For an underrated used car, focus on specific model years with evidence behind them—not a vague promise that an engine is “bulletproof.” Consumer Reports’ August 14, 2026 guide lists several practical cars with retail ranges below or near $10,000, including the Honda Fit, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Toyota Prius. Those ranges are guide estimates, not guaranteed local prices, and a good model can still be a bad individual car if it was neglected or damaged.
Here are 10 candidates for U.S. shoppers, with the year and price evidence identified for each. The list is a starting point for comparing local examples, not a reliability ranking: the available sources do not establish that every listed year, engine, or transmission is equally dependable.
How to read this list
Consumer Reports’ August 14, 2026 under-$10,000 guide combines new-car road-test scores with owner-survey data and publishes retail price ranges for particular model years. Prices below are those guide ranges; they are not current quotes for every ZIP code, trim, mileage, or condition. The guide itself cautions that each car’s history differs. Consumer Reports’ broader recommendation criteria also draw on multiple years of member-survey reliability results and standard electronic stability control, rather than a guarantee about a specific used car. Consumer Reports’ under-$10,000 guide and used-car overview explain the context.
“Under the radar” is a useful shopping idea, not a proven explanation for any particular car’s price. Compare the exact vehicle against local listings and your needs. Safety is a separate question from reliability and affordability: the IIHS/CR list is a safety screen, not a complete ranking of the cars below.

10 used cars to consider
1. Honda Fit (2016, 2013, 2012, or 2011)
The Fit is a small hatchback worth a look if you want a compact footprint and a flexible cabin. Consumer Reports lists the 2016 at $8,850–$9,975; 2013 at $6,625–$8,150; 2012 at $6,200–$7,600; and 2011 at $5,800–$7,025 in its August 14, 2026 guide. Those figures are CR retail ranges, not a promise that a particular car will sell in that band. CR’s current overview separately shows a 2016 Fit at $9,275–$9,600 and EPA fuel economy of 34 mpg; that is a distinct page and price series, so do not combine the numbers. CR’s guide · CR’s current overview
For any year, verify the car’s service history and condition; the sources do not establish one reliability record for every Fit powertrain or individual example.
2. Hyundai Elantra (2019)
The 2019 Elantra is a newer compact-sedan option in CR’s affordable guide, with an August 14, 2026 retail range of $7,750–$10,950. The range crosses the $10,000 mark, so it is a candidate to check against local inventory rather than a guaranteed sub-$10,000 buy. CR’s current overview separately gives the 2019 Elantra a $7,550–$10,575 range and EPA fuel economy of 33 mpg. CR’s guide · CR’s current overview
Confirm the exact trim and engine, maintenance record, and title history; these sources do not establish that every configuration shares the same reliability or ownership costs.

3. Mazda3 (2017, 2015, or 2013)
The Mazda3 gives shoppers a compact-car alternative to the better-known Corolla and Civic. CR’s August 14, 2026 ranges are $6,600–$10,000 for 2017, $6,250–$8,875 for 2015, and $5,025–$7,600 for 2013. Separately, the IIHS/CR May 2026 used-car safety list includes Mazda3 model years 2014–18 among its more affordable “Good Choices”; its median retail price for the earliest qualifying year, 2014, was $6,900, based on Black Book data from April 2026 and rounded to the nearest $100. That is a different price measure from CR’s ranges. CR’s guide · IIHS/CR safety list
The safety-list inclusion applies to the specified model-year pool; it should not be read as proof that every trim has identical equipment or that a used car has been maintained well.
4. Toyota Corolla (2016, 2015, 2014, or 2012)
The Corolla is a straightforward compact sedan with several years in CR’s guide: 2016 at $8,575–$11,025; 2015 at $8,025–$9,800; 2014 at $7,550–$8,450; and 2012 at $7,050–$7,550, all from the August 14, 2026 guide. The 2016 range goes above $10,000. CR’s separate current overview lists the 2016 at $8,000–$10,575 and EPA fuel economy of 32 mpg. Do not treat those two sources’ ranges as a single price series. 5. Toyota Prius c (2016, 2015, 2014, or 2013)
The Prius c is a small hybrid hatchback for shoppers prioritizing fuel economy and an urban-friendly size. CR’s August 14, 2026 guide lists the 2016 at $8,700–$9,625, 2015 at $8,100, 2014 at $7,525, and 2013 at $6,975. Its separate current overview gives the 2016 Prius c a $9,275–$9,500 range and EPA fuel economy of 50 mpg. These figures come from different CR pages and should remain distinct. CR’s guide · CR’s current overview
Because this is a hybrid, have a qualified mechanic assess the exact car and review its maintenance and diagnostic history; the cited price and fuel-economy information is not a condition assessment.
6. Toyota Prius (2015, 2014, 2013, or 2012)
The standard Prius is another hybrid option, with more years in CR’s guide: 2015 at $9,675–$10,300; 2014 at $8,450–$9,675; 2013 at $7,900–$8,275; and 2012 at $7,375–$8,025. These are CR retail ranges from August 14, 2026. The source does not provide a fuel-economy figure for these entries, so compare EPA ratings for the exact year and configuration separately rather than assuming one value fits all.
Have the car inspected and review maintenance documentation before purchase. The guide’s price range does not establish the condition of a specific hybrid system or vehicle.

7. Toyota Prius v (2013)
The 2013 Prius v adds a larger wagon body to the Prius family, making it a candidate for buyers who need more cargo utility than a compact hatchback. CR’s August 14, 2026 guide lists a retail figure of $8,000. The supplied price evidence does not state a range, fuel-economy number, or model-specific reliability finding for this entry, so evaluate those details for the exact car you are considering. Consumer Reports’ guide
8. Honda Accord (2013, 2012, or 2006)
The Accord is a midsize-sedan choice for shoppers who want a larger car than a Fit or Corolla. CR’s August 14, 2026 guide lists the 2013 at $7,700–$9,125, the 2012 at $7,100–$7,825, and the 2006 at $4,075–$5,425. Separately, the May 2026 IIHS/CR safety list includes 2013–25 Accord sedans among its “Good Choices”; the median retail price for the earliest qualifying model year, 2013, was $8,300, based on Black Book data from April 2026 and rounded to the nearest $100. That safety-list median is not the same calculation as CR’s guide range. CR’s guide · IIHS/CR safety list
The IIHS/CR inclusion adds a safety-screening reference for the relevant sedan years, not a blanket endorsement of every trim or a mechanical reliability guarantee.
9. Mazda6 (2016 or 2015)
The Mazda6 is a midsize-sedan alternative to the Accord, with CR’s August 14, 2026 guide listing the 2016 at $7,400–$9,925 and the 2015 at $6,750–$8,700. CR’s separate current overview gives the 2016 a $7,500–$9,875 range and EPA fuel economy of 30 mpg. In the May 2026 IIHS/CR list, Mazda6 model years 2016–18 appear among affordable “Good Choices”; the earliest qualifying year, 2016, had a $8,400 median retail price in Black Book data from April 2026, rounded to the nearest $100. These are three different presentations of price information, not a unified valuation. CR’s guide · CR’s current overview · IIHS/CR safety list

10. Toyota Avalon (2013)
The 2013 Avalon is a larger, more comfort-oriented sedan candidate than the compact models on this list. CR’s August 14, 2026 guide lists it at $8,875–$9,975. The cited sources do not provide a matching fuel-economy figure or safety-list inclusion for this entry, so check the specific trim and year using the relevant vehicle records and ratings. The IIHS and Consumer Reports’ May 27, 2026 release describes 45 used vehicles starting under $10,000 as offering good crash protection and suitability for teen drivers. The list screens vehicles using crash protection criteria, including a good driver-side small-overlap front rating and standard electronic stability control across the list; its teen-focused exclusions include performance vehicles, minicars, vehicles under 2,750 pounds, and large SUVs or pickups deemed harder to handle. Some top-tier “Best Choices” add qualifying headlights and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The May 2026 page also identifies 29 additional used vehicles under $20,000 with highly rated headlights and pedestrian-detecting automatic emergency braking. These are safety distinctions, not a reliability ranking of the ten cars here. Read the IIHS/CR criteria and list.
IIHS Senior Research Scientist Rebecca Weast said of the teen list, “That said, the suggestions are suitable for drivers of any age looking to balance affordability with crash protection and crash avoidance.” That is a safety-and-affordability framing, not a claim that any car is trouble-free.
Quick Recap
How to check whether a bargain is actually a good buy
- Match the exact car to the evidence. Record its model year, trim, engine, and transmission. Do not assume a result for one generation or configuration applies to another.
- Review its history and maintenance records. Investigate accidents, flood exposure, title issues, and gaps in service documentation. A vehicle-history report can help, but it cannot replace an in-person inspection.
- Arrange a pre-purchase inspection. Ask a qualified mechanic to inspect the specific vehicle. Consumer Reports warns that even a recommended model can be a poor example because of factory variation or neglected maintenance.
- Check for open recalls by VIN or license plate. Use the recall-check resource linked by IIHS, and check periodically because recall status can change. IIHS points buyers to recall checking.
- Get an insurance quote before committing. IIHS notes that reliability and insurance costs are additional considerations beyond its safety-and-price list.
- Compare local listings on an apples-to-apples basis. Match year, trim, mileage, condition, and equipment; then decide whether the asking price makes sense in your market.
