BMW’s new F 450 R is a clear specification step up from the G 310 R: it has a 420 cc parallel twin rated at 48 hp and 43 Nm, compared with the G 310 R’s 313 cc single, 34 hp and 28 Nm in BMW Singapore’s published specifications. It also adds more advanced rider aids. Whether it is the better bike for a particular rider remains unanswered until local pricing, availability and independent riding impressions are known.
What the BMW F 450 R is
BMW Motorrad presented the F 450 R on 1 October 2026 as a standalone naked motorcycle in its F 450 family. BMW says its styling follows the S 1000 R design language and positions it in Europe’s A2 licence class. The company lists a ready-to-ride weight of 175 kg. These are manufacturer specifications and positioning, not independent test findings. BMW Motorrad’s launch announcement does not give a price or on-sale date.
Engine and transmission
The F 450 R uses a fuel-injected 420 cc parallel twin with a 135-degree crankpin offset. BMW rates it at 35 kW (48 hp) at 8,750 rpm and 43 Nm at 6,750 rpm, and says 80 percent of the available torque is on tap at 3,000 rpm. It has a six-speed gearbox and X-ring chain. Those figures suggest a more substantial engine on paper than the G 310 R’s single, but they do not establish how either bike accelerates or feels on the road.
Clutch and shifting options
Shift Assistant Pro, BMW’s system for clutchless shifting, is standard on every F 450 R variant except Base and can be retrofitted to Base. The Easy Ride Clutch is factory-fitted with the M Sport Innovation Package or available as an Original BMW Motorrad Accessory for other variants. BMW says it engages the clutch according to engine speed; paired with Shift Assistant Pro, it allows starting, stopping and shifting without operating the clutch lever. The lever remains available for deliberate clutch use.

F 450 R and G 310 R specifications compared
The comparison below uses BMW’s global F 450 R launch specifications and the G 310 R technical data published for Singapore. Markets and configurations differ, so these figures should not be treated as a controlled, same-market comparison.

The F 450 R’s listed 48 hp and 43 Nm versus the G 310 R’s 34 hp and 28 Nm make the strongest case for the new model as an upgrade. Its larger front disc and broader set of electronic aids are further equipment differences, not evidence of shorter stopping distances or better real-world safety. Likewise, the weight figures come from different market sources and are not confirmed as equivalent configurations.

The consumption figures are not directly comparable: BMW specifies WMTC for the Singapore G 310 R figure, but the F 450 R launch release does not identify a test cycle. BMW claims more than 350 km from the F 450 R’s 14-liter tank; the Singapore G 310 R page gives an 11.0-liter usable tank but no corresponding range claim.
How the F 450 R variants differ
BMW lists four configurations. The equipment distinction matters: the headline model’s available technology is not necessarily included on the Base version.

Rain, Road and Dynamic are the standard riding modes; Riding Modes Pro adds Dynamic Pro. BMW also lists heated grips, a 6.5-inch TFT with navigation, phone and music functions, and a USB-C cockpit port. Equipment can vary by country, so check the exact specification offered by a local BMW Motorrad dealer.
Chassis, suspension and fit
BMW describes the F 450 R’s chassis as derived from the F 450 GS concept but specifically tuned for road use. It has a tubular-steel frame, with the engine serving as a stressed, load-bearing element. The 43 mm KYB upside-down fork is adjustable for compression and rebound on Sport Suspension; the KYB rear shock has adjustable spring preload and rebound damping. Those design details describe the hardware, not tested handling performance.

The seat-height ranges overlap: BMW lists 775, 790 and 810 mm for the F 450 R, and BMW Singapore lists 770, 785 and 800 mm for the G 310 R. A height figure alone cannot tell you which motorcycle will fit. Seat shape, suspension sag, footwear and a rider’s proportions affect how securely they can place their feet, so an in-person fit check is more useful than choosing by the published number alone.

On the published specifications, the F 450 R is the more powerful and more electronically equipped roadster, while the G 310 R is listed as lighter in BMW Singapore’s market-specific data. That makes the new bike a plausible step up for someone seeking more output and additional rider aids, but not an automatic replacement for every G 310 R owner. The figures do not settle questions of comfort, handling, ease of use or value.

Price and availability are essential to that decision, and neither appears in BMW’s global F 450 R announcement. BMW USA’s page lists a 2025 G 310 R at a $5,195 base MSRP and $5,390 as shown, excluding a $595 destination and handling fee, taxes, title, license and registration; the page identifies the pictured motorcycle as a European model. Those U.S.-page figures are not a current F 450 R price and do not provide an apples-to-apples comparison. Check BMW Motorrad in your country for the F 450 R’s local price and ordering timetable before judging its value.
There is no independent direct comparison in the cited material. BMW Motorrad CEO Markus Flasch described the F 450 R as “light, agile, and full of character,” but that is BMW’s launch characterization, not a third-party road test. A buyer should treat the specification advantage as established and the riding verdict as still open.
