How reliable is a BMW Z4?
A well-maintained Z4 can be dependable, but it is a low-volume performance convertible with expensive systems and BMW labor rates. Reliability is not a single score for the whole nameplate. The car’s generation, engine, transmission, mileage, climate, storage and service records change the risk substantially.

Common problems on older E85 and E86 Z4s
On an older car, age can matter as much as mileage. A Z4 that spent years outside, sat unused or lived in a wet or salty climate may have more work ahead than a higher-mile example stored properly and serviced on schedule.

Roof, drains and water ingress
Operate the convertible roof repeatedly from fully closed to fully open. Listen for a pump or motor that becomes unusually loud, pauses, strains or changes speed. Check the roof seals, drain paths and the trunk or storage areas for dampness, staining or a musty smell. Water intrusion can damage nearby trim, wiring and control modules, so a dry cabin is a meaningful part of the inspection rather than a cosmetic bonus.
Cooling system and oil leaks
Inspect the radiator-area components, belts, hoses and expansion-tank area for cracking, swelling, seepage or improvised repairs. Look around the engine and beneath the car for fresh or baked-on oil residue. A professional inspection should distinguish an old stain from an active leak and should record any cooling-system pressure or temperature concern.
Suspension, bearings and structural areas
Check dampers for leakage, suspension bushes for splitting, wheel bearings for play or growling and the tires for uneven wear. Inspect subframe and mounting areas for corrosion or damage, especially on cars used in harsh winter climates. A steering wheel that sits off-center, a car that pulls or a vibration under braking can point to alignment, worn components or prior impact.
Electrical equipment and warning lights
Confirm that every warning light illuminates during the startup self-test and then goes out as expected. Test windows, mirrors, locks, lights, climate controls, audio equipment and roof controls. Have a technician scan for stored faults even if the dashboard looks normal; intermittent electrical problems may not trigger a permanent warning.

Common problems on the 2009–2016 E89
The E89’s retractable hardtop brings a more complicated roof system than a conventional fabric top. Its condition should be treated as a core mechanical check, not a quick demonstration for a potential buyer.
Folding-hardtop mechanism and trunk area
Run a complete roof cycle several times with the car level. Watch for hesitation, failure to latch, warning messages, hydraulic noise or a cycle that works only after the car has warmed up. Inspect seals, drains, hinges and the trunk-area storage compartment for moisture. Ask whether roof components have been repaired and request invoices rather than relying on a seller’s verbal assurance.
Engine running and injector symptoms
Auto Express specifically advises checking E89 cars for injector-related symptoms, uneven running and engine cut-out behavior. Start the engine cold if possible, let it idle and then drive through gentle and stronger acceleration. Hesitation, misfiring, a sudden loss of power or an engine that cuts out warrants a diagnostic scan before purchase. Do not assume a warning-light reset means the underlying problem is fixed.

Look for steering pull, clunks over uneven roads, brake-pedal vibration, uneven tire wear and oil leaks. Review the condition-based service record and compare mileage on invoices with the odometer. Check recall completion and ask the servicing dealer to identify any open campaign by VIN.

What to know about 2019-date G29 reliability
The G29 is newer, but newer does not eliminate inspection risk. Its electronic systems, driver-assistance features, powered roof and modern drivetrain require a scan, a careful road test and current records.
Check recalls by VIN before you buy
On September 26, 2025, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that certain 2019–2022 Z4s were included in a recall involving an engine-starter relay. The relay can overheat, short-circuit and cause a fire. NHTSA advised affected owners to park outside and away from buildings and other vehicles until they confirm that the vehicle is not subject to the recall or has been remedied. Recall applicability is VIN-specific and can change, so check the live NHTSA lookup and BMW’s recall service before money changes hands.
BMW states that a BMW partner performs recall or technical-update work free of charge. Confirm that the repair is recorded as completed, not merely scheduled. Also ask about other campaigns, including fuel-tank recalls where applicable.
Roof, body and electronics
Cycle the roof repeatedly and inspect its seals, storage area and surrounding trim for water. Check paint and panel alignment in daylight for evidence of repairs, and inspect the underside for impact damage. Test the infotainment system, cameras, sensors and driver-assistance functions. Warning messages that appear only intermittently should be diagnosed before purchase, because an apparently minor sensor fault can disable several related systems.

Service records and condition-based intervals
Auto Express reports that G29 servicing can be condition-based, with up to two years or 20,000 miles between services. Those are maximum examples, not a reason to ignore time, usage or the car’s service indicator. A 2024 Auto Express UK guide gave example prices of £230 for oil and filter service and £422 when spark plugs and the air filter were included. Verify the actual work, date and mileage in BMW records and retain itemized invoices.

Obtain a written estimate from a BMW specialist before authorizing work. Ask the estimate to separate diagnosis, labor, parts, fluids, taxes and any follow-up calibration. A cheap initial quote can become expensive if a roof, electrical or emissions fault requires additional testing.

- Record the exact identity. Note the VIN, model year, generation, engine, transmission, mileage and market. Reliability evidence cannot be applied accurately without those details.
- Run the VIN through recall databases. Check NHTSA and BMW records for open campaigns, including the starter-relay issue affecting certain 2019–2022 cars and fuel-tank campaigns where applicable. Require proof of completion or price the car as unresolved until a BMW partner confirms the remedy.
- Review service evidence. Look for dated invoices, BMW digital records and evidence of oil, filters, spark plugs, cooling-system work and brake or suspension replacement. Match mileage across documents. A higher-mile car with preventive work can be a better buy than a low-mile car with no records.
- Inspect the roof cold and hot. Operate it repeatedly, listen for abnormal pump or motor noise, watch for hesitation and inspect seals, drains and storage areas for dampness. Do not accept a demonstration in which the seller operates it only once.
- Check the body and underside. Look for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, corrosion, jacking damage, fluid leaks and underbody impact. Inspect tires for brand, age and even wear; tire condition can reveal alignment or suspension problems.
- Perform a cold start and road test. Confirm that warning lights clear, the engine idles evenly and the transmission engages without abnormal delay or impact. On an E89, pay particular attention to injector-related hesitation, uneven running and engine cut-out behavior.
- Test every electrical function. Operate windows, locks, lights, climate control, infotainment, parking sensors, cameras and driver-assistance features. Confirm that no warning appears after driving.
- Pay for an independent inspection and scan. Have a BMW specialist scan stored faults, inspect suspension and brakes, check fluid levels and leaks, measure battery voltage and verify tire pressures. BMW inspection documentation specifically includes checks for recalls, tire pressure, battery voltage, warning lights and fluid levels.
- Get a written repair estimate. Use the inspection findings to obtain prices before negotiating. Include immediate safety work and likely near-term maintenance, not only the fault that prevents a sale today.
How to choose between two Z4 examples
Compare cars on the same evidence rather than on mileage alone. Score each vehicle on the following axes and investigate any category that cannot be documented.

When two cars are close in price, favor the one with complete records, a dry and correctly operating roof, closed recalls and a clean diagnostic scan. A lower odometer reading cannot compensate for unknown storage damage, neglected fluids or unresolved electrical faults.
When should you walk away?
- The seller will not provide the VIN or allow a recall check.
- The roof is not demonstrated through a full cycle, or the cabin and trunk show unexplained dampness.
- Warning lights remain on, disappear only after a reset or return during the road test.
- An E89 hesitates, runs unevenly or cuts out, and the seller refuses a diagnostic scan.
- Service history is missing and the car needs simultaneous tires, brakes, suspension and leak repairs.
- There is evidence of structural damage, serious corrosion or underbody impact that an inspector cannot confidently price.
A Z4 can be a sensible purchase when its generation-specific risks are known, its maintenance is documented and the roof, engine, chassis and electronics pass an independent inspection. The safest decision is the car with the clearest evidence and the lowest unresolved repair exposure, not necessarily the newest or lowest-mile example.
