Schedule the BSA Gold Star 650’s first service at 500 miles (1,000 km), whichever comes first, using an authorised BSA service centre. The service includes the first oil and filter change, chain inspection and adjustment as needed, and the other checks listed in your market’s owner manual. BSA specifies fully synthetic SAE 10W-50 motorcycle oil meeting JASO-MA2 and API-SL or higher. The refill quantity is 2.3 litres after draining, or 2.35 litres when the oil filter is replaced; the dipstick determines the final level.
When is the first Gold Star 650 service due?
The first scheduled service is due at 500 miles (1,000 km), whichever comes first. That interval is stated in BSA’s 2023 owner-manual schedule. Book the appointment before reaching the limit, particularly if the motorcycle will be used for commuting or touring. A service booked after the milestone can leave you outside the interval specified by the manual and may make it harder for a dealer to document compliance.

Schedules can differ by market and manual revision. Use the owner manual supplied with your motorcycle, confirm the model year and market with the dealer, and follow any more-current written instruction issued by BSA. The workshop information identifies the first oil change as part of the 500-mile service; it is not an optional early inspection.
What running-in means on the Gold Star 650
Running-in is the initial operating period in which the engine, transmission, clutch, brakes, tyres and chain settle into service. The important control is the limit in the owner manual supplied with your motorcycle. BSA’s available manual material identifies the first-service milestone but does not reproduce the complete running-in speed, rpm and throttle table used for every market and revision. For that reason, this guide does not invent a numeric rpm or speed ceiling.

Find the authoritative limits
- Open the owner manual that came with the motorcycle and locate the section titled Running-in, Break-in or similar.
- Write down each limit separately: maximum engine speed, maximum road speed, throttle-opening guidance, and the distance or time at which restrictions change.
- Keep those limits with the motorcycle or save a photograph of the page. Do not substitute a figure from another BSA model, another 650 cc motorcycle or an online forum.
- If the manual supplied with the bike is missing or differs from the dealer’s current version, ask an authorised BSA service centre for the current market-specific instructions before riding beyond the first stage.
How to ride within the table
Stay below every published limit, not merely the lowest rpm number. Apply throttle progressively, avoid holding the engine at one speed for long periods, and vary road speed and gear while remaining within the manual’s permitted range. Do not use full throttle or force the engine to pull a high gear at very low rpm. Those are practical ways to reduce unnecessary load while the manual’s restrictions apply; they are not a replacement for BSA’s numerical table.
Check the motorcycle before each ride during this period. Look for oil or coolant on the ground, an oil-level warning, unusual mechanical noise, a loose control, a tyre-pressure problem or a chain that is visibly dry or slack. Stop riding and contact the dealer if a warning light remains on, the engine overheats, oil pressure is indicated, braking changes suddenly or a leak appears.
Reaching the first-service distance
Plan the route so the motorcycle reaches 500 miles (1,000 km) close to the appointment rather than substantially beyond it. Record the odometer reading and date. If the motorcycle reaches the distance early during a trip, reduce use to what is necessary to reach an authorised service facility and obtain the dealer’s advice; do not assume that continuing for an arbitrary extra distance is acceptable.

Do not choose oil solely by viscosity. The JASO-MA2 classification is relevant to a motorcycle engine with a wet clutch, and the API rating must meet or exceed SL. Ask the service centre to record the exact product and specification on the invoice.

The quantities come from BSA’s workshop-manual information and describe service fill, not a promise that every engine will accept exactly that volume without a level check. Add oil in small increments if required. Overfilling can be as undesirable as underfilling, so never skip the dipstick check.
First-service checklist: the exact sequence
BSA states that designated maintenance items should be attended by an authorised service centre. The following sequence is a practical checklist to take to that appointment. It also helps an owner verify that the work order is complete without replacing the dealer’s model-specific procedures.

Give the dealer the model year, market, vehicle identification number and current mileage. Ask for the first-service appointment before 500 miles (1,000 km).
- Confirm the schedule. Have the technician use the current owner-manual maintenance table for your exact edition. Ask which items are inspection-only and which require adjustment or replacement at this milestone.
- Warm the engine as specified. The workshop procedure calls for warming the engine before draining. The technician should follow BSA’s two-point drain procedure, using the motorcycle’s service instructions rather than improvising a single drain point.
- Drain the old oil. Allow the oil to drain fully into a suitable container. Inspect the removed oil for abnormal metal or contamination and report anything unusual before refill.
- Replace the filter and O-ring. The first service includes replacement of the oil-filter element and its O-ring. Confirm that the old seal has been removed and that the new O-ring is correctly seated and lubricated as directed by the manual.
- Inspect the magnetic drain-bolt sealing washer. Replace the washer if it is damaged, deformed or otherwise unsuitable for reuse. The magnet and bolt should be cleaned and checked for unusual debris.
- Refill with compliant oil. Use SAE 10W-50 fully synthetic motorcycle oil meeting JASO-MA2 and API-SL or higher. Start with the applicable service quantity, then use the dipstick to establish the final level.
- Circulate and recheck. Run the engine and let the oil circulate exactly as the manual directs. Stop, allow the specified settling period, check the dipstick on the specified surface and correct the level if necessary.
- Check for leaks. Inspect the filter, O-ring, both drain points and the drain-bolt washer with the engine running and again after it is stopped. A wet joint or fresh drip requires correction before the motorcycle leaves the workshop.
- Inspect and service the drive chain. Measure slack at the prescribed location, inspect for wear or damaged links, clean and lubricate it, and adjust it if required. The chain should be checked at every 500-mile/1,000-km maintenance interval, not only at the first service.
- Complete the remaining scheduled checks. The current owner-manual table should be used for controls, fasteners, brakes, tyres, coolant, battery, lights and diagnostic or service indicators. Do not rely on a generic 650 cc checklist or apply unverified torque figures.
- Close out the documentation. Obtain the mileage, date, oil specification, filter information and dealer stamp or invoice. Keep the paperwork with the motorcycle’s warranty and service records.
Drive-chain inspection and adjustment
A chain that is too loose can slap, derail or accelerate sprocket wear; one that is too tight can overload the transmission and suspension movement. Because the correct slack measurement point and adjustment method are model-specific, use the Gold Star manual’s procedure. The technician should inspect the complete chain for stiff or seized links, rust, damaged rollers and uneven wear, then lubricate it with a product suitable for motorcycle drive chains.

After adjustment, the rear wheel must remain aligned and the chain must still have the required movement through the suspension’s range. Ask the dealer to record that the chain was inspected and whether an adjustment was made. Recheck visually after the first few rides because a newly adjusted chain can reveal wear that was not obvious while stationary.
Checks beyond oil and chain
The oil change is the most visible part of the first service, but it is not the whole service. The authorised technician should work through the maintenance table for your exact motorcycle and verify:
- Throttle, clutch, brake and other control operation.
- Fasteners and visible signs of looseness or damage.
- Front and rear brake operation and condition.
- Tyre condition and pressures against the motorcycle’s specified values.
- Coolant level and evidence of leakage.
- Battery condition and terminals.
- Headlamp, tail lamp, indicators, brake lamp and other lights.
- Diagnostic messages and service indicators, with any required reset completed.
The list above identifies the categories named for the first-service checklist; the owner manual supplies the inspection method, limits and any replacement criteria. It does not establish a universal torque value or a substitute interval for every market.

Authorised dealer or owner-performed work?
BSA’s owner-manual wording recommends that designated maintenance items be attended by an authorised service centre. An owner may still want to understand what the appointment covers, but the choice has consequences beyond convenience.

- The odometer reading is within the 500-mile/1,000-km first-service trigger or the dealer has documented why it could not be.
- The invoice names SAE 10W-50 fully synthetic oil meeting JASO-MA2 and API-SL or higher.
- The oil filter element and O-ring are listed as replaced, and the drain-bolt washer is listed as inspected or replaced.
- The final oil level was checked with the dipstick after circulation.
- No fresh oil leak is visible around either drain point or the filter.
- The chain was inspected, lubricated and adjusted if necessary.
- The remaining maintenance-table checks and any service-indicator reset are recorded.
- The dealer gives you a dated invoice or stamped record.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using the wrong oil rating
A bottle marked only 10W-50 is not enough evidence of compliance. Verify both JASO-MA2 and API-SL or higher. If the wrong oil was installed, tell the dealer before riding further and have the oil replaced with a compliant product.
Filling to a number without checking the dipstick
2.3 litres and 2.35 litres are service quantities, not permission to ignore the level indicator. If the dipstick shows an incorrect level after circulation and settling, have it corrected and inspect for leaks.
Skipping the filter seal or drain washer
Reusing a damaged O-ring or sealing washer can produce a leak. Confirm both parts were inspected and replaced where necessary before accepting the motorcycle.

Inventing a running-in rpm limit
Do not apply a number copied from another model. Use the running-in table in your own manual or obtain the current instruction from an authorised BSA centre. Until the applicable limit is confirmed, keep riding within the restrictions already stated in your manual and avoid aggressive loading.
Leaving without records
An undated verbal assurance does not show what oil, filter or adjustments were used. Keep the invoice with the owner manual and note the next scheduled mileage from the current maintenance table.
After the first service
For the first few rides, inspect the ground beneath the motorcycle and look around the filter and drain points after parking. Confirm that the oil-level indication remains correct and that the chain has not developed abnormal slack, tight spots or noise. Continue to follow the remaining running-in limits until the manual says that period is complete; the first service does not automatically cancel restrictions that are expressed separately in the running-in section.
