What Musk said about the April start
At Tesla’s November 6, 2025 shareholder meeting, Elon Musk said the company would start Cybercab production in April 2026 at its Austin factory. The remark was a future target, not confirmation that production had started. TechCrunch reported Musk’s statement, describing Cybercab as an autonomous electric vehicle without pedals or a steering wheel.

What Tesla later confirmed
- January 28, 2026: Tesla’s Q4 2025 update said preparations for Cybercab production ramps continued, with production then expected to commence in the first half of 2026. Tesla’s Q4 update did not say production had begun.

The best-supported timing is therefore that production began sometime during Q2 2026. Tesla’s statement is a company-reported manufacturing milestone; the cited update does not provide an independently audited output figure, production rate, or exact start date.

Tesla’s Q2 update also said public-road engineering test drives of production vehicles began during Q2 and employee rides on the factory campus began in July. Those activities indicate testing and limited rides, not broad public availability.

In its Q2 coverage, the Associated Press reported that Tesla did not provide specific numbers for Cybercabs expected on roads or an exact rollout timeline. AP also reported Musk said additional chassis testing was needed and expressed caution about expanding the service. AP’s report on Tesla’s Q2 results therefore offers no basis for assigning a public launch date or fleet size.
