Buyers who need a car in 2026 or 2027 should generally choose a well-supported, correctly certified BS6 or BS6 Phase 2 model rather than wait for a standard that is not final. India’s latest nationwide emission standard remains BS-VI. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) published a BS-VII notification dated 12 October 2026, but it is a draft inviting objections for 30 days—not a nationwide showroom mandate. The draft proposes the first BS-VII requirements for category N1 vehicles manufactured from 1 April 2030, followed by additional requirements through 2035.
Waiting can be sensible if your purchase is flexible and you specifically want a vehicle certified under the final BS-VII rules. However, no authoritative figure yet establishes a universal BS-VII price premium, maintenance increase, fuel-economy change or resale effect. The right decision depends on your purchase date, powertrain, warranty, local restrictions and access to qualified service.

Is BS7 confirmed in India?
No. As of 16 October 2026, BS-VII is proposed draft regulation, not a final nationwide requirement. The MoRTH notification of 12 October 2026 invites objections and states that the rules will be considered after 30 days. Its dates can therefore change before a final notification is issued.
The draft’s first stated applicability is for category N1 vehicles manufactured on or after 1 April 2030, for all models in that category. That wording should not be treated as a guaranteed date on which every passenger car in every showroom will suddenly become BS-VII. Final rules, vehicle categories, model approvals and implementation notices will determine what manufacturers must sell and when.

NITI Aayog’s 2022 transport review states: “The latest BS standard prevalent nationwide is BS VI which has been made effective w.e.f. April 2020.” That remains the practical baseline unless and until a final notification changes it.
What BS6 changed
BS-VI was a substantial change, not merely a badge update. India skipped BS-V and moved from BS-IV to BS-VI nationwide on 1 April 2020. BS-VI fuel has a maximum sulphur content of 10 parts per million (ppm), compared with 50 ppm under BS-IV, according to the Press Information Bureau’s 2022 explanation.
The lower-sulphur fuel quality enabled more advanced exhaust after-treatment. Government material specifically identifies diesel particulate filters (DPF) for particulate matter and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for nitrogen oxides. These systems reduce emissions, but they also add sensors, control hardware, operating conditions and service procedures that differ from those of a simple naturally aspirated petrol engine.

That comparison helps explain the standard’s technical ambition, but it does not make every BS-VI car mechanically identical. Certification belongs to the individual engine, fuel system, calibration and vehicle configuration.

How the proposed BS7 framework would differ
The draft focuses on proving that emissions remain controlled in more situations and for longer. It goes beyond a laboratory certification snapshot by combining testing, in-service checks, diagnostics, monitoring and durability requirements.

The draft also specifies a main lifetime requirement extending up to 160,000 kilometres or eight years, whichever comes first, and an additional period extending up to 200,000 kilometres or ten years. These are draft compliance periods, not a promise that every owner receives a free ten-year warranty. Read the final regulation and the manufacturer’s warranty separately.
Will a BS6 car become illegal when BS7 arrives?
Not automatically. A later emission standard does not by itself erase the legality of vehicles that were properly type-approved and registered under an earlier standard. Whether a particular car may continue to be driven depends on the final BS-VII rules, transitional provisions, vehicle category, registration status, pollution-under-control requirements and local operating restrictions.
It is also possible for a city or state to impose restrictions that are stricter than a vehicle owner expects. A BS label does not override a local rule governing entry, parking, fuel type, age, registration or pollution certification. Check the transport department and municipal rules that apply to the places where you will actually drive.

For a used-car buyer, the practical risk is usually condition and documentation rather than an immediate nationwide ban. Confirm the registration certificate, insurance, pollution certificate, service history and the vehicle’s exact emission approval. A seller’s claim that a car is “BS6” is not a substitute for those records.
Should you buy a BS6 car now or wait?
Buy now when timing and support matter most
Buying a current BS6 or BS6 Phase 2 model is reasonable when you need dependable transport in the next year or two, can obtain a clear warranty and have access to competent service. Compare vehicles on their actual specification, not on the assumption that every BS6 car has the same after-treatment system.
- Confirm the exact engine, transmission, fuel type and certification on the sales documents.
- Obtain the warranty booklet and ask which emission-control parts are covered, for how long and subject to what maintenance conditions.
- Check scheduled-service prices, parts availability and roadside support in your city.
- For a diesel, ask specifically about DPF, SCR, reagent, NOx-sensor and related diagnostic coverage.
- Verify that the fuel recommended in the owner’s manual is readily available on your regular routes.
Wait when the purchase is genuinely flexible
Waiting may suit a buyer who can postpone the purchase for several years and wants a vehicle certified under the final BS-VII rules. A final standard could bring more extensive real-world testing, monitoring and durability evidence. The trade-off is uncertainty: the draft timetable may change, launch sequencing may differ by category, and early models could carry unfamiliar hardware or service requirements.

Use a date-based decision rule

Powertrain differences buyers should investigate
Diesel
Diesel models are the most likely to involve the DPF and SCR systems highlighted in the government’s BS-VI explanation. Ask how the car handles regeneration, what reagent it uses if applicable, which warning messages appear and what a failed sensor or filter repair costs under warranty. Do not assume that two diesel cars with the same BS label have identical hardware or service intervals.
Petrol
Petrol vehicles still have emission-control equipment and diagnostic requirements, even when they do not use a diesel particulate filter or SCR system. Compare the manufacturer’s service schedule, catalyst and sensor warranty terms, and the documented fuel requirement.
CNG, hybrid and electric
CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles have different certification and maintenance profiles. A hybrid may combine an engine’s exhaust after-treatment with high-voltage components; an electric vehicle has no tailpipe exhaust but remains subject to the rules applicable to its vehicle category and other proposed tests. Ask for the exact approval and warranty documents rather than inferring compliance from the fuel or propulsion badge.

There is no defensible single “BS7 maintenance cost” to add to a purchase budget yet. Instead, request written information that lets you model the specific car.

- List scheduled services. Record the interval, labour charge, consumables and any mandatory software or diagnostic fees.
- Identify emission-system parts. Ask about DPF, SCR, reagent tank, NOx and oxygen sensors, catalysts, particulate sensors and associated control modules where fitted.
- Read warranty exclusions. Check coverage duration, kilometre limits, maintenance-compliance conditions and exclusions for contaminated fuel or incorrect fluids.
- Check support outside the selling city. Confirm authorised service locations and roadside assistance along your normal routes.
- Price the required fuel and fluids. Follow the owner’s manual and ask whether a specific reagent, oil grade or charging equipment is required.
- Plan for diagnostics. More monitoring can make fault-code diagnosis valuable, but a diagnostic appointment is not the same as a repair or a warranty approval.
Keep quotations and warranty answers in writing. A verbal assurance that a component is “covered” is not useful if the booklet later imposes a different limit.
Used-car inspection: what an OBD2 scanner can and cannot tell you
An OBD2 automotive diagnostic scanner can be useful during a used-car inspection. It may read stored diagnostic trouble codes, pending codes and monitor status, depending on the vehicle protocol and the scanner’s capabilities. Verify compatibility with the specific make, model, year and engine before buying or borrowing one.
The tool cannot prove the car’s BS type approval, certify real-world emissions, establish that a DPF or catalyst will last, or predict future regulatory costs. A recently cleared fault memory can also hide a problem until the vehicle completes enough drive cycles.

- Connect a compatible scanner with the ignition off or as instructed by the tool and vehicle manual.
- Read stored, pending and permanent codes, then save the code numbers and descriptions.
- Check whether emission monitors show incomplete status, which may indicate recent code clearing or insufficient drive cycles.
- Compare the scanner results with warning lights, service invoices, cold-start behaviour, smoke, unusual regeneration activity and the vehicle’s history.
- Have a qualified technician diagnose any code before negotiating or completing the purchase.
Use the registration certificate and manufacturer documentation to verify the emission standard; use the scanner only as one condition check.
BS6, BS7 and India’s separate CAFE rules
Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rules are separate from BS tailpipe-emission standards. The Government of India’s 30 September 2026 CAFE framework applies to manufacturers’ passenger-vehicle fleet averages from 1 April 2027 through 31 March 2032 and seeks about a 16.7% improvement in its benchmark.
Because CAFE is calculated across a manufacturer’s fleet, it can influence which engines, hybrids or electric models a company offers. It does not make every individual car BS-VII, and a BS-VI vehicle does not become non-compliant merely because a fleet-average target changes.
Questions to ask before signing a purchase order
- What exact BS certification and phase is recorded for this vehicle identification number or variant?
- Is the quoted car the same engine and equipment configuration described in the brochure and warranty booklet?
- Which emission-control components are covered, and what are the time and kilometre limits?
- What are the scheduled-service prices for the first five years?
- For diesel models, what are the DPF and SCR operating requirements and warning procedures?
- Which authorised workshops can service the car near my home and along my regular routes?
- Are there current state or city restrictions affecting this fuel type, vehicle age or registration?
- If I buy used, can I inspect the service history, pollution certificate, registration records and diagnostic codes?
- Is any claim about BS-VII certification based on a final notification or only on the 2026 draft?
Bottom-line decision
BS6 is the current nationwide standard, while BS7 remains a draft proposal as of October 2026. The proposed first N1 applicability date is 1 April 2030, with staged monitoring and non-exhaust requirements extending into 2035. A properly approved BS6 car does not automatically become illegal when BS7 arrives. Buy now if you need a vehicle and can secure the right warranty, service support and documentation; wait only when timing is flexible and access to a final BS-VII-certified model is more important than certainty today.
