There is no evidence-based universal winner between the BSA Gold Star 650 and Kawasaki Vulcan S. Choose the Gold Star if you want a classic-inspired motorcycle with a liquid-cooled 652 cc single-cylinder engine and five-speed gearbox. Choose the Vulcan S if you prefer a sport-cruiser concept, a liquid-cooled 649 cc parallel twin, six speeds, a very low U.S.-specification seat, and adjustable rider contact points through Kawasaki’s ERGO-FIT system. Those are specification-based recommendations, not a road-test verdict; your local model year, price, dealer support, physical fit and test ride should decide the purchase.

What these motorcycles are designed to be

The Gold Star 650 and Vulcan S have similar engine displacement, but they target different kinds of riding. BSA presents the Gold Star as a modern motorcycle with classic styling. Kawasaki places the Vulcan S in its sport-cruiser range. That distinction matters more than the small 3 cc difference in capacity: engine layout, gearbox, seating position and adjustment options will shape how each bike feels and how easily it suits your body.

The comparison below uses the manufacturers’ published figures. BSA’s specifications come from its official Gold Star page, whose publication date is not stated. Kawasaki figures and prices are specifically for the U.S. 2026 Vulcan S. A local brochure can differ by country or model year, so treat the market and year shown beside each number as part of the specification.

Engine character and gearing: single versus parallel twin

Gold Star: 652 cc single and five gears

The Gold Star uses a liquid-cooled 652 cc single-cylinder engine with double overhead camshafts and four valves. BSA publishes 45 hp at 6,500 rpm and 55 Nm at 4,000 rpm, together with a five-speed transmission. A single-cylinder design and the stated torque peak at a relatively low engine speed are central to the bike’s identity, but the specification sheet cannot tell you how much vibration you will feel, how smooth the throttle is, or whether the gearing suits your roads. Those are test-ride questions.

The five-speed gearbox gives one fewer ratio than the Kawasaki. That is not automatically a disadvantage: a rider who values a straightforward classic-style layout may prefer it. Conversely, the number of gears alone does not establish acceleration, cruising comfort or fuel use. BSA’s page does not provide an independently measured comparison with the Vulcan S.

Vulcan S: 649 cc parallel twin and six gears

Kawasaki lists a liquid-cooled 649 cc parallel-twin engine producing 60 hp at 7,500 rpm and 46.5 lb-ft at 6,600 rpm, coupled to a six-speed transmission and sealed-chain final drive. The published peak figures are measured at different engine speeds and in different torque units from BSA’s figures, so do not treat the numbers as a complete performance ranking. The Vulcan’s extra gear and twin-cylinder layout describe its mechanical configuration, not a guarantee that every rider will find it quicker, smoother or easier to manage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you ride, pay attention to the speed range in which each motorcycle pulls cleanly, the effort required at the clutch, and whether the gear you need is easy to select. Listen for noises and note vibration at the speeds you actually use. None of those observations can be supplied by the manufacturers’ headline displacement and output numbers.

Seat height, reach and rider fit

Published seat heights are market-specific

BSA lists the Gold Star seat at 780 mm. Kawasaki’s U.S. 2026 page lists the Vulcan S at 27.8 inches, approximately 706 mm. These figures suggest a substantial nominal difference, but the numbers are not a promise that either motorcycle will fit every rider. Seat width, suspension sag, boot choice, inseam and handlebar reach all affect whether you can place both feet securely.

Kawasaki’s India 2027 result lists a 705 mm seat height. That is close to the U.S. figure but belongs to a different market and model year. Do not combine the two into a single global specification. Confirm the seat height, trim and equipment on the brochure or dealer listing for the motorcycle you can actually buy. The BSA page similarly does not establish that 780 mm applies unchanged to every country or edition.

ERGO-FIT gives the Vulcan more adjustment points

Kawasaki says the Vulcan S can be configured through ERGO-FIT, with adjustments for the seat, footpegs and handlebar. Its overview describes 18 possible configurations. This gives a dealer more ways to alter the relationship between your hips, knees, hands and feet than a fixed layout, but adjustability does not guarantee comfort. A rider with a long torso, short arms or a sensitive knee may still find one setting unsuitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the dealer to demonstrate the available ERGO-FIT position rather than assuming the motorcycle on the floor is in the setting you need. Sit in each offered position, turn the bars fully left and right, operate the controls while stationary and check that your knees are not forced into an awkward angle. Repeat the same checks on the Gold Star, including a full-lock turn and both feet on the ground. A tape-measure comparison is useful, but your stance and control reach are more decisive.

Weight, fuel and equipment: read the labels carefully

Kerb weight and curb weight are not interchangeable labels

BSA quotes 213 kg as kerb weight. Kawasaki quotes curb weight of 498.3 lb for the ABS model and 491.7 lb for the non-ABS model in the U.S. 2026 specification. Kawasaki also lists estimated dry weights of 467.5 lb with ABS and 460.8 lb without ABS, and explains that its curb figure includes operating fluids and a mostly full fuel tank.

Because the manufacturers use different labels and Kawasaki separates wet and dry estimates, these figures should not be presented as a precise, like-for-like ranking. If you are comparing showroom bikes, ask whether each number includes fuel, coolant, oil, battery and standard equipment. More importantly, move each motorcycle yourself: push it off the stand, make a slow U-turn and catch it from a gentle lean. A few pounds on a specification sheet do not predict how the mass will feel at parking-lot speed.

Fuel capacity is known; fuel economy is not settled here

The Gold Star has a listed 12-litre tank. Kawasaki lists 3.7 U.S. gallons for the 2026 Vulcan S. Capacity affects how often you stop, but it does not establish range without a reliable, comparable consumption figure. The BSA page displays two fuel-use fields that do not exactly match: 4.4 L/100 km in one place and 4.001 L/100 km (70.6 mpg WMTC) in another. Until BSA clarifies the discrepancy, do not use either number as a definitive comparison with Kawasaki.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Actual range will vary with speed, traffic, load, temperature, tyre pressures and riding style. Plan your first trips around fuel stations rather than assuming a calculated range from the tank capacities alone.

Brakes, ABS and equipment require a local build-sheet check

The cited material confirms that Kawasaki offers ABS and non-ABS U.S. 2026 variants, with separate curb weights and prices. The BSA specification cited here does not state its brake hardware or ABS availability. It would therefore be inaccurate to declare one motorcycle’s braking system superior from this evidence.

Before paying a deposit, request the exact local equipment list. Verify whether ABS is fitted to the specific stock number, which lighting and display features are included, and whether optional accessories alter weight or seating. Equipment can differ by country, trim and model year even when the engine displacement remains the same.

Price and ownership decisions by market

What Kawasaki publishes for the United States

Kawasaki’s U.S. 2026 page lists a $7,649 base MSRP for the non-ABS Vulcan S and $8,149 for the ABS version, plus a $685 destination charge. Kawasaki states that prices and specifications may change. These are U.S. figures; taxes, registration, dealer documentation, freight beyond the stated destination charge and other on-road costs may still apply according to the purchase location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a BSA price cannot be paired with that number here

The BSA page used for the Gold Star specifications does not provide a same-market, dated price that can be verified against those Kawasaki U.S. figures. A dealer advertisement from another country, an older model year or an undated listing would create a misleading comparison. Obtain written, current quotes for both motorcycles in the same country and, ideally, from the same type of dealer network. Ask each seller to separate base price, destination or freight, taxes, registration, assembly and optional accessories.

Dealer support is part of the purchase decision

Before choosing, identify an authorized service location for each brand within a distance you can realistically travel. Ask about routine service intervals, parts ordering times, warranty terms and roadside assistance in your market. The specifications supplied for this comparison do not establish that either motorcycle is more reliable, cheaper to maintain or worth more at resale, so those questions must be answered locally rather than inferred from engine design.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the BSA Gold Star 650 when these priorities lead

  • You specifically want a classic-inspired design rather than a sport-cruiser presentation.
  • A liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine and five-speed gearbox match the character you are seeking.
  • The 780 mm seat works for your inseam and you can comfortably reach the controls in a stationary fit check.
  • Your local BSA dealer can provide a current price, parts support and a test ride that meet your needs.
  • You are comfortable making your decision without treating the unresolved fuel-use figures on BSA’s page as a precise range promise.

Choose the Kawasaki Vulcan S when these priorities lead

  • You prefer Kawasaki’s sport-cruiser concept and the stated 649 cc parallel-twin architecture.
  • The six-speed transmission and published 60 hp output fit your intended riding, subject to a test ride.
  • A low 27.8-inch U.S. 2026 seat is important, while recognizing that seat height varies by market and year.
  • You want the dealer to tailor seat, footpeg and handlebar positions using ERGO-FIT’s 18 configurations.
  • You need an ABS or non-ABS choice and can verify the exact equipment, weight and price of the local variant.

Use a tie-breaker when both appear suitable

If both bikes fit physically and your local prices are close, schedule back-to-back rides on the same day. Use the same route and record the things specifications cannot settle: low-speed balance, clutch effort, vibration, wind protection, reach to the bars, knee angle, ease of turning around and confidence when stopping on uneven ground. Then compare dealer answers about service and parts, not just the showroom impression.

A practical inspection and test-ride checklist

  1. Confirm identity. Photograph the VIN or stock number and match it to the advertised model year, country specification and ABS status.
  2. Record the written price. Have the dealer itemize base price, destination or freight, taxes, registration, documentation and accessories for each bike.
  3. Set the motorcycle for you. On the Vulcan S, ask the dealer to show the ERGO-FIT seat, footpeg and handlebar positions. On the Gold Star, set the controls as far as the local equipment allows.
  4. Check reach before starting. With the motorcycle upright, operate the front brake, clutch, switches and rear brake while keeping your shoulders relaxed. Turn the handlebar fully in both directions.
  5. Practice stationary handling. Lift from the side stand, reverse it, apply the brakes progressively and perform a slow U-turn. Notice where the weight sits and whether you can recover from a small lean.
  6. Ride the same route. Include stop-start traffic, a smooth open section, a rough surface and a safe low-speed turn. Keep the evaluation conditions as similar as possible.
  7. Check the gear you would use most. Note engine response, shift effort and vibration at urban speeds and at the fastest legal cruising speed on your route. Do not convert one short ride into a claim about long-term reliability.
  8. Inspect after the ride. Look for fluid leaks, warning lights, unusual noises, hot spots, difficult neutral selection or a control that leaves your hand or foot strained.
  9. Get support details in writing. Ask who will perform warranty work, how quickly routine parts arrive and what the scheduled maintenance costs are in your region.

Common comparison mistakes to avoid

  • Declaring a winner from displacement. The engines are nearly the same size, but one is a single and the other a parallel twin with different published output and gearing.
  • Comparing unlike weights. BSA’s 213 kg kerb figure and Kawasaki’s curb and estimated dry figures do not have identical definitions.
  • Mixing countries and model years. The U.S. 2026 Kawasaki seat and price cannot be merged with the India 2027 seat listing or with a local BSA edition without confirmation.
  • Treating marketing descriptions as rider testimony. “Classic-inspired,” “sport-cruiser” and ERGO-FIT describe product positioning and features; they do not prove comfort for your body.
  • Assuming adjustability guarantees fit. Eighteen Vulcan configurations expand the setup choices, but only sitting and riding the motorcycle can reveal whether one works for you.
  • Using a disputed consumption number as a range guarantee. The two BSA fuel-use fields are not identical, and neither is an independent comparative test.
  • Using an old or foreign price. Compare current, same-country, same-year dealer quotes and identify destination charges, taxes and on-road fees.

How much confidence should you place in the published figures?

Manufacturer specifications are useful for identifying engine architecture, gearbox count, seat-height claims, tank capacity and listed prices. They are not a controlled comparison of acceleration, braking distance, comfort, reliability, service cost, resale value or real-world fuel economy. No independently attributable study comparing these two motorcycles is established by the cited material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, use the specification table to narrow the choice, then verify the factors that are personal or market-dependent. A rider who cannot flat-foot the Gold Star may find its 780 mm seat decisive; another rider may prefer its layout and accept a one-foot stop. A U.S. buyer may value the Vulcan’s low seat and ERGO-FIT, while a buyer elsewhere may receive a different seat, trim or price. The right conclusion changes with those facts.

Bottom-line decision framework

Start with the riding concept, not the badge: classic-inspired single-cylinder simplicity points toward the BSA Gold Star 650; sport-cruiser ergonomics, a parallel twin, six gears and extensive contact-point adjustment point toward the Kawasaki Vulcan S. Next, verify the local seat height, ABS equipment, weight definition and complete price. Finally, sit on both motorcycles and ride them if possible. If one fits your body and dealer network materially better, that practical advantage outweighs a small displacement difference or a headline output number.
