Use the system that matches your phone and the equipment in your exact car. iPhone owners should start with Apple CarPlay, Android owners with Android Auto, while built-in navigation is the better choice when your vehicle offers useful native integration, local map storage or displays directions in the instrument cluster or head-up display. A car with Google built-in is a separate case: Google Maps and related services run in the vehicle itself rather than being projected from Android Auto.
There is no universal winner for map accuracy, safety or convenience. Features depend on the vehicle year and trim, country, phone, app, connection and (for some systems) a data plan. Confirm the equipment in the owner’s manual and the official compatibility lists before relying on any interface for a trip.

Built-in navigation is the manufacturer’s native system. Its screen, controls, map database and routing software are integrated into the vehicle, with exact functions determined by make, model, trim and market. Some systems store map data locally; others depend on connected services for traffic, map updates or online search. The owner’s manual is the authority for whether your car supports offline routing, voice control, traffic information, cluster directions or a head-up display.

Apple CarPlay
CarPlay connects an iPhone to a compatible vehicle display and presents a driving-oriented interface. Apple lists Apple Maps and supported third-party navigation apps such as Google Maps, Waze and TomTom. Depending on the car, you control it with a touchscreen, knob, buttons or touchpad, and Siri handles compatible voice requests. Apple describes the available controls and app categories on its CarPlay page.
Android Auto
Android Auto is the phone-based Android experience projected onto a compatible car display. The phone supplies the apps and services, while the vehicle provides the screen, audio and supported controls. Google describes navigation, communication and entertainment controlled by voice, but the available features and connection method still depend on the vehicle and the app. Check the Android Auto vehicle compatibility list for the exact make and model.
Google built-in
Google built-in is integrated into supported vehicles. Google Maps and other Google services run through the car’s own system rather than through an Android phone’s Android Auto projection. Google says functions vary by manufacturer, region and data plan. Supported vehicles may provide turn-by-turn directions, live traffic, alternative routes and, on some models, Google Maps in the driver’s dashboard. Details are documented in Google’s guide to navigating with Google Maps in cars with Google built-in.
Side-by-side comparison
| Question | Built-in navigation | Apple CarPlay | Android Auto |

| Which maps can you use? | The manufacturer’s maps; some vehicles also offer Google Maps through Google built-in. | Apple Maps plus supported apps including Google Maps, Waze and TomTom. | Compatible Android navigation apps; confirm support for the exact car and app. |
| Internet dependence | Varies by system. Some vehicles have local maps; connected traffic and search may need a service or data plan. | Apple says CarPlay Maps directions require an internet-connected iPhone and Location Services. | Phone and app connectivity determine available functions; offline behavior differs by app. |
| Vehicle-specific integration | Potentially deepest integration, including native controls and, on some cars, cluster or head-up directions. | Uses supported vehicle knobs, buttons, touchpads or touchscreen; capabilities vary by automaker. | Uses the vehicle display and voice interaction; supported features vary by model. |
| Best first fit | Drivers who value native controls, local map availability or vehicle displays. | iPhone owners who want Apple integration or a choice of navigation apps. | Android owners who want phone apps on the dashboard. |
This table describes documented platform capabilities, not a laboratory ranking. No head-to-head navigation-accuracy or safety test establishes that one option is universally better.
Choose by phone ecosystem first
Your phone is the simplest initial filter. CarPlay is for iPhone connections; Android Auto is for Android-phone connections. If a household uses both platforms, check whether the vehicle supports both interfaces and whether it supports wired, wireless or both connection methods. A compatible cable, USB port and phone operating-system requirements can matter as much as the vehicle’s screen.

Built-in navigation does not depend on carrying a particular phone for its core operation, although online search, traffic, map updates and connected services may require a subscription or data connection. Google built-in is also vehicle-dependent: having an Android phone does not automatically mean a car has Google built-in, and a car with Google built-in does not require Android Auto for its native Google Maps experience.
When built-in navigation is the better choice
You need vehicle-specific displays
Native navigation can be preferable when directions appear in the instrument cluster or head-up display, when the car’s physical controls are easier to use than a projected interface, or when the vehicle coordinates navigation with other driving information. Google notes that some supported cars can show Google Maps on the driver’s dashboard, but that feature is not universal. Verify it for the exact vehicle rather than assuming every trim has it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You want maps that remain available without a phone
A built-in system may keep map data in the car, which can be useful when a phone battery is low or a different driver uses the vehicle. Whether routing works fully offline, how often maps are updated and whether traffic remains available are model-specific questions. Read the manual’s navigation and connected-services sections before treating “built-in” as synonymous with offline.
You prefer one native interface
Some drivers want the factory screen, steering-wheel controls and audio source to behave consistently, without pairing a phone or changing cables. This can be a practical advantage for shared vehicles. The trade-off is that a manufacturer’s map search, update cycle and route options may be less familiar than the apps you use on your phone.
Built-in navigation is not automatically superior
Factory integration does not guarantee fresher maps, better routes or lower operating cost. Connected traffic, online destinations and map updates may depend on the vehicle’s service plan. Ask the dealer or consult the manual for the duration and scope of any included service, but do not assume a plan exists because the car has a navigation screen.

When Apple CarPlay is the better choice
It matches an iPhone-centered workflow
CarPlay keeps supported contacts, messages, music and navigation in an interface designed for driving. Apple Maps is available, and Apple lists Google Maps, Waze and TomTom among supported third-party navigation choices. That app choice can matter if you already save places, routes or preferences in one of those services.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt lets you use familiar voice and vehicle controls
Siri can handle compatible requests, while the vehicle’s supported knobs, buttons, touchpad or touchscreen provide a second control path. Set destinations and review the route before moving, then use voice or the car’s controls instead of handling the phone. Apple separately warns about distraction; CarPlay does not remove the need to follow local law and the owner’s manual. Apple’s overview of supported controls and apps is at apple.com/ios/carplay.
Know the connection requirement
For CarPlay Maps directions, Apple states that the iPhone must have an internet connection and Location Services enabled. Apple also notes that traffic information and estimated travel times are not available in every region. If your signal drops, do not assume the current route will continue to provide every online feature.
When Android Auto is the better choice
It puts Android apps on the car screen
Android Auto is the natural starting point for an Android owner who wants phone-based navigation, communications and entertainment on the dashboard. Voice control can reduce the need to touch the phone, but the precise app list, wireless capability and display behavior depend on the vehicle and software versions.
Do not confuse Android Auto with Google built-in
With Android Auto, an Android phone connects to a compatible vehicle and supplies the projected experience. With Google built-in, the car itself contains an integrated Google system. A vehicle can support one, the other or both. The distinction affects setup, phone dependence, data-plan questions and whether directions can appear in native vehicle displays.

Check app-specific offline behavior
Android Auto is a connection framework, not a promise that every navigation app works offline. Downloaded map regions, rerouting and traffic availability vary by app and connection. Confirm the app’s own requirements before starting a trip into an area with weak coverage.
Connectivity and offline navigation
CarPlay Maps
Apple’s support documentation says turn-by-turn directions through CarPlay Maps require an internet-connected iPhone and Location Services. This is a stated requirement for Apple’s Maps directions; it should not be generalized to every third-party navigation app. Regional availability also affects traffic and estimated travel times. See Apple’s CarPlay turn-by-turn directions guide.
Google Maps in a Google-built-in vehicle
Google supports offline navigation when you download map areas while connected. Offline mode covers only the downloaded region, does not provide real-time traffic, and the downloaded maps expire one year after download. Google says downloading offline maps requires a data plan. The full limitations are listed in Google’s offline-use guidance for cars with Google built-in.
Built-in manufacturer systems
Local map storage, online search, traffic and update schedules vary by vehicle. Look for explicit manual language such as “offline maps,” “connected navigation,” “online traffic” and “map update.” A system may route without a signal yet lose live traffic or destination search.

Android Auto and other phone apps
Because the phone and app provide the navigation service, battery level, mobile coverage, permissions and downloaded regions all matter. Test the exact app and connection before a long trip; do not infer offline support from the fact that the vehicle has Android Auto.

How to decide before you buy or rely on a system
- Identify the exact vehicle. Write down model year, trim, country or region and infotainment option. Two trims with the same screen size may have different navigation, wireless or dashboard features.
- Check official compatibility. Apple limits CarPlay to select cars and regions; verify your vehicle on Apple’s CarPlay and iPhone introduction. For Android Auto, use Google’s vehicle list at Android Auto Vehicle Compatibility.
- Check the phone and app. Confirm the phone’s operating-system support, Location Services, account sign-in and the navigation app you actually intend to use.
- Confirm the connection method. Determine whether the car supports wired USB, wireless projection or both, and identify the correct USB data port. A charging-only port will not establish a wired projection connection.
- Ask what works without service. Establish whether native maps, projected maps or Google-built-in maps can route offline, what traffic features disappear and how map updates are delivered.
- Inspect the driver’s view. If cluster or head-up directions matter, ask for a demonstration in the exact trim. A feature listed for a model line may be limited to a package or region.
- Decide how shared drivers will use it. For a shared car, consider pairing procedures, multiple phones, privacy and whether native navigation remains usable when no phone is present.
Setup instructions
Set up Apple CarPlay
- Park the vehicle and turn on its infotainment system.
- For wired CarPlay, connect the iPhone to the vehicle’s designated USB data port with a compatible cable. For wireless CarPlay, follow the vehicle’s pairing procedure, usually beginning with Bluetooth or a wireless-mode prompt.
- On the iPhone, accept the CarPlay request and allow the permissions needed for navigation, contacts and notifications.
- Open the CarPlay app launcher, select Maps or another supported navigation app, and set the destination before driving.
- If directions do not appear, check that Location Services and mobile data are enabled, the phone is unlocked for initial pairing and the cable or USB port supports data.
Set up Android Auto
- Park, start the vehicle and use the compatible USB data port or the vehicle’s wireless setup option.
- Pair the Android phone according to the car’s instructions, approve Android Auto permissions and update the required phone and vehicle software if prompted.
- Open the Android Auto launcher, choose the navigation app and download any needed map area while connected.
- Use the car’s microphone, steering-wheel controls or touchscreen for supported commands; keep the phone mounted or stored as required by local law.
- If the connection fails, test another data-capable cable, verify that Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment settings and confirm the vehicle appears on Google’s compatibility list.
Use built-in navigation or Google built-in
- Read the infotainment and connected-services sections of the owner’s manual for the exact trim and region.
- Complete the car’s account, privacy and data-plan setup if the system requires it for online search, traffic or map downloads.
- Open the native Navigation or Google Maps app and download the areas you may need before leaving coverage.
- Test a route with connectivity disabled while parked. Confirm what remains available and note that offline Google Maps lacks real-time traffic and downloaded areas expire after one year.
- Check whether directions reach the instrument cluster or head-up display and learn the physical controls before driving.
Compatibility and troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Likely checks |
|---|---|
| CarPlay or Android Auto does not appear | Confirm the exact model and trim are compatible, use the correct USB data port, try a known data cable, unlock the phone for first pairing and enable the interface in vehicle settings. |
| Maps cannot calculate a route | Check mobile data, Location Services, app permissions and account status. For Google built-in offline use, verify that the destination lies inside a downloaded region. |
| Traffic is missing | Offline modes do not provide real-time traffic. Region, connection and service-plan limitations can also affect traffic availability. |
| Directions do not show in the cluster or head-up display | That display may be unavailable on the trim, limited to native navigation or supported only by a particular interface. Check the manual rather than assuming projection supports it. |
| Wireless projection is unreliable | Confirm that the vehicle supports wireless mode, remove stale Bluetooth or Wi-Fi pairings, restart both devices and test wired operation. Exact recovery steps are manufacturer-specific. |
| Offline maps stop working | Confirm the downloaded region still covers the route. Google-built-in offline maps expire one year after download; refresh them while connected. |
Safety and practical use
Set the destination and review the route while parked. Once moving, use voice commands and the vehicle’s supported controls, keep the phone out of your hand and follow the owner’s manual and local distracted-driving laws. A larger screen or native integration does not prove that one system is safer than another; the available evidence does not establish a universal safety ranking.
Before a remote trip, carry a backup plan: know the destination address, charge the phone, verify coverage and download required map regions. If the route crosses regions with different traffic or map availability, expect online features to change.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use my car’s navigation or Google Maps?
Use the car’s system when its native controls, cluster or head-up display, or offline map storage solve a need you have. Use Google Maps through CarPlay, Android Auto or Google built-in when you prefer its supported app experience. The right choice depends on the exact vehicle, connection and region, not the app name alone.

Is Apple CarPlay better than built-in navigation?
For an iPhone owner who values familiar apps and Apple integration, CarPlay is usually the most straightforward starting point. Built-in navigation can be preferable when the vehicle offers deeper display integration or useful offline capability. Neither is universally better.
Can I use navigation without mobile data?
It depends on the system. Apple says CarPlay Maps directions require an internet-connected iPhone and Location Services. Google built-in can navigate with previously downloaded maps, but coverage is limited to the downloaded region, real-time traffic is unavailable offline and maps expire after one year. Other built-in systems and Android apps have their own rules.
Does Android Auto mean my car has Google built-in?
No. Android Auto projects an Android phone’s experience onto a compatible display. Google built-in is software integrated into supported vehicles and can run Google Maps without Android Auto projection. Check the vehicle specifications and manual for which system is installed.
Why does a feature work in one trim but not another?
Infotainment capabilities can vary by model year, trim, package, market, phone, app and data plan. Compatibility lists and marketing pages may describe a model family, so verify the exact vehicle and region and ask whether cluster, head-up display, wireless connection and offline functions are included.
The Bottom Line
Choose CarPlay for an iPhone, Android Auto for an Android phone, and built-in navigation when your specific vehicle’s native integration or offline maps are genuinely useful. Treat Google built-in as a separate vehicle-integrated option, and verify every important feature against the exact car, region, phone and data plan before relying on it.
