation needs investigation.
- Drive over an uneven surface to identify suspension knocks.
- Listen for wheel-bearing humming that changes with speed or cornering.
- Inspect tyre age, tread depth, sidewall damage and uneven wear. Uneven wear can indicate alignment, suspension or accident-related problems.

Inspect for accident, flood and corrosion damage
View the body in daylight. Look for mismatched paint, overspray on rubber or trim, uneven panel gaps, replaced lamps and a windscreen date that does not fit the vehicle’s history. Check under carpets, in the spare-wheel well and around wiring for flood residue, mud, damp odour or corrosion. A polished exterior cannot establish that the car is accident-free.

Prove the service history and odometer reading
Request the complete service record, not only a stamped booklet. Invoices, job cards and dated odometer entries should form a continuous timeline. Compare the work performed with the owner-manual maintenance schedule, including tyre-pressure checks, tyre condition and rotation.
Tata’s extended-warranty terms state that benefits may be unavailable when scheduled servicing was missed, the vehicle was involved in an accident or unauthorised modifications were made. Those exclusions make missing invoices, unexplained mileage gaps, remapped engines, non-factory wiring and aftermarket safety-equipment changes commercially significant. Tata’s described extended-warranty product lists purchase eligibility up to 1 year 9 months and 45,000 km from the sale date; verify that the specific car and policy still qualify.

Understand what the safety ratings do—and do not—mean
Tata Motors said on 14 February 2024 that “the all-new Nexon (ICE) … has become the latest recipient of the 5-star rating (32.22/34 points) for adult occupant protection and 5-star rating (44.52/49 points) for child occupant protection from Global NCAP.” The Bharat NCAP fact sheet for its tested vehicle lists front airbags, electronic stability control, seat-belt reminders and side head-protection equipment.
These results apply to the tested model and specification, not every earlier Nexon or every trim. Confirm that the used car has the equipment expected for its exact variant. A crash rating also cannot certify the condition of an individual vehicle: deployed airbags, damaged sensors or poor repairs can materially change protection.
