For a longer Bosch eBike ride, lower motor support before changing anything else, use Eco+ when your bike offers it, and set Range Control to preserve a charge reserve. For comfort, choose a route profile that matches the surface, configure the display around information you can read quickly, and use traction controls only when your drive unit supports them.
These changes do not create battery capacity. They alter how assistance is delivered, how navigation spends the available charge, and how much information or wheel control you have while riding. Actual distance depends on the bike, battery, rider and system weight, temperature, hills, wind, tire pressure, surface and riding style.

Start with motor support: the setting that has the clearest range effect
Bosch states that a higher support setting consumes more battery and that a lower power level can conserve the battery and increase range. In the eBike Flow app, the support control can typically be adjusted from -5 to +5. Bosch describes the endpoints as approximately 50% and 150% of that riding mode’s standard support, respectively.
This slider changes assistance relative to the selected mode; it is not a battery-percentage control and it does not guarantee a particular number of extra miles or kilometres. A setting that works on a flat commute may feel inadequate on a loaded bike or a steep, loose climb.

A practical support strategy
- Open the eBike Flow app and select the bike that is connected to your smart system.
- Open the riding-mode controls. Depending on the bike and software, the menu may be labelled Riding modes or Custom riding modes.
- Select Eco, Tour or Tour+ when the terrain permits steady pedalling with modest assistance.
- Move support below the mode’s default, starting at -1 or -2. Ride a familiar section and increase it only if cadence, control or comfort suffers.
- Keep higher support for sustained climbs, heavy cargo, a trailer, rough technical sections or situations in which maintaining momentum is a safety or handling concern.
Lowering support usually gives the largest range benefit available from a Flow setting because it directly reduces motor assistance. It also produces a more bicycle-like feel, but your legs must provide more of the work.
Which Bosch mode uses the least battery?
Among commonly available modes, Eco is the straightforward low-assistance choice. Eco+ is designed to go further by supplying assistance mainly when the load rises, such as on an incline, and switching the motor off when support is no longer needed. Bosch introduced Eco+ availability according to bike model and software, so it may not appear on every eBike.
| Mode or adjustment | Battery-use tendency | Feel and best use | Availability note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eco | Generally the lowest continuous assistance when ridden at its standard setting | Natural, leg-driven feel for flatter roads and steady fitness riding | Mode names and support ranges depend on the bike |
| Eco+ | Can reduce energy use by assisting mainly under higher load | Assistance appears when it is useful, then fades when the load falls | Requires a compatible model and software |
| Tour | More assistance than Eco; lowering its support can moderate consumption | Balanced help for varied paved routes and moderate gradients | Exact controls vary by drive unit |
| Tour+ | Variable assistance; consumption rises with stronger support | Smoother adaptation to changing terrain than a fixed low setting | Availability and behavior are model-dependent |
| Higher-performance custom settings | Usually the highest demand when support, power, torque or dynamics are increased | Fast response and stronger climbing help | Only the controls supported by the drive unit are shown |
There is no universal “miles saved” figure for any mode. Bosch does not publish a fixed range increase for Eco+, a negative support value or another Flow adjustment. Treat the mode table as a relative guide, then use your own route and battery history to refine the choice.

Use Range Control to arrive with a reserve
Range Control is the most useful Flow feature when the important outcome is not maximum distance but reaching a destination with a known minimum charge. In route planning, choose the minimum battery level you want remaining when you arrive. The smart system then adapts drive-unit support during the ride to target that reserve.
How to set it
- Open route planning in the eBike Flow app and enter the destination.
- Review the calculated route and open the battery or range options associated with that route.
- Choose Range Control and set the minimum arrival charge you need. Pick a reserve that covers the distance to a charger or the return leg rather than selecting the smallest possible percentage.
- Start navigation with the phone and bike connected as required by your smart-system setup. Watch the estimate during the ride and avoid overriding the plan with repeated high-support selections.
Bosch says the estimate uses system weight, route elevation and riding style. It becomes more accurate after the app has recorded activities, because the system can compare its estimate with your actual riding. A route with a heavy rider, child seat, panniers or cargo therefore may produce a different recommendation from the same route ridden on a lightly loaded bike.
Range Control is unavailable for S-Pedelecs and for Auto mode. If the control is missing, check the selected mode, bike category, smart-system software and app version before assuming the feature is broken.

Choose a route profile for comfort, not extra battery capacity
Flow route profiles change where the app sends you and what the ride feels like; they do not increase the battery’s stored energy. Changing a profile recalculates the route, so compare distance, elevation, road surface and expected stops before starting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Profile | What it prioritizes | When it improves comfort | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leisure | Bike-friendly and scenic roads | Useful when calmer roads, scenery and a less stressful pace matter more than arrival time | May be longer than the fastest practical route |
| Direct | Fastest practical A-to-B route | Useful when you need predictable travel time and are comfortable with a busier or less scenic route | Can feel less relaxed and may not suit every rider or surface |
| eMTB | Off-road trails | Best match for trail surfaces and off-road riding | Surface, elevation and technical riding can increase energy demand |
| Speed eBike | Routing appropriate for a speed eBike where permitted | Helps avoid a route profile that conflicts with the bike’s legal category | Availability and permitted roads depend on local rules and the bike |
For an uncomfortable ride, changing from Direct to Leisure may be more effective than increasing motor support. On a trail, eMTB routing can prevent a road-oriented path from taking you onto unsuitable surfaces. On a time-critical trip, Direct may be the better compromise even if it is less scenic.
Configure the display so useful information is visible
A display that shows the right information reduces unnecessary phone checks and helps you make earlier decisions about support. The Flow app supports display configuration. Bosch’s Purion 200 update in Flow release 1.22 added more than 30 information types and custom screen ordering.

Useful fields to prioritize
- Battery level: the immediate check before a long climb or an unplanned detour.
- Remaining range or arrival information: useful when following a Range Control plan.
- Ascent or elevation: helps explain why consumption is rising on a route with repeated climbs.
- Speed and riding mode: lets you confirm that an accidental mode change did not increase assistance.
- Trip distance and ride time: useful for judging whether a detour still fits your reserve.
Put the fields you actually use on the first screen or in an order that requires fewer button presses. A crowded screen is not automatically better; remove information that you never act on. Display choices affect awareness and comfort, not the battery’s physical capacity.
Fine-tune custom riding modes without wasting energy
Bosch custom modes can expose controls such as support, dynamics, power, torque, maximum speed and Extended Boost. The exact list depends on the drive unit, firmware and mode. These controls are performance trade-offs, not independent range upgrades.

How to balance the sliders
- Support: lower it first when range is the priority; raise it when the bike feels difficult to control or maintain at the required cadence.
- Dynamics: a more responsive response can feel lively on technical terrain, but frequent rapid assistance can increase energy demand.
- Power and torque: stronger output helps with steep climbs, cargo and acceleration; use less when the route is flatter or traction is limited.
- Maximum speed: higher assisted speed can shorten travel time but generally uses more energy because aerodynamic and rolling demands rise with speed.
- Extended Boost: useful for maintaining momentum over obstacles when supported, but it can deliver assistance for longer than a conservative setting.
Change one control at a time and test it on a known section. Save separate profiles for a loaded commute, an unladen road ride and technical trails rather than trying to make one profile do everything. Bosch lets riders select four favorite modes, so keep the profiles you use most accessible.

Set traction control and Drivetrain Tensioner for surface conditions
Flow version 1.38 adds four traction-control choices under Custom riding modes > Advanced > Traction control: deactivated, low, medium and high. Bosch says traction control regulates motor torque and can prevent the rear wheel from spinning.
| Traction setting | Use it when | Expected trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Deactivated | Dry, predictable surfaces where you want maximum trail response | More direct performance, but less electronic help if the tire loses grip |
| Low | Minor changes in grip or a rider who wants a light intervention | Retains a lively feel while adding some wheel-spin control |
| Medium | Mixed, damp or moderately loose surfaces | More stability, with assistance moderated sooner when slip begins |
| High | Loose, wet or technical surfaces where rear-wheel spin is a recurring problem | Maximum intervention can feel less immediate on clean, dry trail |
The current documentation lists support for Performance Line CX-R (BDU386Y), Performance Line CX (BDU384Y) and Cargo Line (BDU384Y). If your drive unit is not listed, the controls may not appear. Increasing traction control cannot create grip: tire choice, pressure, body position and line selection still matter.
The same advanced area can include a per-mode Drivetrain Tensioner toggle. Use it only when your model exposes it and follow the bike maker’s setup guidance. A drivetrain setting that is appropriate for rough terrain may add noise or resistance on a smooth road, while disabling a feature intended for a loaded or rough ride can reduce chain stability.
A comfort-first setup for common rides
Flat or gently rolling commute
- Choose Eco or Eco+ if available.
- Start with support at the mode default or below it, then lower it if the ride remains comfortable.
- Use Direct for the shortest practical trip or Leisure for calmer, bike-friendly roads.
- Display battery, speed and arrival information so you can adjust before a climb or detour.
Long day ride with uncertain charging
- Plan the route and set Range Control to a conservative minimum arrival charge.
- Use Eco+, Eco or a low-support Tour setting on easy sections.
- Reserve stronger support for climbs, headwinds, cargo or fatigue rather than leaving it high for the entire route.
- Check the estimate after the first recorded rides; the system’s prediction can improve as it learns your weight, route and riding style.
Loaded bike, trailer or steep terrain
- Keep enough support and torque to maintain control and a sustainable cadence.
- Use Range Control if the route and bike support it, but do not choose a reserve so small that a steep final climb leaves no margin.
- On loose or wet surfaces, select a higher traction-control level when the drive unit supports version 1.38 controls.
- Lower performance settings again after the demanding section instead of accepting high consumption for the rest of the ride.
Dry technical trail
- Select the eMTB-oriented route profile when navigation is needed.
- Use a custom mode with enough dynamics and torque for obstacles, but avoid maximum values on every section.
- Choose deactivated or low traction control only when the surface is predictable and you specifically want a more direct response.
- Raise traction control for roots, loose corners or wet patches, then return to the dry-trail setting when conditions change.
When a setting is missing or the estimate looks wrong
Flow features are tied to the bike’s hardware, drive unit, firmware and app release. Bosch’s own release notes and Help Center describe availability by model, so identical-looking bikes may show different menus.
- Update first: install the current eBike Flow app and the available smart-system or eBike firmware updates.
- Check the selected mode: Range Control does not appear in Auto mode, and some controls are available only inside Custom riding modes.
- Confirm the bike category: Range Control is not available for S-Pedelecs.
- Look at the drive-unit model: traction control in version 1.38 is documented for the listed BDU386Y and BDU384Y units.
- Recheck the route inputs: elevation, surface, selected profile, rider and system weight affect the estimate.
- Allow learning time: Bosch says range estimates become more accurate after activities are recorded.
- Ask a Bosch dealer: if an expected control remains absent after updates, the bike may not support it or may require a configuration change.
Do not interpret a changing range estimate as a battery fault by itself. Weather, wind, temperature, tire pressure, stop-start riding, load and surface can change consumption even when Flow settings remain identical.
What to change first
For range, reduce support, try Eco+ where it is available, and use Range Control to protect a deliberate arrival reserve. For comfort, select the route profile that matches the surface and pace, configure a readable display, and use traction control or drivetrain controls only when your drive unit and conditions justify them. Performance sliders are best treated as targeted adjustments for a climb, load or trail—not as permanent maximum settings. Bosch provides no universal extra-distance promise for these changes, so the most reliable tuning method is to record rides on the same route, change one setting, and compare the battery used under similar conditions.
