BMW’s 3.0-litre, three-turbo diesel was rated at 381 hp (381 bhp), 740 Nm and up to 44.8 mpg imperial in the M550d xDrive sedan’s official test-cycle figures. The four original M Performance applications were the M550d xDrive sedan and Touring, X5 M50d and X6 M50d. The widely repeated “45 mpg” figure is a rounded version of the sedan’s result—not a figure shared by all four cars.
What was BMW’s 381 bhp triple-turbo diesel?
BMW announced the engine in January 2012 for its new M Performance Automobiles. It was a 2,993 cc inline-six diesel with three turbochargers, common-rail direct injection using piezo injectors, and a maximum injection pressure of 2,200 bar. BMW quoted 280 kW/381 hp and peak torque of 740 Nm (546 lb-ft). The company’s stated power band was 4,000–4,400 rpm; peak torque was available from 2,000 to 3,000 rpm. BMW Group’s January 2012 announcement gives the engine specification and its first applications.
BMW positioned M Performance between M Sport variants and its full M high-performance models. The four cars in the initial rollout were two 5 Series models and two X models—not four separate engine versions.
Which four cars got the engine first?
| Initial model | Body style | 0–100 km/h | Official fuel consumption |
|---|---|---|---|
| M550d xDrive | Four-door sedan | 4.7 seconds | 44.8 mpg imperial (6.3 L/100 km) |
| M550d xDrive | Touring estate | 4.9 seconds | 44.1 mpg imperial (6.4 L/100 km) |
| X5 M50d | Sports Activity Vehicle (SUV) | 5.4 seconds | 37.7 mpg imperial; 199 g/km CO₂ |
| X6 M50d | Sports Activity Coupé | 5.3 seconds | 36.7 mpg imperial; 204 g/km CO₂ |
The acceleration and consumption figures are BMW’s published launch specifications, not independent measurements or promises of real-world results. The 5 Series figures come from BMW’s initial release; the X5 and X6 figures above are from BMW’s 2012 UK launch material. See the initial BMW release and its UK X6 launch release.

What does “45 mpg” mean?
It rounds the M550d xDrive sedan’s official figure of 44.8 mpg imperial. That is approximately 6.3 L/100 km in the same published specification. It is not a universal rating for the four models: BMW quoted 44.1 mpg imperial for the Touring, 37.7 for the X5 M50d, and 36.7 for the X6 M50d in the cited launch figures.
These are period test-cycle results. They should not be read as owner-reported economy or as a guarantee of what a particular car will achieve on the road. The mpg figures are imperial gallons, not US gallons.

Why do BMW’s X5 M50d fuel figures differ?
BMW later published a different X5 M50d consumption figure: 42.2 mpg imperial (6.7 L/100 km), with CO₂ emissions of 177 g/km, in its May 2013 launch material for the new X5. That is not the same figure as the 37.7 mpg and 199 g/km quoted in BMW’s 2012 UK release. The releases concern different model-year, market or vehicle specifications; the available figures do not establish one universal value or explain the difference conclusively. Keep each figure tied to its source and date rather than combining them. BMW’s 2013 X5 release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was the 750d xDrive one of the original four?
No. BMW’s June 2012 7 Series specification, valid from July 2012, lists the 750d xDrive as a further application of the 280 kW/381 hp, 740 Nm diesel. It came after the four-car launch and should not be counted among that original group. BMW’s 7 Series specification sheet.
