The Buick Electra Orbit pairs 1950s space-age styling with a futuristic, technology-focused cabin—but it is a design concept, not a confirmed production car. Introduced by GM China on August 5, 2025, it explores what a large, pure-electric Buick might look like without announcing a retail model or providing production specifications.
What is the Buick Electra Orbit concept?
GM China presented Electra Orbit as a design exploration of Buick heritage, futuristic technology, and pure-electric architecture. The concept was conceived and developed by the GM China Advanced Design Center; GM Technical Center Korea contributed artistic visualization. The announcement says it explores vehicle proportions, materials, and cabin innovation.
That makes Orbit a design study rather than a vehicle buyers can order. GM’s reveal does not announce production, a sale date, or a price, and it does not establish what will happen to the concept in the future.
What does the exterior look like?
GM says the design draws on spacecraft, jets, and Buick concepts from the 1950s. It describes a body nearly six meters long and more than two meters wide, with a low front, broad stance, extended streamlined rear, sculptural fenders, and 24-inch wheels. These are approximate design details in the reveal, not a complete certified specification sheet.
- Scissor doors: Dramatic upward-opening doors emphasize the concept’s show-car character.
- Deployable aerodynamic devices: GM says these are intended to optimize drag and downforce at higher speeds; the reveal does not provide measured aerodynamic results.
- Dual front trunk: A center-pivoting frunk opens to display custom luggage.
- “Space” finish: GM uses this name for the concept’s neutral metallic exterior color.
What is the cabin like?
GM describes a 2+2 cabin organized around an orbit theme. Its arch-shaped “Ring” display stretches from pillar to pillar. The instrument panel and steering wheel are designed to reconfigure for driving modes, while a wormhole-inspired interface is presented as an AI assistant. A spherical physical controller sits on the center console.
The cabin’s “Ground” theme contrasts an earth-red tone with custom brocade and fabrics, crystal accents, and what GM calls a “Digital Illusion Carpet.” These are proposed concept features; the reveal does not confirm that they will appear in a production Buick.

Is the Electra Orbit a production car, and what are its specifications?
No production plan is confirmed in GM’s announcement. The release offers no price, on-sale date, battery capacity, driving range, charging figures, or power output. The description “pure-electric architecture” signals the design direction, but it is not enough to establish a usable vehicle specification. Figures from other Buick electric vehicles should not be treated as Orbit specifications.
GM Vice President of Design for GM China and GM International, and Chief of Design at SAIC-GM, Stuart Norris, called it “a bold exploration of what Buick can be when we blend heritage inspiration with visionary innovation.” That framing is consistent with the reveal: Electra Orbit communicates a design possibility, not a confirmed upcoming model.
