Bugatti’s Chiron successor, the Tourbillon, replaces the quad-turbo W16 with an 8.3-liter naturally aspirated V16—but it is not combustion-only. Three electric motors add a combined 800 hp, bringing Bugatti’s stated total output to 1,800 hp. The result is a different take on the hypercar formula: a large, high-revving engine paired with substantial electric power.
What powers the Bugatti Tourbillon?
The Tourbillon pairs a naturally aspirated 8.3-liter V16 with three electric motors: two at the front and one at the rear. Bugatti gives the V16’s output as 1,000 hp and the motors’ combined output as 800 hp, for 1,800 hp total. The electric system is supported by a 25 kWh battery, which Bugatti says provides more than 60 km (37 miles) of all-electric range. These are manufacturer figures, not independent test results. Bugatti’s 2024 launch announcement outlines the powertrain and specifications.

Cosworth, which says Bugatti approached it in 2021 to design and manufacture the engine, gives the displacement more precisely as 8.35 liters. Its published engine figures also include a 9,000-rpm limit and an engine mass of 252 kg. Bugatti rounds the displacement to 8.3 liters. How does the V16 hybrid differ from the Chiron’s W16?

The defining change is not simply the number of cylinders. The Chiron’s W16 used four turbochargers; the Tourbillon’s V16 relies on natural aspiration and adds three electric motors. That makes the Tourbillon a hybrid system whose combustion and electric components together produce its published output, rather than a V16-only car. The comparison here describes the two cars’ powertrain approaches, not a controlled performance test.

Why did Bugatti drop the turbos?
Bugatti’s published explanation emphasizes a new powertrain concept: a naturally aspirated V16 with electric motors providing additional power and contributing to the car’s overall performance. The sources cited here do not establish a single definitive reason—such as emissions rules or a specific engineering constraint—for abandoning turbochargers, so it would be misleading to present one as the answer.
Sound is clearly part of the intended character. In a September 2026 account of the Tourbillon’s acoustic development, Bugatti describes balancing the engine’s character with cabin comfort and regulatory requirements. Romain Volatier, Bugatti’s Head of NVH & Acoustics, said: “Bugatti, from a sound perspective, has never had a very clean-sounding engine. It has always been a little bit dirty and raw, so we decided to keep that as one of the key points of the sound.” Bugatti’s account of the sound-development work also quotes vehicle-development driver Paolo Magrone on the importance of hearing engine speed rise in response to the throttle.

What performance does Bugatti claim?
Bugatti publishes a 0–100 km/h time of 2.0 seconds and a top speed of 445 km/h (276 mph) for the Tourbillon. Those are the manufacturer’s stated figures; the sources cited here do not provide independent road-test verification. The combined 1,800 hp figure likewise describes the full hybrid system, not the V16 by itself.

Rimac Technology says it designed, engineered and integrated the Tourbillon’s battery system, e-axles and electronic control units, including its 800-volt system. Its 2025 announcement describes a production limit of 250 cars and says deliveries were planned to begin in 2026.
