Brazilian Cars You Didn’t Know Existed: Gurgel, Puma, Miura and Troller

From Gurgel’s two-seat XEF and electric Itaipú project to Puma’s GT Malzoni roots and Miura’s fiberglass sports cars, Brazil’s independent automakers explored strikingly different ideas.

Brazil’s independent carmakers built far more than sports cars: their ideas ranged from fiberglass-bodied coupes to compact city cars, electric projects and unusual off-roaders. These are Brazilian-developed cars and projects—not simply international models assembled in Brazil—and each shows a different answer to the question of what a small domestic automaker could build.

Gurgel: one maker, several very different ideas

Founded in 1969, Gurgel Motores pursued a distinctly Brazilian identity across vehicles designed for work, city streets and off-road travel. Its history includes the Xavante/X-12 family, the small XEF, the Carajás utility vehicle, the CENA national-car project and the Itaipú electric vehicle. The company’s account of its own history is the source for the launch dates and design descriptions below.

Xavante, X-12 and Tocantins: an off-roader with a different structure

Gurgel describes the X-12 family as using a Plasteel chassis—a structure combining plastic and steel—alongside a fiberglass cabin. Its Selectration system was intended to help manage traction. Rather than simply adapting a conventional body-on-frame off-roader, the design made materials and the chassis part of the vehicle’s identity. Gurgel’s company history documents these features.

XEF: a two-seat city car

Launched in 1982, the XEF was a two-seat minicar. Gurgel says its styling drew inspiration from Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Its small footprint and urban purpose made it a striking contrast to the company’s off-road models, showing that Gurgel’s ambitions were not limited to rough terrain.

Carajás: a utility vehicle with an unusual drivetrain layout

Gurgel launched the Carajás in 1984. The company describes a layout with the engine and clutch at the front and the gearbox and differential at the rear. That arrangement made the Carajás more than another rugged-looking utility vehicle: its mechanical packaging was a central part of the design.

CENA and Itaipú: projects beyond conventional cars

Gurgel’s CENA project, launched in 1987, aimed to create a car using 100% national parts. That was a goal, not proof that a production car achieved it. The company also says it opened an electric-vehicle production unit in 1980, beginning with the Itaipú E150. Together, these projects reveal a maker willing to pursue both domestic-industry ambitions and electric mobility well before either became an ordinary part of Brazil’s car market. Gurgel’s account provides the company’s chronology and descriptions.

Puma: a sports-car identity built from a racing prototype

Puma’s own historical account traces its origins to a track prototype developed by Rino Malzoni with support from Vemag. The GT Malzoni was the starting point for a distinct Brazilian sports-car lineage. The origin story is the company’s account, rather than an independently verified claim about every stage of the car’s development. Puma’s history page describes that beginning.

Puma’s story also illustrates a common approach among low-volume Brazilian makers: establish a strong identity through design and bodywork while relying on powertrains or components from outside suppliers. The result could look and feel unlike a mass-market car without requiring a small company to develop every major mechanical component itself.

Miura, Puma and Gurgel: different routes to a low-volume car

A BNDES study comparing Brazilian independent manufacturers highlights fiberglass bodies and outside engine sourcing among the approaches used by Puma and Miura. Gurgel stands apart in that comparison for developing its own Enertron engine. These choices reflect different priorities: distinctive styling and specialist sports-car appeal on one hand, and greater control over a core mechanical component on the other.

Maker What it built Construction or engineering detail
Gurgel Off-roaders, city cars, utility vehicles and experimental projects Its X-12 family used a plastic-and-steel Plasteel chassis and fiberglass cabin; Gurgel also developed the Enertron engine.
Puma Brazilian sports cars, with a lineage traced to the GT Malzoni Fiberglass bodies and outside engines are identified in the BNDES comparison.
Miura Limited-production sports cars Fiberglass bodies and outside engines are identified in the BNDES comparison.

The comparison is about approaches, not a claim that every model from each maker shared identical construction or mechanical parts. For independent manufacturers, sourcing an engine could make a project feasible while leaving body design and vehicle character as the main point of distinction. Gurgel’s Enertron represented a more ambitious attempt to control that engineering internally. The BNDES study discusses the firms’ technology and business histories.

Troller: an off-road brand’s later corporate chapter

Troller adds a more recent chapter to Brazil’s independent off-road story. The BNDES study reports that Ford do Brasil acquired the company in 2007 and later developed and produced the Troller T4. This is a historical account; the cited material does not establish Troller’s current production or corporate status. Troller’s official site is a company source, while the BNDES study provides the acquisition history.

Why these makers were unusual—and why they were vulnerable

These cars were not a single movement with one purpose. Puma and Miura pursued specialist sports-car identities; Gurgel moved between off-road utility, city transport and experimental projects; Troller became associated with off-road vehicles. Their shared distinction was that they were developed by Brazilian independent makes or as distinctive projects for the Brazilian market, rather than being defined simply by where a global manufacturer assembled them.

Low-volume production brought room for unusual engineering and styling, but it also made it difficult to spread development, manufacturing and sales costs across many vehicles. The BNDES study discusses financial constraints, scale, sales, management and competition in the endings of the independent firms it examines. It reports that Puma’s activities ended in 1990, Miura’s in 1992 and Gurgel’s in 1996. Those dates mark the end of the companies’ activities as reported by the study; they do not establish production totals or how many examples survive.
