Choose the sDrive30i if you want the least expensive way into a compact, rear-wheel-drive BMW roadster and are satisfied with a turbocharged four-cylinder and automatic transmission. Choose the M40i if you want the Z4’s 3.0-liter inline-six, 382 hp, 369 lb-ft of torque and standard M chassis equipment. For 2025 and later buyers who consider shifting part of the reason to own a roadster, the M40i is the only US version offered with a six-speed manual.
The current US range is organized around those two trims. The practical decision is not simply “which is faster?” It is whether you value lower entry cost and easier commuting, or the inline-six character, stronger passing performance and available manual gearbox enough to pay the premium. This guide compares the engines, transmissions, equipment, running considerations and time-sensitive editions so you can order or locate the right Z4.

BMW Z4 lineup at a glance
BMW’s 2026 warranty documentation lists the sDrive30i and M40i as current US Z4 roadster models. Both are two-seat convertibles with a front engine, rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic as the normal transmission configuration. The M40i gained an additional six-speed manual option for the 2025 model year; BMW’s US materials continue to show the sDrive30i as automatic-only.
| Trim | Engine | Output | Transmission choices | 2025 base MSRP | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| sDrive30i | 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-four | Output figure not stated in BMW and pricing materials | Eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic | $55,675 (Kelley Blue Book, 2025) | Lower-cost roadster ownership, commuting and touring with automatic convenience |
| M40i | 2,998 cc (3.0-liter) TwinPower Turbo inline-six | 382 hp; 369 lb-ft | Eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual (manual introduced for 2025) | $68,175 (Kelley Blue Book, 2025) | Maximum performance, inline-six character and buyers who want a manual |
The $12,500 difference between the listed 2025 base MSRPs is before destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer-installed equipment and options. Actual transaction prices and inventory can differ by model year and market, so use these figures as a historical comparison rather than a current quote.

Which Z4 engine should you choose?
sDrive30i: the rational entry point
The sDrive30i uses BMW’s 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-four. It delivers the Z4’s core formula—small dimensions, two seats, a powered soft top and rear-wheel drive—without the M40i’s price premium. Its automatic transmission makes it the easier choice for stop-and-go traffic, daily commuting and drivers who want the car to manage gear changes.
Choose the sDrive30i when your priorities are purchase cost, a lighter-feeling roadster format and enough performance for normal roads rather than maximum acceleration. Car and Driver’s 2025 EPA figures are supplied only for this trim: 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. Those are EPA estimates reported by Car and Driver, not a guarantee of the mileage your driving, weather, tires and traffic will produce.
M40i: the performance and character upgrade
The M40i replaces the four-cylinder with a 2,998 cc (3.0-liter) TwinPower Turbo inline-six. BMW Group PressClub USA lists 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, with rear-wheel drive and two seats. The extra cylinders and torque provide the stronger passing reserve and more distinctive engine character most enthusiasts are seeking from a Z4.
The M40i is the logical choice if you regularly drive on fast back roads, value effortless acceleration or intend to keep the car as a weekend sports car rather than simply a stylish commuter. It also unlocks the six-speed manual option. If those benefits do not matter to you, the sDrive30i leaves more of the budget available for insurance, tires, fuel and other ownership costs.

Is the sDrive30i fast enough?
There is no single answer because “fast enough” depends on how and where you drive. The sDrive30i has the Z4’s low seating position, rear-drive balance and turbocharged response, so it can provide the roadster experience without requiring the M40i’s six-cylinder output. For urban driving, highway merging and ordinary two-lane roads, its performance is generally the more economical way to enjoy the chassis.
The M40i’s 382 hp and 369 lb-ft are most noticeable when you accelerate from a higher speed, climb grades with passengers and luggage, or want repeated strong passes without planning as far ahead. Neither BMW nor the available references provide a complete, directly comparable acceleration table here, so do not treat an unspecified 0–60 time as part of this comparison. Drive both versions on the same route and judge throttle response, engine sound and how often you would use the additional reserve.
Automatic or six-speed manual?
What the manual includes
For 2025, BMW introduced a six-speed manual specifically for the M40i. BMW’s launch description calls it a driver-focused package rather than a transmission-only substitution. The package includes the six-speed gearbox, selected Vernasca leather choices, special paint availability, staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels and tires, Extended Shadowline exterior trim and unique chassis tuning.
Car and Driver lists the Handschalter package at $3,500 for the model year it reviewed. Because equipment bundles and inventory can change, confirm the build sheet and vehicle identification number with the dealer; a manual-looking advertisement is not enough evidence that the car has the package.

When the automatic is the better tool
- Choose the eight-speed automatic if you spend significant time in congestion or want effortless, consistent shifts on long trips.
- The automatic is also the safer choice when several drivers will share the car and not everyone wants a clutch pedal.
- It can make the Z4 easier to live with as a daily vehicle, especially where traffic and steep grades are common.
When the manual is worth paying for
- Select the Handschalter M40i when the physical act of selecting gears is a primary reason you are buying a two-seat roadster.
- The manual is most defensible for weekend drives, scenic routes and owners who would regret choosing the easier transmission every time they drive.
- Do not buy it solely as an assumed resale strategy. Availability, buyer demand and future values are uncertain; buy it because you want to use it.
What does the M40i premium buy?
Kelley Blue Book listed the 2025 base MSRP at $55,675 for the sDrive30i and $68,175 for the M40i, a $12,500 gap before other charges. The M40i’s premium pays for more than a larger engine: it is the trim BMW positions around stronger performance and M-specific hardware, and it is the only route to a manual transmission.
Compare actual cars line by line. An M40i with expensive paint, wheels and driver aids can cost substantially more than its base price, while an sDrive30i with desirable convenience equipment can narrow the equipment gap. Options worth considering
| Option or package | What the listed equipment includes | Who should consider it | Points to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium package | Convenience equipment such as parking assistance, head-up display and ambient lighting (bundle varies by model year) | Drivers who value easier parking and a more feature-rich cabin | BMW’s exact model-year contents; Car and Driver lists $1,250 for its reviewed year |
| Driving Assistance package | Lane-departure warning, active blind-spot detection and active driving assistance as listed by Car and Driver | Frequent highway users who want additional driver-support features | System limits, local availability and the exact included functions; listed at $700 by Car and Driver for its reviewed year |
| Harman/Kardon audio | Upgraded sound system | Owners who tour with the roof closed or spend long periods in the car | Whether it is bundled or standalone; Car and Driver lists $875 for its reviewed year |
| Shadowline trim | Dark exterior trim treatment | Buyers who prefer a less chrome-heavy appearance | Whether it is already included with the manual package; Car and Driver lists $550 when separately optioned |
| Wireless charging | Wireless phone-charging feature | Drivers who use compatible phones and want a cable-free console | Phone fit, heat management and model-year availability; Car and Driver lists $200 for its reviewed year |
| Manual-package wheels and tires | 19-inch front and 20-inch rear staggered fitment | Drivers prioritizing appearance and the manual package’s chassis specification | Replacement cost, road damage exposure and winter-tire compatibility |
Premium package
Prioritize Premium if parking assistance, a head-up display and ambient lighting would materially improve your daily use. BMW changes package contents over time, so read the current window sticker rather than assuming a previous year’s bundle is unchanged.

The package includes lane-departure warning, active blind-spot detection and active driving assistance. These are support systems, not autonomous driving. Test their alerts and steering behavior, and make sure the functions you want are present on the specific car.

Audio and phone equipment
Harman/Kardon is a comfort upgrade rather than a performance item. It makes the most sense if you often drive with the roof raised, when wind and road noise are lower. Wireless charging is similarly convenience-focused; verify that your phone fits the charging tray and that the vehicle has the feature rather than relying on a generic listing.
Wheels, tires, paint and upholstery
The manual package’s staggered 19/20-inch setup looks aggressive but can increase replacement-tire expense and vulnerability to potholes. Ask the dealer whether approved winter tires are available in your region and whether a square setup is permitted for the exact car. BMW’s manual-package release lists Vernasca leather choices, special paint availability and seven metallic colors in addition to Alpine White. Color and upholstery combinations can be restricted by trim and production date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Practicality: what can a Z4 actually carry?
This is a two-seat roadster, not a four-season cargo substitute. BMW lists 9.9 cubic feet of luggage capacity for the manual M40i and a 97.2-inch wheelbase. That is enough for carefully selected luggage for a weekend, but the opening, shape and roof mechanism matter as much as the published volume.

How to test luggage space
- Bring the bags, camera cases or small travel cases you actually use.
- Place them in the trunk with the roof both raised and lowered, following the car’s roof-operation instructions.
- Check whether the remaining space allows the soft items you would carry on a trip; there are only two seats and no rear cargo area.
- Confirm that the trunk can be opened and closed without forcing the roof partition or contacting luggage.
Seat comfort, wind noise, roof operation and visibility should be assessed during a drive of at least the length of your normal commute. A roadster that is enjoyable for an hour may not suit you for a full-day tour if the seating position or storage is wrong.

Fuel, tires and other running costs
Car and Driver’s 2025 EPA estimates for the sDrive30i—25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway—are the only mileage figures supplied for this comparison. No equivalent M40i figure is established here, so do not assume the six-cylinder will match the four-cylinder’s estimates. Your fuel cost also depends on annual mileage, fuel prices, traffic and driving style.
- Budget for performance tires, especially with the manual package’s staggered 19/20-inch wheels.
- Obtain insurance quotes for both trims before deciding; engine output, vehicle value, driver profile and location affect premiums.
- Ask local dealers about service capacity, tire sourcing and parts lead times for the exact trim.
- If you live where snow and road salt are common, price a compliant winter-tire solution before choosing the largest wheel package.
BMW Z4 Final Edition: verify before you buy
BMW USA describes the Z4 Final Edition as the model’s “final rollout,” with a 3.0-liter inline-six and a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The same announcement says Premium, Driving Assistant and Harman Kardon systems are standard on that edition.
That language makes the Final Edition highly time-sensitive. Availability, pricing, allocation and regional equipment can change quickly, and a vehicle advertised as a remaining Z4 may be a different model year or trim. Ask BMW or an authorized dealer for the current production status, build sheet, warranty start date, standard-equipment list and any market-specific restrictions before placing a deposit.

- Set your use case. Decide whether the Z4 is a daily commuter, a weekend sports car or a touring car. This determines whether automatic convenience, manual involvement, luggage space or driver-assistance features matter most.
- Drive both engines. Drive an sDrive30i and an M40i on the same roads. Pay attention to low-speed smoothness, passing response, engine sound, ride firmness and how easily you can place the car on narrow roads.
- Choose the transmission deliberately. If you want a manual, search specifically for an M40i with the Handschalter package and verify the clutch, gearbox and included equipment on the window sticker.
- Build a line-item price. Start with the applicable model-year MSRP, then add destination, taxes, registration, options, accessories and fees. Do not use the historical 2025 figures as a 2026 quote.
- Check the options against your route. Confirm Premium, Driving Assistance, audio, charging, wheel and tire specifications, paint and upholstery on the exact vehicle.
- Test practicality. Load your luggage, operate the roof, check seating comfort and inspect visibility with the top up and down.
- Price ownership. Get insurance, tire and winter-wheel quotes and ask about dealer service support before signing.
- Confirm availability and warranty. Verify model year, production date, remaining warranty, open recalls and delivery timing in writing.
Which Z4 should you buy?
Buy the sDrive30i if:
- You want the lowest listed entry price into the current US Z4 range.
- You prefer an automatic for commuting and traffic.
- You value the roadster’s size and layout more than maximum engine output.
- The 2.0-liter turbo-four provides all the performance you need on your normal roads.
Buy the M40i automatic if:
- You want BMW’s 2,998 cc inline-six with 382 hp and 369 lb-ft.
- Strong passing power and M-oriented hardware justify the added purchase cost.
- You want the performance trim but do not want clutch-pedal work in traffic.
Buy the M40i manual if:
- Shifting gears yourself is central to the ownership experience.
- You accept the $3,500 Handschalter price listed by Car and Driver for its reviewed model year, plus the package’s larger staggered wheels and related tire costs.
- You have located a specific, verified car rather than assuming every M40i has the manual equipment.
The right Z4 is therefore a use-case decision: sDrive30i for value and ease, M40i automatic for effortless six-cylinder performance, and M40i Handschalter for deliberate driver involvement. Match the trim to the roads, traffic and luggage you actually use, then verify every time-sensitive detail on the individual vehicle.
