BMW does sell paid digital services and has offered certain eligible vehicle functions for access after purchase. But that does not mean every BMW feature is subscription-locked: what is available depends on the car, its equipment and software, the country, and the offer shown for that vehicle.
What BMW means by subscriptions and Functions on Demand
BMW uses more than one model. BMW Digital Premium is a paid digital-services package: BMW’s UK ConnectedDrive terms, revised 10 October 2025, say it provides digital content and vehicle features for a one-off or recurring payment. Depending on the vehicle’s operating system and the current offer, the package may include digital content, apps, extended navigation and parking-assistance features, personal-assistance functions, settings, and data connectivity. Functions on Demand is a different idea: BMW has offered eligible customers the option to add or try certain vehicle functions after buying the car, for a defined period or other offer. BMW’s announcement says equipment purchased at the factory remains available without an additional charge. Which BMW features require a subscription?
There is no universal list that applies to every BMW. Digital Premium’s inclusions depend on the vehicle’s operating system and current offer, while Functions on Demand availability depends on the market and the car’s technical requirements and equipment. That is why questions such as “Does BMW make you pay monthly for heated seats?” cannot be answered for the brand as a whole from these offers. Check the specific feature against the specific car and country, and distinguish a feature included with factory-purchased equipment from an optional post-purchase booking.
Does your BMW already have the hardware?
A subscription or software activation is not proof that every car has the hardware a function needs. BMW Australia’s terms say some activated functions depend on correct operation of vehicle hardware and software. BMW’s Functions on Demand announcement also makes offers subject to technical requirements and equipment. How to check availability and cost for your car
- Link your vehicle identification number (VIN) to your BMW ID and open the ConnectedDrive Store for your market. BMW’s UK terms direct customers to the store to check availability; BMW Australia lists a BMW ID, linked vehicle, and payment details among its purchase conditions. BMW UK terms BMW Australia terms
- Check the exact service or function offered for that VIN. Availability can depend on market, model, equipment, software, and technical capacity.
- Read the booking screen for the price, payment duration, renewal or cancellation terms, and service scope. BMW says costs are shown during booking, and the terms do not establish one cancellation rule that applies everywhere. BMW Australia ConnectedDrive terms BMW UK terms
- Before choosing a recurring option, compare its total cost over the time you expect to keep the car with any factory-purchase cost, and verify whether the feature is already included in your vehicle’s equipment.
How much does BMW ConnectedDrive cost?
There is no single current price for all BMW owners. BMW directs customers to the booking flow for the relevant service and vehicle; the available offer can vary by market and car.
For historical context only, BMW Group gave a Germany example in its 2023 autumn model-update announcement: €9.98 per month, a provisional annual fee of €99, and a three-month free trial. What to compare before booking
- The exact function or service and whether it is already included with factory-purchased equipment.
- Your car’s generation, equipment, and software, plus the country where it is registered.
- Whether payment is one-off or recurring, the period covered, and the total cost for your expected ownership period.
- The renewal and cancellation terms shown at checkout for that offer.
BMW CarData is a separate service ecosystem
BMW CarData is not a way to buy ConnectedDrive subscriptions. It is a separate ecosystem in which service providers in the European Economic Area can register to build services using connected-vehicle data, subject to the customer’s explicit agreement to share data. BMW says providers pay for data actually accessed and received; capabilities vary by vehicle, and the latest recorded data is not a real-time direct request to the car. BMW CarData
