General Motors reported lower U.S. sales in the third quarter of 2026, but the decline alone does not show that GM deliberately held back vehicles or always prefers selling fewer cars. GM attributed the drop to a smaller electric-vehicle market and discontinued models, while describing pricing, incentives and inventory discipline as part of its approach. Clark Howard’s broader claim—that automakers may favor higher prices over market share—is an interpretation, not a conclusion proved by GM’s sales figures.
What Clark Howard reportedly said
An October 6, 2026, 24/7 Wall St. article attributes this statement to Clark Howard: “Ford, General Motors, and some European brands would rather sell ‘a lot fewer cars for a lot more money than get market share.’” The article is the source for the quotation; an original broadcast, recording or transcript was not available to independently confirm its context.
The statement is a broad interpretation of automakers’ priorities. It should not be mistaken for a GM announcement that the company is intentionally limiting sales, or as proof that its Q3 decline resulted from holding back inventory.
What GM’s sales figures do—and do not—show
Q3 2026: lower sales, with causes GM identified
GM reported 670,974 U.S. vehicle sales in Q3 2026, down 6% year over year. The company said the smaller EV market and discontinued vehicles contributed to the decline. It also said sales of its highest-volume vehicles were in line with the prior-year quarter. Those figures establish that GM sold fewer vehicles overall than a year earlier; they do not establish that the company restricted supply to preserve prices. GM’s Q3 sales release reports the decline as 6%.

Q2 2026: GM’s stated emphasis on discipline
In Q2, GM reported 714,896 U.S. vehicle sales, down 4% year over year. In its sales release, Duncan Aldred, GM President of North America, said: “The depth, breadth and appeal of our vehicle portfolio allows us to lead the market in sales, while maintaining discipline on inventory, pricing and incentives to deliver strong margins.” That is direct evidence of the company’s stated approach—not evidence that every model or dealer maintained a particular price. Q2 margin and pricing commentary
GM reported an 8.6% North American adjusted EBIT margin for Q2 2026, up 2.5 percentage points year over year. Its shareholder letter said, “Pricing is consistent,” and described North American customer demand as strong, particularly for pickups and SUVs. These are company-reported results and commentary; they do not independently establish that a specific pricing decision caused the margin change. GM’s Q2 shareholder letter.

GM scheduled its Q3 financial results for October 20, 2026. As of October 7, those results were not yet available, so the Q3 sales release cannot be used to claim that Q3 profit confirms or disproves Howard’s interpretation. GM’s earnings-call announcement.
How to read the “price over volume” claim
There are three separate points here: GM’s reported Q3 sales fell; GM says it manages inventory, pricing and incentives with margins in mind; and Howard’s reported remark generalizes that automakers may prefer higher prices to market-share gains. The first two are supported by GM’s releases and statements. The third is an interpretation attributed to Howard. Neither the sales decline nor GM’s comments prove that the company always prefers lower volume, or that it intentionally withheld supply in Q3.

How shoppers can compare GM offers
A disciplined approach is to compare the complete cost of buying and financing a vehicle—not just its advertised discount or monthly payment. Get written offers and compare vehicles with similar equipment and in the same category; a cheaper model with different features may not be a like-for-like alternative.
- Request written quotes from multiple dealers. Ask each dealer for the out-the-door price, including mandatory fees, and identify any conditions attached to discounts or incentives.
- Compare the vehicle itself. Match model, trim, equipment and vehicle category as closely as possible before treating one offer as cheaper.
- Compare financing terms. Record the APR, loan duration and down payment for each offer. Seek preapproval so you can assess a dealer’s financing offer against another option.
- Calculate the total amount repaid. A lower monthly payment can come from stretching the loan over more months rather than reducing the total cost. Compare total repayment alongside the out-the-door price.
The 24/7 Wall St. article illustrates the effect of borrowing $50,000 rather than $37,000 for 60 months at 7% APR: about $15,445 more over the term under its assumptions. It assumes no down payment and excludes taxes and fees; it is an illustration, not a market-rate finding or a personalized quote. The article’s example.
