A camouflaged next-generation BMW iX1 has been spotted testing in Spain, offering a first look at the electric SUV’s possible design direction. BMWBLOG’s August 7, 2026 report describes visible exterior details and anticipates Neue Klasse cabin and drivetrain features, but BMW has not confirmed the production design, specifications or launch schedule. The report is about the electric iX1—not the combustion X1, which is expected to receive a separate facelift.
What the spy photos show on the outside
BMWBLOG says the prototype was testing in Spain. Heavy camouflage hides much of its body surfacing, so the spy report offers clues rather than a reliable view of the final shape.
- Vertical kidney grille: The report identifies a vertically oriented grille as a visible feature.
- Electrically operated door handles: The prototype appears to use handles of this type, which BMWBLOG says have also been seen on earlier prototypes.
- Revised tailgate: The report notes that the license plate appears lower on the tailgate than on the current model.
BMWBLOG interprets a bulge on the tailgate as a possible indication of nearly full-width taillights. That is a design inference, not a confirmed description of the production lighting. The camouflaged surfaces also leave the SUV’s final proportions and detailing unsettled. BMWBLOG’s prototype report documents these observations.
What the report expects inside
BMWBLOG expects the iX1 to follow the Neue Klasse direction with iDrive X, a Panoramic Vision windshield projection and fewer physical controls. Those are expectations based on the Neue Klasse approach, not features confirmed in an iX1 cabin reveal. The report specifically says it is unclear whether the SUV will have a 17.9-inch center display.

BMW Group describes BMW Panoramic iDrive as one of the Neue Klasse technology themes, alongside Gen6 eDrive and the Heart of Joy. Its official overview says the iX3 was the first production Neue Klasse model, unveiled in September 2025, and that the i3 was due to follow in 2026. BMW also said Neue Klasse technologies would appear in 40 new models and updates by 2027. That portfolio plan does not establish which technologies or screens the iX1 will receive. How the next iX1 may differ from the X1
The name can be confusing: this spy story concerns the electric iX1 moving to a new generation, while the combustion X1 is reportedly due a separate facelift. BMWBLOG says the next iX1 will move away from the current electric model’s shared architecture and front-wheel-drive layout to a Neue Klasse platform that does not support front-wheel drive. The report expects rear-wheel drive in entry versions and dual-motor xDrive variants higher in the range. These are report claims, not published specifications for the next iX1.

The distinction matters because the current X1 family includes combustion, plug-in hybrid and electric models, but current-model details cannot establish what the next electric SUV will be. BMW Germany’s page describes the current U11 X1 range, while BMW’s 2022 launch announcement records the current generation’s introduction and production history; neither confirms the next iX1’s technical details or manufacturing arrangements.
What BMW has—and has not—confirmed about range and charging
BMW Group has published substantial range and charging figures for the Neue Klasse iX3, but those numbers should not be read as iX1 estimates. For the iX3 context, BMW cites 20% higher energy density for its cylindrical cells, range of up to 805 km (500 miles, WLTP), a maximum charging rate of 400 kW, and an additional 372 km (231 miles, WLTP) in 10 minutes under the stated conditions. These are BMW Group figures for the iX3, not confirmed next-iX1 performance. BMW Group’s iX3 announcement sets out those figures.

No BMW-confirmed next-iX1 battery capacity, range, charging rate, dimensions, price, market configuration or order date is established in the available reports. The current X1’s dimensions and luggage capacity are not substitutes: BMW Germany lists the current xDrive23i at 4,500 mm long, 1,845 mm wide and 1,642 mm high, with 500–1,545 L of luggage volume. Those figures apply to that current German-market model, not the spied next iX1. BMW Germany’s current X1 overview is for the U11 range.

BMWBLOG estimates a public debut around 2027 and first deliveries into 2028, while noting that BMW has not officially confirmed the timing. Treat those dates as the outlet’s estimate, not as a BMW launch announcement. BMW’s broader statement that Neue Klasse technologies would reach 40 new models and updates by 2027 is a portfolio target; it does not confirm an iX1 debut or delivery date.
