The A-92 is the direct road corridor from Seville to Granada, roughly 250 km according to Turismo de la Provincia de Sevilla. The ten towns and landscapes below are optional stops—not a checklist for one drive. Choose a few that fit your interests and schedule, and check current opening hours, tickets, seasonal access and road conditions before setting out.
What is the best route from Seville to Granada?
For the direct drive, follow the A-92 east from Seville toward Granada. Turismo de la Provincia de Sevilla describes the corridor as about 250 km. The broader Washington Irving itinerary is a different journey: El legado andalusí’s 2025 leaflet describes a route of about 360 km from La Rábida in Huelva to Granada, with additional places and detours. Do not use that longer figure as the distance for the direct Seville–Granada drive.
The route’s appeal is its variety: historic towns, architecture and changing scenery. Spain’s official tourism site describes a road trip that visits places “worth stopping off at to explore them thoroughly.” Plan time to explore rather than assuming every stop can be squeezed into a single journey.
Where should I stop between Seville and Granada?
Use these ten ideas as a menu. Some are convenient route-town visits; others make more sense if you have time for a detour or a longer itinerary.

#1 Best Overall
1. Carmona: walls, churches and a historic centre
Carmona is a heritage-focused detour from Seville, with historic walls, the Alcázar and notable churches. Turismo de la Provincia de Sevilla gives varying approximate distances of roughly 30–37 km from Seville, so treat that as a range rather than a precise driving figure. It is a natural choice if you want to add a substantial old-town visit near the start of the trip.
2. Marchena: gates and the La Mota precinct
Marchena offers a route-town stop for visitors interested in the La Mota precinct, historic gates and churches. It suits a trip where architectural and historic sites matter more than minimizing stops.
3. Écija: layers of history
Écija is noted in the Washington Irving route for Roman remains and later architectural traces. Consider it for a town visit that adds historical depth to the drive.
4. Osuna: a practical A-92 stop
Osuna is a useful option on the A-92. The municipality’s access page estimates about 90 km and one hour from Seville, and about 165 km and one hour fifty minutes from Granada, via the A-92. These are municipal route estimates checked in 2026, not live traffic forecasts. Osuna’s position makes it a candidate for a town break without planning a separate northern detour.

5. Estepa: a shift in landscape
Estepa sits where the landscape transitions between the Seville plain and the Sub-Baetic foothills. It is a good choice if you want to break up the drive with a town visit and notice the changing terrain.
6. Fuente de Piedra: lagoon and open landscape
Fuente de Piedra is included in the official Washington Irving route for its lagoon and landscape. Wildlife conditions and visitor access can vary by season, so check local information before making it a fixed stop.
7. Antequera: town heritage and limestone scenery
Antequera combines historic-town interest with access to striking geological scenery. The Washington Irving leaflet highlights the town’s fortifications and the area’s limestone formations, including the Torcal landscape. Allow extra time if you want to explore beyond a brief town break.
8. Archidona: an eastern-route town
Archidona is another town option on the eastern stretch of the A-92 corridor. It can work as a stop for travelers who want another historic place along the route, rather than a longer landscape detour.

9. Loja: a historic stop before Granada
Loja is a historic route town between Antequera and Granada, named in the Washington Irving itinerary. It offers a possible final town visit before reaching Granada.
10. Montefrío: a scenic side trip
Montefrío is included in the Washington Irving route, but it lies north of the A-92 and is better treated as an optional side trip than a quick motorway stop. Choose it when you have time for the extra distance and want to make scenery a priority.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you do the Seville–Granada route in one day?
You can make the direct drive in a day, but visiting all ten suggestions is a different proposition. Several stops are towns worth exploring, and Montefrío is a detour; trying to include everything would turn the drive into a rushed checklist. Pick a small number of stops based on how much time you have and whether you prefer historic centres, architecture or landscapes.
- For built heritage: prioritize places such as Carmona, Marchena, Écija or Osuna.
- For landscapes: consider Fuente de Piedra, the limestone scenery around Antequera or the Montefrío detour.
- For a simpler A-92 itinerary: favor route-town stops and check the route and timing on the day.
What to check before leaving
- Confirm opening hours and ticket availability for attractions you plan to visit.
- Check seasonal access and wildlife conditions before planning around Fuente de Piedra.
- Review current road conditions and live journey times; published municipal estimates are not real-time forecasts.
- Decide in advance which stops are essential and which can be skipped if the day runs short.
Finish in Granada
Granada is the endpoint of both the direct Seville–Granada corridor and the Washington Irving route. The Alhambra is the city’s best-known anchor attraction, but do not assume same-day entry will be available: check official ticketing and schedule your visit around confirmed access.
