Bugatti attempted a tiny, brutally large series of bespoke cars, using a 12.7-litre (12.8-litre in a later Bugatti account) straight-eight and a body that could stretch almost 6.5 metres. Rolls-Royce introduced the New Phantom in 1925 as the replacement for the Silver Ghost and built a continuing flagship nameplate around a supplied rolling chassis and customer-selected coachwork. The Royale was the more extreme physical and mechanical statement; Phantom was the more durable institutional concept. A complete number-for-number comparison is not possible because the Rolls-Royce historical material consulted does not publish a matching set of first-generation Phantom engine, dimension and performance figures.
Which Royale and which Phantom are being compared?
“Rolls-Royce Phantom” can mean eight generations of cars produced across a century. Comparing a 1920s Bugatti Royale with a modern Phantom would produce a misleading result, so the chronological counterpart is the first car to carry the name: the New Phantom, announced in 1925. Rolls-Royce described it as a new 40/50 H.P. chassis and the replacement for the Silver Ghost. The Bugatti Type 41 Royale prototype followed in 1926.

This is therefore a comparison of the Type 41 project and the 1925 New Phantom, not of the Royale with the current eighth-generation Phantom. Rolls-Royce’s 2025 centenary history says Phantom has remained the marque’s pinnacle nameplate through eight generations; that establishes continuity of purpose, not identical engineering or dimensions across the decades.
At a glance: what the documented sources establish
| Measure | Bugatti Type 41 Royale | Rolls-Royce New Phantom (1925) |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Bugatti’s planned ultimate luxury and power car | Replacement for the Silver Ghost and the new flagship 40/50 H.P. chassis |
| Engine | Production inline eight; 12.7 litres and approximately 300 PS below 2,000 rpm in Bugatti’s 2013 account | Exact first-generation engine displacement and output are not stated in the cited Rolls-Royce accounts |
| Length | Nearly 6.5 metres in Bugatti’s 2013 specification | Not stated in the cited Rolls-Royce accounts; final body dimensions varied with coachbuilder |
| Wheelbase | 4.3 metres in Bugatti’s 2013 specification | Not stated in the cited Rolls-Royce accounts |
| Weight | About three tonnes in 2013; a 2020 Bugatti account says some bodies could reach 3.5 tonnes | Not stated in the cited Rolls-Royce accounts |
| Fuel tank | 190 litres in Bugatti’s 2013 specification | Not stated in the cited Rolls-Royce accounts |
| Production ambition | Around 25 planned for royal families and heads of state; six built | Part of an ongoing Phantom line rather than a six-car project |
| Coachwork | Built by several independent firms and, in some cases, by Bugatti | Rolls-Royce supplied rolling chassis; independent coachbuilders and customers determined the body |
The table shows why a simple “which had the bigger engine?” article can overstate what is known. The Royale’s figures are unusually well documented by Bugatti. The official Rolls-Royce histories used here concentrate on the Phantom’s launch, status and coachbuilding system rather than supplying a directly parallel technical sheet.

Engine scale and character
The Royale’s extraordinary straight-eight
Bugatti’s 2013 account gives the production Type 41 an inline-eight engine of 12.7 litres, with three valves per cylinder and approximately 300 PS produced below 2,000 rpm. Its prototype engine was described as nearly 15 litres and used overhead camshafts. Even after the production engine was reduced in capacity, it remained far beyond the displacement typical of contemporary passenger cars.
A later Bugatti account from 2020 describes the production unit as 12.8 litres and about 300 hp. The small difference between 12.7 and 12.8 litres reflects the way Bugatti has rounded or presented the specification in different publications; it is not evidence of two separate production engines. The safe conclusion is that the Royale used a roughly 12.7–12.8-litre straight-eight delivering about 300 horsepower at very low engine speed.
The same 2020 account says speed could reach around 200 km/h depending on the body and the car’s weight. A 2015 Volkswagen Group history publication instead gives a 13-litre engine and a 165 km/h top speed. Those claims should not be averaged into a single “official” maximum. Body style, gearing, weight and the source’s rounding all matter, and the documents are manufacturer or corporate histories rather than independent comparative tests.

Rolls-Royce’s centenary account identifies the New Phantom as a new 40/50 H.P. chassis introduced in 1925, replacing the Silver Ghost. It does not, in the material consulted, provide a matching first-generation Phantom displacement, power, dimensions, weight or top-speed set that can be placed beside the Royale’s numbers without speculation.
That evidence gap prevents a defensible numerical claim that the Royale was faster or more powerful than every New Phantom. It does support a qualitative distinction: Bugatti advertised the Type 41 through its immense engine and physical scale, while Rolls-Royce presented Phantom as the refined successor to an established chassis and as the marque’s flagship. The Royale’s documented engine is the more startling mechanical statement, but the supplied sources do not establish a laboratory-style head-to-head result.
Why low-revving power mattered
Approximately 300 PS below 2,000 rpm indicates an engine designed to move a very heavy luxury body with effortless torque rather than to chase high engine speeds. That character suits the Royale’s intended role as a grand, chauffeur-oriented limousine. It also explains why the car could carry enormous dimensions and, according to Bugatti, a 190-litre fuel tank. The figures describe reserve and effortlessness more than sporting agility.
Size, weight and the effect of coachbuilt bodies
Royale dimensions
Bugatti’s 2013 specification lists the Royale at nearly 6.5 metres long, with a 4.3-metre wheelbase and a mass of about three tonnes. Bugatti’s 2020 history adds an important qualification: depending on the body, weight could reach 3.5 tonnes. These are not contradictory descriptions of a single standardized sedan; they show how much the finished car depended on its coachwork.

A 6.5-metre length and 4.3-metre wheelbase put the Royale in a different physical category from ordinary luxury cars of its period. The dimensions created space for formal chauffeur compartments, long rear cabins and elaborate body designs, but they also imposed weight, turning-radius and storage demands. The car’s scale was part of its identity, not an incidental result of styling.
Why Phantom dimensions are not safely fillable from these sources
The New Phantom was delivered as a rolling chassis. Rolls-Royce’s own history says the company supplied the mechanical platform while independent builders and customers determined the form and coachwork. As a result, one Phantom body could not automatically stand for every other Phantom body in the way a modern factory-built model’s published length often can.
Because the cited Rolls-Royce material does not state a first-generation Phantom wheelbase, length or weight, inserting numbers from an unspecified body would create false precision. The fair comparison is therefore structural: both cars could be coachbuilt, but the Royale was an exceptionally large, rare project whose surviving examples can differ substantially by body, while Phantom was a repeatable flagship chassis offered through a broader coachbuilding system.
Coachbuilding: bespoke in both cases, but not the same business model
Royale bodies and changing identities
Bugatti identifies Kellner & Cie, Weymann, Binder, Bugatti, Weinberger and Park Ward among the firms that built bodies for Type 41 chassis. This variety is central to understanding why photographs of “the Royale” can look unrelated. The chassis and drivetrain supplied the common identity; the body could be a roadster, formal town car or another individualized design.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Bugatti’s example of chassis 41111 demonstrates the point. It was first delivered to Paris industrialist Armand Esders in 1932 as a Jean Bugatti-designed roadster. In 1938 it was refitted as a Binder Coupé de Ville. The same mechanical object therefore acquired a different visual and practical role over its life. Comparing one Royale photograph with one Phantom photograph without identifying the body can be as misleading as comparing different model generations.
Phantom’s rolling-chassis tradition
Rolls-Royce’s heritage account says its cars remained rolling chassis until 1949, with Phantom among the models available in that format. Customers selected independent coachbuilders, who supplied the visible body. This approach made the Phantom a platform for personal specification and formal social use rather than a single fixed silhouette.
The distinction is scale and continuity. Bugatti planned the Royale as a tiny run of spectacular cars, while Rolls-Royce used a rolling-chassis business model that could support repeated production and a long-lived flagship identity. Both offered bespoke bodies, but one was a six-car aspiration that struggled to find buyers; the other was an enduring model architecture.

Rarity, price and intended clientele
The Royale’s failed mass ambition
Bugatti says it intended to build around 25 Royales for royal families and heads of state but completed only six. Difficult economic conditions undermined the original plan. The first prototype was built in 1926, yet the first customer sale did not occur until 1932, when Armand Esders bought a Royale.
Bugatti’s 2020 account says the car cost at least 100,000 Reichsmarks—around three times the price of similar limousines from other manufacturers. That is Bugatti’s stated comparison, not a comprehensive market survey, but it illustrates the commercial obstacle. A vehicle priced at that level and requiring enormous bespoke coachwork had a very narrow customer base even among wealthy buyers.
Six completed cars make the Royale exceptionally rare by design and by outcome. The number also means that each surviving chassis carries disproportionate historical weight: body changes, ownership and restoration decisions can alter how the public understands the entire model.
Phantom’s broader flagship audience
The New Phantom was not announced as a limited six-car experiment. Rolls-Royce positioned it as the replacement for the Silver Ghost and continued the name through later generations. The cited accounts do not provide a directly comparable first-generation production total or launch price, so no precise rarity ratio should be claimed.
Its intended clientele was nevertheless similar at the social level: people who could commission a luxury car and, where appropriate, specify custom coachwork and chauffeur-oriented accommodation. The difference was institutional. Phantom became a continuing product line, whereas the Royale became a closed historical set of six cars.

Royale as Bugatti’s ultimate statement
Bugatti describes the Type 41 as an aspiration to create the most powerful and luxurious series-production car. Its huge engine, immense dimensions and high price were the argument. The project attempted to move Bugatti beyond its better-known sporting identity into the realm of royal and state-level luxury.
The result was technically audacious but commercially constrained. The six-car total turned the Royale into a landmark rather than a sustainable product family. Its significance lies in the extremity of the attempt: Bugatti demonstrated what an automobile could be when normal limits of engine size, body length and production economics were set aside.

Phantom as a continuing definition of Rolls-Royce
Rolls-Royce’s 2025 centenary history describes Phantom as the marque’s pinnacle through eight generations. Chief Executive Chris Brownridge characterized its enduring role as being the most magnificent, desirable and effortless Rolls-Royce. That statement concerns the nameplate’s legacy, not a direct judgment against the Royale, but it explains why Phantom matters historically.
Unlike the Royale, Phantom’s achievement is cumulative. Each generation could reinterpret the flagship while retaining the same top-of-range role. Rolls-Royce says the eighth generation is currently handcrafted at Goodwood, a fact that belongs to the nameplate’s modern lineage rather than to the 1925 car’s specification.

Which car was bigger, more powerful or rarer?
Bigger
On the published figures available here, the Royale is clearly documented as enormous: nearly 6.5 metres long, with a 4.3-metre wheelbase and roughly three tonnes before some body variations reached 3.5 tonnes. The Rolls-Royce accounts supplied for this comparison do not state equivalent New Phantom measurements. It is accurate to call the Royale exceptionally large, but not to assign a precise size advantage using an unstated Phantom figure.
More powerful
The Royale’s approximately 300 PS from about 12.7–12.8 litres is documented. A corresponding first-generation Phantom output is not provided in the cited Rolls-Royce histories. Therefore the evidence supports “the Royale had an extraordinary, very large engine,” not a fully sourced claim that it was more powerful than the New Phantom.
Rarer
The Royale is rarer in the most straightforward documented sense: Bugatti says only six were built. Phantom was a continuing nameplate with eight generations, so its historical identity is based on continuity rather than a six-car production ceiling. A precise production comparison for the first Phantom is outside the figures supplied here.
More influential as a model concept
That depends on the measure. The Royale has greater shock value and scarcity. Phantom has the stronger institutional legacy because Rolls-Royce kept the name at the summit of its range for a century. One is a finite technological and social statement; the other is a repeatable flagship formula.

Readers will encounter 12.7-litre, 12.8-litre and 13-litre descriptions; approximately 300 PS or about 300 hp; and top speeds around 200 km/h or 165 km/h. These should be attributed rather than merged.

What the comparison means for a modern reader
If “luxury” means maximum physical presence and mechanical excess, the Royale is the stronger answer. Its dimensions, low-revving straight-eight and tiny production run make it one of the most uncompromising luxury-car projects of the interwar period.
If “luxury” means a marque’s ability to sustain a flagship idea across generations, Phantom is the stronger answer. The 1925 New Phantom replaced the Silver Ghost, used the established rolling-chassis and coachbuilding relationship, and began a lineage that Rolls-Royce still describes as its pinnacle.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The two cars also reveal different approaches to risk. Bugatti concentrated enormous resources in a handful of highly individual machines. Rolls-Royce made the flagship a continuing institution, allowing bodies and later generations to change while preserving the name’s position. Neither approach makes the other irrelevant: the Royale explains the upper limit of one-off ambition, while Phantom explains how a luxury identity can survive technological and cultural change.
Verdict
The Bugatti Type 41 Royale was the more extreme car on the evidence that can be measured: about a 12.7–12.8-litre straight-eight, roughly 300 horsepower at very low revs, nearly 6.5 metres long, and so rare that only six were built from an intended 25. The first Rolls-Royce Phantom was less a finite stunt than the launch of a flagship system: a 1925 40/50 H.P. replacement for the Silver Ghost, supplied as a rolling chassis for individually commissioned bodies and carried forward through eight generations.
So the fairest answer is not that one universally defeated the other. The Royale was Bugatti’s spectacular, scarcely repeatable declaration of maximum scale. Phantom was Rolls-Royce’s durable definition of the pinnacle luxury car. Where the sources provide numbers, the Royale dominates the conversation; where they show historical endurance and production philosophy, Phantom has the longer reach.
