Brake Cleaner vs. Carb Cleaner vs. Engine Degreaser: What to Use

No—brake cleaner, carburetor cleaner, and engine degreaser are different products for different jobs. Use brake cleaner on brake parts when its label permits, carburetor cleaner for deposits in carburetors and chokes, and engine degreaser for oily grime on an engine’s exterior and other approved surfaces. Check the exact product label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS): formulas, material compatibility, and hazards vary.

How the three cleaners differ

They are separate product categories, not interchangeable names. The California Air Resources Board lists brake cleaner, carburetor cleaner, and engine degreaser as distinct categories in its product information form.

Cleaner Intended task What to check
Brake and parts cleaner Cleaning brake components and removing contaminants such as brake fluid, grease, and oil. John Deere describes its product as leaving no residue; CRC says its cited product dries fast and leaves no residue. Confirm the label permits use on the specific brake components. Residue and compatibility claims apply to the product cited, not every brake cleaner. John Deere product descriptions; CRC product page.
Carburetor and choke cleaner Cleaning carburetors and chokes, including fuel-related deposits such as gum, varnish, and carbon. Check compatibility with the particular parts. John Deere describes its product as dissolving these deposits; Permatex describes a solvent blend formulated for residue on carburetors and chokes. John Deere; Permatex.
Engine cleaner or degreaser Removing oil, grease, and grime from an engine exterior and other surfaces allowed by the label. Follow the product’s application and rinsing directions. John Deere describes its product as spray-on and hose-off; that does not establish directions for every degreaser. John Deere product descriptions.

Which one should you use?

  1. Identify the surface and the contaminant. Brake parts with oily contamination call for a brake cleaner labeled for those parts; carburetor or choke deposits call for a carburetor cleaner; oily grime on an engine exterior calls for an engine degreaser labeled for that surface.
  2. Confirm the material is compatible. Do not infer compatibility with rubber, plastic, paint, or other materials from a product’s category name. Check the label before applying it.
  3. Read the exact can’s SDS. Formulations differ, including in flammability and whether they are chlorinated. Regional rules or product availability may also affect which formulation is sold.
  4. Follow the application directions. Do not assume that a cleaner intended to be rinsed off can be used where residue-free cleaning is needed, or that a brake cleaner is suitable for internal carburetor work.

Why the label and SDS matter for safety

A product name alone does not establish its hazards. For example, a CRC SDS issued March 28, 2024, for “Brakleen® Brake Parts Cleaner – 1 lb 4 oz” classifies that product as an extremely flammable aerosol. It advises keeping it away from ignition sources, using it outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, avoiding inhalation, and wearing eye protection and gloves. Apply those precautions to that identified product and consult the SDS for the cleaner you have. CRC SDS, issued 2024-03-28.

A separate CRC Brakleen SDS, issued May 1, 2025, warns that vapors exposed to extreme heat or hot surfaces may decompose into toxic gases, including hydrogen chloride and possibly phosgene. This is a product-specific warning, not a claim about every brake cleaner. Keep the product and vapors away from heat as its SDS directs. CRC SDS, issued 2025-05-01.

Can one cleaner substitute for another?

Do not substitute based only on the fact that both products remove grime or contain solvents. A degreaser meant for exterior engine surfaces is not automatically appropriate for brake friction parts; a brake cleaner is not automatically suited to carburetor deposits or sensitive materials. Use a substitute only if its label explicitly approves the surface and task, then follow that product’s application directions and SDS.
