India’s vehicle sales are growing strongly, but dealers warn that repeated price increases could weaken the affordability gains associated with the previous GST cut and slow festive-season momentum. That is a risk, not evidence that price hikes have already reversed sales growth.
What dealers are warning about
The concern is that higher vehicle prices may eat into the affordability benefit buyers associated with the GST cut and make it harder to sustain demand through the festive season. FADA president Sai Giridhar said consumer offer schemes could partly offset the increases, but added that consumers’ perception of declining affordability could affect the industry.
In a 6 October note quoted by Hindustan Times, FADA said: “Protecting the GST gain is, to our mind, the key to converting the festive season into durable growth.” The note described affordability as the cycle’s key engine and further price increases as dealers’ foremost risk for the coming quarter.
Sales are rising, but the figures do not settle the affordability question
FADA data released on 6 October, as reported by Hindustan Times, put vehicle retail sales in the first half of FY27 at 15.51 million units, up 20.77% year on year. The reported category figures were:

These figures establish a strong reported sales baseline; they do not show that price increases caused a slowdown. The warning concerns what may happen next as buyers weigh affordability during the festive period.
Price increases reported by automakers
Hindustan Times reported several increases in 2026. They differ in timing, amount, and coverage: some apply to selected models, others to categories or portfolios. They are not directly comparable as a single industry-wide increase.

These details are attributed to Hindustan Times’ reporting; the company announcements were not separately inspected. The different bases—rupee amounts, percentages, selected models, and broader portfolios—mean the figures should not be ranked as if they describe equivalent price changes.

Price is only one of the risks cited in the report. Nuvama Institutional Equities wrote in a 9 September note that moderation in rural demand, rainfall deficits in some states, and the demand impact of price increases across categories were downside risks to sales. The year of that note is not specified in the report.

At a September press conference, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles managing director and chief executive Shailesh Chandra said only a limited part of cost increases had been passed on to consumers and that further increases were likely over the next few months. Hindustan Times linked the cost pressure to effects of the West Asia war on supply chains and logistics.

What to watch during the festive season
- Affordability: whether buyers continue to perceive vehicles as affordable after successive price changes.
- Offers: whether consumer schemes meaningfully offset higher listed prices, as Giridhar suggested they could.
- Rural demand and rainfall: whether the rural softness and state-level rainfall deficits cited by Nuvama persist.
- Retail sales: whether growth continues beyond the strong H1 FY27 figures, rather than assuming those results guarantee the next period’s performance.
