Designed by Max Friz, it combined a transverse flat-twin boxer engine, a gearbox mounted directly to the engine and shaft drive to the rear wheel—a layout that became closely identified with BMW motorcycles.
What was BMW’s first motorcycle?
The R 32 was BMW’s first motorcycle: a purpose-designed machine, not simply a BMW engine supplied to another manufacturer. BMW’s company history describes its unveiling as the start of the brand’s motorcycle success story. The Technik Museum Sinsheim likewise calls it BMW’s first in-house development and first genuine BMW motorcycle.
BMW’s PressClub dates the public presentation to 28 September 1923, at the German Motor Show in Berlin. The company had been associated with aircraft-engine production; the R 32 marked a new direction.
Who designed the R 32, and when?
Max Friz was responsible for the R 32’s design. BMW Motorrad’s retrospective says he put the first BMW motorcycle on the drawing board at full scale in December 1922, within weeks of receiving the assignment.

- December 1922: Friz began the full-scale design, according to BMW Motorrad.
- 28 September 1923: BMW presented the R 32 at the Berlin motor show, according to BMW Group PressClub.
How was the R 32 designed?
A transverse boxer engine
The R 32 had a two-cylinder, four-stroke boxer engine, with its cylinders extending to either side of the motorcycle rather than pointing along its direction of travel. This placed the crankshaft lengthwise. BMW later highlighted the layout’s exposure to airflow: the cylinders projected into the air, which the company says gave both sides equal cooling air.
A gearbox mounted to the engine
Friz placed the gearbox directly against the engine. BMW’s technical background describes the transmission shafts as longitudinal and connected to the engine through a friction clutch. The arrangement made the engine, clutch and transmission a closely integrated powertrain.

Shaft drive to the rear wheel
Power reached the rear wheel through a drive shaft rather than an exposed chain or belt. BMW’s corporate history emphasizes that enclosing vulnerable components reduced maintenance. That is BMW’s stated advantage for this arrangement, not a universal claim that shaft drive is superior for every motorcycle.
BMW PressClub’s account is careful about what was new: the individual elements already existed. Friz’s contribution was combining them in the R 32. It is more accurate to call the motorcycle an influential integration of boxer engine, attached gearbox and shaft drive than to claim BMW invented each component. BMW PressClub describes the R 32 as the first motorcycle in the world with a flat-twin and shaft drive; that broad historical superlative is BMW’s characterization.

R 32 specifications—and a displacement conflict
The available published figures do not agree on engine displacement. The Technik Museum Sinsheim’s exhibit page lists 486 cc, while BMW Group’s 2023 anniversary page lists 198 cc. The discrepancy is substantial, and neither figure should be presented as settled on the strength of these pages alone.

The price is a period figure, not a modern-value comparison; the available source does not establish a conversion or purchasing-power equivalent.

Why did the R 32 matter to BMW?
The R 32 gave BMW a clear mechanical identity at the outset of its motorcycle history. BMW presents the boxer-and-shaft-drive combination as a signature of its motorcycles, while the R 32 shows how Friz established that recognizable layout by bringing existing engineering ideas together in one purpose-designed machine. The distinction matters: the model’s historical significance rests on the integration and the lasting BMW association, not on a claim that every element was new.
