Buying a Toyota GR86 With an Automatic Could Be Smarter Than You Think

A six-speed automatic can make the Toyota GR86 easier to live with in traffic. Here is what you trade in acceleration and manual involvement, and what to verify before buying.

Yes—an automatic GR86 can be the smarter buy if you expect stop-and-go commuting, prefer not to operate a clutch, or need a car that multiple drivers can use comfortably. It remains a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe with Toyota’s 228-hp 2.4-liter boxer engine, but the automatic gives up some acceleration and the hands-on involvement of the manual. The right choice depends on how you will use the car, not on a universal ranking of the two transmissions.

What you get with the automatic GR86

For the 2026 U.S. model, Toyota offers the GR86 with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The automatic includes paddle shifters, so you can request gear changes without operating a clutch. Both versions retain the car’s rear-wheel-drive layout and naturally aspirated 2.4-liter boxer-four, which Toyota rates at 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Toyota’s 2026 GR86 page

The automatic changes how you operate the car; it does not turn the GR86 into a different kind of vehicle. Whether paddle shifting supplies enough involvement is a matter of personal preference.

What the automatic gives up

In Edmunds testing reported by the Associated Press in 2026, the automatic was about one second slower from 0 to 60 mph than the manual. That report compares 2027 GR86 models, so it is a useful indication of the transmission tradeoff—not an official Toyota acceleration rating for the 2026 automatic. The manual was quicker in that cited test and gives the driver direct control of the clutch and gear selection. If acceleration or the physical routine of shifting is central to why you want a sports coupe, that difference may matter more than the automatic’s convenience.

How the two transmissions compare

Consideration Six-speed automatic Six-speed manual
Driving in traffic No clutch pedal operation; a practical fit if you prefer not to shift in congestion. Requires operating the clutch and changing gears.
Driver involvement Shifts automatically unless you intervene with the paddle shifters. Direct clutch and gear selection; how engaging that feels is subjective.
0–60 mph About one second slower than the manual in Edmunds testing reported by the Associated Press for 2027 models. About one second quicker in that same reported test.
Combined fuel-economy estimate 24 mpg, as reported by the Associated Press for the 2027 automatic. 22 mpg, as reported by the Associated Press for the 2027 manual.
Price Compare local quotes for the specific trim and transmission; Toyota’s listed base MSRPs do not establish a transmission-specific price difference. Compare local quotes for the specific trim and transmission; Toyota’s listed base MSRPs do not establish a transmission-specific price difference.
Insurance and resale The cited sources do not establish whether either transmission costs less to insure or has stronger resale value. Get an insurance quote for the car you are considering.

The 2027 combined fuel-economy figures above come from the Associated Press report of Edmunds estimates. They are not the same as the figures on Toyota’s 2026 trim page, which displays estimated city/highway fuel economy of 20/26 mpg for each listed trim without separating transmissions.

What a 2026 GR86 costs—and what the figures mean

Toyota’s 2026 U.S. model page lists starting MSRPs of $31,400 for the GR86, $34,000 for the Premium, and $36,365 for the Yuzu Edition. The page displays estimated fuel economy of 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway for all three trims. Those are trim-page figures, not a transmission-by-transmission comparison, and the listed starting prices do not show whether an automatic-equipped car costs more than a manual-equipped one. Toyota’s 2026 GR86 page

Toyota also displays a 0–60 mph figure of 6.1 seconds, but the retrieved page text does not clearly assign that number to a transmission. Do not treat it as the automatic’s specific result or use it to override the separate 2027 Edmunds comparison.

Is an automatic the better fit for your routine?

Choose the automatic if convenience matters most

An automatic is a reasonable choice if your GR86 will spend substantial time in stop-and-go traffic, you simply prefer not to work a clutch, or the car will be shared with drivers who want an automatic. These are buyer-fit considerations, not measured performance advantages. The paddles give you the option to request shifts while keeping clutch-free operation.

Choose the manual if shifting is part of the appeal

If you want to operate the clutch and select gears yourself, the manual aligns more directly with that preference. It was also quicker in the cited Edmunds test. Those are meaningful reasons to choose it, but they do not make the automatic a mistake for someone who values convenience more.

Do not decide on fuel economy alone

The Associated Press report gives the 2027 automatic a 24-mpg combined estimate and the manual a 22-mpg combined estimate. Toyota’s 2026 page, by contrast, displays 20/26 mpg city/highway for each listed trim without a transmission breakdown. Because these figures cover different model years and are presented differently, they do not establish a like-for-like 2026 automatic-versus-manual advantage.

Check the GR86’s everyday practicality before buying

Transmission choice will not change the basic compromises of a small sports coupe. In its comparison of 2027 models, Edmunds reported by the Associated Press lists 6.3 cubic feet of cargo volume and points to a shallow trunk opening, cabin noise at speed, and wired-only phone mirroring. Treat those details as 2027 comparison findings and confirm the exact equipment on a 2026 car. Associated Press report on Edmunds’ 2027 GR86 comparison

Before committing, picture the bags or equipment you actually carry and consider whether the cabin and trunk suit your routine. If comfort, cargo access, or phone connectivity is a frequent need, verify those details in the specific car rather than assuming the transmission addresses them.

A practical GR86 buying checklist

  1. Drive both transmissions if possible. Compare the automatic’s paddle-shift operation with the manual’s clutch and gear changes on the kinds of roads you use.
  2. Verify the exact car. Ask the dealer to confirm its model year, trim, transmission, and installed equipment; availability and specifications can vary by region.
  3. Compare out-the-door quotes. Request prices for the actual cars you are considering instead of inferring a transmission premium from Toyota’s trim-level starting MSRPs.
  4. Get an insurance quote. The cited comparisons do not resolve transmission-specific insurance costs or resale value.
  5. Assess everyday fit. Check the trunk opening and cargo space, listen to the cabin at speed, and verify phone-mirroring equipment on the car you may buy.
