BMW’s Heart of Joy is an installed control computer for its Neue Klasse electric vehicles, not a standalone gadget. It coordinates drivetrain and driving-dynamics functions—including braking and energy recuperation—with BMW-developed Dynamic Performance Control software. BMW says the integration makes control responses faster; its performance and efficiency figures remain manufacturer claims, not independently verified results.
What is BMW’s Heart of Joy?
BMW describes Heart of Joy as one of four high-performance computers in the Neue Klasse vehicle electronics architecture. It is responsible for drivetrain and driving-dynamics management, rather than every computing task in the car. BMW’s overview says its remit includes drivetrain, brakes, charging, recuperation and steering subfunctions. BMW Group’s technical overview and its Heart of Joy summary describe the hardware alongside BMW Dynamic Performance Control, software the company says it developed entirely in-house.
The name can make the system sound like a single magic component. A more useful way to understand it is as an integrated controller coordinating several vehicle functions that otherwise could be managed by separate systems. BMW has not presented it as a consumer product or retail replacement module.
How does it coordinate driving and braking?
When an electric car slows, its electric drive can recover some of the vehicle’s motion as electrical energy. This is regenerative braking, or recuperation. The friction brakes still matter: they provide braking when stronger deceleration is needed, including emergency or very sporty braking, according to BMW.

Heart of Joy coordinates drivetrain and braking control so the car can manage recuperation and conventional braking together. BMW says this integration is intended to make everyday braking smoother while recovering energy. Those are BMW’s descriptions of the system, not conclusions established by independent testing in the sources cited here.
What does BMW claim is different?
BMW’s 17 February 2025 technical article says Heart of Joy processes information ten times faster than previous systems. The comparison is BMW’s own; the source does not provide an independent test or a detailed benchmark protocol.

BMW also said the integrated management and energy recovery could improve efficiency by up to 25 percent. That is a manufacturer-reported figure, not a guaranteed range gain for every Neue Klasse vehicle. It should not be read as a promise that a particular model will travel 25 percent farther: the cited claim concerns efficiency, and no independent validation is provided.
In the same article, Frank Weber, then a BMW AG board member responsible for development, called the approach “Efficient Dynamics squared.”

What does Heart of Joy do in the BMW iX3?
BMW’s 5 January 2026 CES release gives a production-model example: the new BMW iX3. The release says 98 percent of everyday braking maneuvers in that model use recuperation without the friction brakes. The figure is BMW’s claim, specifically about everyday braking in the new iX3; it is not an independently measured result or a figure that should be generalized to other EVs.
The same release places Heart of Joy among four high-performance computers in the Neue Klasse electronics architecture and assigns it drivetrain and driving-dynamics management. Details about the iX3 50 xDrive and other listed features can vary by market and configuration, so the release should not be treated as proof that every specification applies worldwide. Is Heart of Joy something owners can buy or retrofit?
The available BMW material describes Heart of Joy as installed vehicle electronics within the Neue Klasse architecture. It does not establish a standalone retail module, an owner retrofit, or a special diagnostic tool required to use it. BMW’s system description and rollout can evolve as more Neue Klasse models arrive or specifications change. Availability and equipment should therefore be checked against the current BMW information for the relevant market and model.
