Yes—BMW built and operated a battery-electric car in 1972, nearly four decades before the production BMW i3 arrived. The car was the BMW 1602 Electric, one of two experimental conversions used by the organizing committee at the Munich Olympic Games. It was a working prototype and support vehicle, not an electric BMW sold to customers.
That distinction matters when the car is described as being “before Tesla.” The historical material establishes BMW’s 1972 prototype and the later 2013 i3, but it does not identify a specific Tesla launch as the comparison point. BMW’s achievement was an early demonstration of electric drive; it was not a production-market rival to Tesla.

What BMW actually built in 1972
BMW began researching electric drive with two test vehicles based on the 02-series BMW 1602. The company converted the cars for the 1972 Munich Olympics, where they served the organizing committee and worked as support and camera cars during long-distance events, including the marathon.

The Olympic assignment gave BMW a visible real-world test. Instead of remaining a laboratory demonstrator, the 1602 Electric had to move around crowded event routes and perform support duties repeatedly. Even so, BMW’s own technical description calls it a “first development attempt,” not a viable production solution.

BMW Group’s 2022 retrospective summarizes the historical starting point this way: “The visionary history of electric BMW vehicles begins with two cars at the 1972 Olympic Games.” That wording is important: the history begins with two cars, not a customer model or a retail launch.
BMW 1602 Electric specifications
The figures below come from BMW’s historical technical press material. They describe a 1972 prototype using period technology, not a result from a modern independent road test.
| Specification | BMW’s historical figure |
|---|---|
| Battery type | 12 lead-acid starter batteries supplied by Varta |
| Battery capacity | 12.6 kWh |
| Battery-pack weight | 350 kg |
| Motor | Bosch DC shunt-wound motor |
| Continuous motor output | 12 kW |
| Peak motor output | 32 kW |
| Top speed | 100 km/h (62 mph) |
| Acceleration | About 8 seconds from 0 to 50 km/h (31 mph) |
| Range in city driving | About 30 km (19 miles) |
The most revealing number is the battery mass. A 350 kg lead-acid pack carried only 12.6 kWh, so a large share of the vehicle’s energy budget was tied to moving the batteries themselves. That ratio helps explain why BMW treated the car as an experiment rather than a practical showroom product.
How far could the 1972 BMW electric car go?
BMW gives two range descriptions, and they refer to different conditions rather than necessarily contradicting each other. The detailed 2012 technical press kit lists about 30 km (19 miles) in city driving. The same material describes roughly twice that distance when traveling at a constant 50 km/h, while BMW’s 2022 retrospective rounds the car’s range to around 60 km (37 miles).

- Rounded historical description: around 60 km in BMW’s later retrospective.
These are manufacturer historical specifications. They should not be compared directly with a modern EV’s advertised range unless the driving cycle, speed, weather, vehicle mass, battery chemistry and test method are also matched. A 12.6 kWh lead-acid system in a 1972 conversion and a contemporary lithium-ion vehicle represent entirely different engineering constraints.
Why the 1602 Electric did not become a production car
Lead-acid batteries were too heavy for the usable energy
The 1602’s 350 kg battery pack supplied a short urban range and modest power. Lead-acid batteries were familiar and comparatively available, but their low energy density made them difficult to package into a useful passenger car. The result could perform an Olympic support role, yet it did not offer the range, weight efficiency or convenience BMW would have needed for ordinary customers.
It was a development vehicle, not a finished product program
The car was built to answer engineering questions: could an electric drivetrain move a BMW sedan, how would it behave in event service, and what components would future research require? BMW’s own language—“first development attempt”—sets the correct category. Calling it the company’s first electric BMW is accurate; calling it BMW’s first production EV is not.

Olympic support work provided a controlled public demonstration, but it did not create a retail network, a service plan or a customer charging ecosystem. The historical sources do not establish a production plan, sales price or customer deliveries for the 1602 Electric. Those omissions are consistent with its status as an engineering prototype.

BMW’s electric research after the Olympics
The 1602 was the beginning of a sequence of research projects rather than an isolated publicity exercise.
- 1972 — BMW 1602 Electric: Two converted 1602s supported the Munich Olympics. Their lead-acid packs and short city range exposed the limitations BMW needed to solve.
- 1975 — Experimental BMW LS: BMW continued electric-drive work with an experimental LS using lead-acid batteries.
- 1987–1990 — Eight converted 325iX test vehicles: BMW built a research fleet to evaluate sodium-sulfur batteries. BMW said this chemistry offered three times the energy density of conventional lead batteries.
- 1991 — BMW E1: The E1 debuted at the International Motor Show as an all-electric city-car concept for four people plus luggage.
- 2013 — BMW i3 production launch: BMW identified the i3 as its first production model in this electric-vehicle history, with production planned for Leipzig in late 2013.
The sodium-sulfur 325iX fleet remained experimental. It demonstrated BMW’s effort to improve energy density, but the vehicles were research cars rather than customer products. The E1 likewise marked a more advanced concept milestone without becoming the production model that eventually entered BMW’s lineup.
What made the BMW E1 a major step
The E1 showed how far BMW’s thinking had moved since the Olympic 1602. BMW described it as a purpose-focused electric city car able to carry four people and their luggage, with a stated range of up to 160 km in city traffic. That was a substantial improvement over the 1602’s approximately 30 km city figure.
The E1 still belongs in the prototype and concept category. It was not the customer production EV that later established BMW’s modern electric range. Its significance is developmental: BMW was no longer simply converting an existing sedan for a special event; it was exploring what an electric vehicle designed around urban use could be.

Why the i3 is the correct production milestone
BMW’s historical account places the i3 in a different category from the 1602, LS, 325iX fleet and E1. The i3 was the first production model in this sequence, with BMW announcing production in Leipzig for late 2013.
That nearly 41-year gap—from the 1972 Olympic prototypes to the 2013 production launch—explains why the “nearly 40 years” wording is useful when discussing BMW’s own electric-car timeline. It describes the distance between an early working prototype and a mass-produced BMW model, not a continuous run of customer EVs.

If “before Tesla” means a precise corporate launch comparison
The available historical material does not define which Tesla launch or milestone the headline is using. It is therefore safer to say that BMW demonstrated electric drive decades before the modern Tesla era, while making clear that the 1972 1602 was not a direct production competitor.
How the 1602 compares with BMW’s later electric projects
| Project | Year | Status | Battery or technology focus | Intended role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1602 Electric | 1972 | Experimental prototype | Lead-acid batteries; 12.6 kWh pack | Olympic support and camera duties |
| Experimental BMW LS | 1975 | Research vehicle | Lead-acid batteries | Continued electric-drive development |
| Converted 325iX fleet | 1987–1990 | Eight test vehicles | Sodium-sulfur batteries, described by BMW as having three times the energy density of conventional lead batteries | Battery technology evaluation |
| BMW E1 | 1991 | Electric city-car concept | Purpose-designed electric vehicle research | Four occupants plus luggage; urban mobility study |
| BMW i3 | 2013 | Production model | BMW’s first production model in this electric-vehicle history | Customer vehicle, produced in Leipzig |
This is a progression of research stages, not a lineup of competing consumer cars. The projects used different battery chemistries, vehicle designs and goals, so their range figures should not be treated as a standardized laboratory comparison.
What the 1972 car tells us about EV development
Battery chemistry determines the vehicle’s usefulness
The 1602’s short city range was not simply a motor problem. Its 12 kWh-class battery system had to deliver motion while carrying 350 kg of batteries. BMW’s later work on sodium-sulfur cells shows that energy density was a central research priority long before lithium-ion packs became dominant in modern EVs.

The Olympic cars proved that an electric BMW could perform a defined job. Commercial success would have required a much broader set of answers: acceptable range for normal buyers, manageable weight, dependable production, service support and a product economics case. The 1602 answered the first question, not all of the others.
Long development gaps do not erase continuity
BMW’s electric work moved through several pauses, experiments and concepts before reaching the i3. A prototype from 1972 should not be presented as if it directly became the i3, but it is reasonable to view it as the first documented step in the company’s modern electric-vehicle lineage.
Bottom line for the “before Tesla” claim
BMW really did build an electric vehicle nearly 40 years before its first production EV: two 1602 Electric prototypes operated at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Their specifications—12.6 kWh, a 350 kg lead-acid pack, about 30 km of city range and a 100 km/h top speed—show both the achievement and the limitations of the era.
The precise claim is therefore: BMW built an early electric prototype before the modern Tesla era, but it did not sell a production electric car in 1972. The 1602 led to further research vehicles, the 1991 E1 concept and, decades later, the production i3.
