Verdict: The 2026 BMW X1 Long Wheelbase is worth shortlisting if your priority is a genuinely roomy, easy-to-access rear seat in a premium petrol SUV. Its 2,800 mm wheelbase, reclining rear backrest and extra cushioning make it a stronger chauffeur-driven proposition than the regular X1. The trade-off is a merely adequate 156 hp front-wheel-drive powertrain, missing front-seat luxuries such as ventilation and massage, and no adaptive cruise control or all-wheel drive.
BMW launched the India-built petrol X1 LWB on 21 August 2026. The following assessment separates BMW’s specifications and offers from observations recorded by Autocar India and NDTV Auto, because this is a buying guide rather than a first-hand test.

What the BMW X1 LWB is, and who it is for
The X1 LWB is the long-wheelbase version of BMW’s compact luxury SUV developed for India. BMW lists one India-market variant, the front-wheel-drive sDrive18Li. The defining change is not a new engine or a performance upgrade; it is the stretched body and a rear cabin configured around passenger comfort.
That makes the LWB a particularly relevant choice for owners who regularly carry adults in the second row, use a driver, or want easier rear-seat access for older family members. It is less obvious as a choice for an enthusiast who values rapid overtaking, a richer front-seat specification or all-weather traction. Autocar’s reviewer found the engine adequate in town but unexciting when pushed, while praising the steering’s connection and directional crispness.

BMW Group India President and CEO Hardeep Singh Brar positioned the car as a vehicle that avoids choosing between luxury, technology and performance. That is BMW’s launch positioning, not an independent verdict; the equipment and performance evidence below shows where the car does and does not deliver on those aims.

BMW’s launch release gives an introductory ex-showroom price of ₹49,90,000 for the petrol X1 LWB. The invoiced price excludes road tax, TCS, RTO statutory taxes and fees, local levies and insurance, so the amount payable at a dealership will be higher and will vary by state and insurer.

BMW describes the LWB as the longest vehicle in its segment. That is the manufacturer’s claim, rather than an independently validated market ranking. Autocar calculates 116 mm more overall length and 108 mm more wheelbase than the regular X1. NDTV Auto reports 109 mm of additional rear knee room. These numbers refer to different measurements and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Legroom, cushion and access
Rear space is the LWB’s central reason for existing. Autocar’s reviewer found the back seat exceptionally roomy, including for passengers around six feet tall. The rear bench uses enhanced cushioning, a seat base that is 15 mm longer and increased thigh support. Its backrest reclines by a few degrees, allowing passengers to settle into a more relaxed posture on longer journeys.
The wide-opening rear doors are a practical advantage rather than a brochure statistic. They make it easier to enter without ducking deeply into the cabin and help when fitting a child seat or assisting an older passenger. BMW also lists rear air-conditioning vents, a rear armrest and USB-C charging, all useful for regular rear-seat occupants.

What the rear cabin does not have
Large rear windows help visibility and make the cabin feel open, but the X1 LWB has no adjustable rear sunshades. The panoramic glass roof adds light yet does not open. If passengers expect a limousine-style rear compartment with powered shade controls or a separate entertainment system, this remains a compact SUV rather than a chauffeur limousine.
Boot and everyday carrying
BMW claims 540 litres of luggage volume with the rear seats in use and 1,700 litres when the 40:20:40 split-fold rear seatbacks are folded. The split allows a long item to pass through while retaining seating positions on either side. Actual loading convenience will depend on the shape of your luggage and the height of the boot floor, so inspect those details with your own bags before ordering.

BMW’s product information lists a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch central touchscreen running BMW Operating System 9. BMW Digital Key Plus, wireless phone charging and Adaptive LED headlights are also listed. The digital key can be shared with up to 18 people according to BMW, a potentially useful feature for family members or a regular driver; confirm phone compatibility and the exact activation process with the dealer.
Parking equipment is a strength on paper. BMW lists Parking Assistant Plus with a 360-degree view and a reversing assistant. The stated driver-assistance functions include lane-departure warning, blind-spot detection and rear-collision warning. These are feature claims for the listed configuration, not a guarantee that every software function behaves identically in every traffic or weather condition. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the systems and explain their operating limits.
Front-seat omissions buyers should notice
Autocar reports that the electrically adjustable front seats do not include ventilation or massage. The steering wheel has no paddle shifters, and adaptive cruise control is absent. Those omissions matter because the LWB’s price places it among SUVs where buyers may expect a broader comfort specification. The rear bench is the clear equipment and comfort priority; the front seats are not the most lavish in the class.

Engine, gearbox and driving character
What the 156 hp petrol engine feels like
The 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol produces 156 hp and 230 Nm, driving the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Autocar’s reviewer describes the output as adequate for urban driving. Under harder acceleration, the review notes a delay when attempting an overtake and a three-cylinder thrum under load. That description suggests a powertrain tuned more for smooth daily progress than urgent responses on an open highway.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Autocar recorded 0–100 km/h in 9.58 seconds. This is the reviewer’s measured figure under that test’s conditions, not a universal result for every road, temperature, fuel or vehicle load. It places the X1 LWB in the usable rather than overtly sporty category.
Steering, handling and the front-wheel-drive layout
The LWB remains front-wheel drive. Autocar praises the steering connection and the car’s directional crispness, but concludes that it is not the X1 for keen drivers. A buyer who enjoys quick corner exits, frequent high-speed overtakes or the added traction of all-wheel drive should drive the LWB alongside alternatives before deciding.
BMW says the suspension is specifically tuned for the long-wheelbase model and describes the setup as comfort-oriented. Autocar likewise reports suspension changes aimed at improving comfort. Treat that as a review impression to verify on a local drive over the roads you actually use: broken urban surfaces, speed humps and highway expansion joints can reveal differences that a smooth launch route will not.
Fuel economy: what is known and what is not
Autocar lists an ARAI mileage figure of 15.5 km/l for the X1 LWB. Its review did not conduct a full fuel-economy test and presents real-world economy as an expectation rather than a measured result. Therefore, 15.5 km/l should be read as the official published figure, not a promise of what you will obtain in congested city traffic, with a full passenger load or at highway speeds.

BMW X1 LWB versus the regular-wheelbase X1
BMW says the standard model will continue in India. Autocar’s model overview cites the LWB launch price as ₹1 lakh below the cited ex-showroom price of the standard-wheelbase petrol X1. Both prices and equipment can change, so request written, current quotations for the same date and state before treating that gap as a permanent advantage.
| Decision point | Why the X1 LWB makes sense | When the regular X1 may suit better |
|---|---|---|
| Rear passengers | Longer wheelbase, more reported knee room, longer cushion and reclining backrest | Rear-seat stretch is not a priority |
| Parking and urban use | Still a compact SUV, with the same basic front-drive concept | A shorter body may be easier in a tight parking space |
| Price | Autocar cites a ₹1 lakh lower launch ex-showroom price than the standard petrol X1 | Current dealer pricing, discounts or equipment may change the comparison |
| Driving priorities | Comfort-oriented suspension tuning is the emphasis | Choose after comparing the two on your usual roads and with your usual passengers |
How it compares with compact luxury SUV alternatives
Autocar identifies the Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3 as alternatives. The available evidence does not provide a like-for-like drive, measured rear-seat comparison, equipment audit or city-specific on-road quote for those models, so it would be inaccurate to declare one a definitive winner.

Is the X1 LWB suitable for chauffeur-driven use?
Yes, provided your expectations are centred on rear passenger room rather than a luxury-sedan level of isolation. The extra wheelbase, long seat base, additional thigh support, reclining backrest, wide-opening doors, rear vents, armrest and USB-C charging all address the needs of a regular rear passenger. The large windows also help the cabin feel less enclosed.

Before signing, spend time in the rear seat with the front seat set for your driver. Check whether the fixed panoramic roof gives enough headroom for the tallest passenger, whether the missing sunshades are acceptable in your climate and whether the boot accommodates the luggage you carry. The LWB’s front-wheel-drive layout and modest engine output are not barriers to chauffeur use, but they may matter if the car will frequently travel fully loaded on fast highways.
Price, finance and ownership cover
BMW’s launch communication advertises a starting monthly instalment of ₹44,444 and a 60% assured buyback value after four years. These are offer terms, not universal ownership costs: eligibility, down payment, tenure, interest rate, mileage, condition and dealer participation can affect the outcome. Ask BMW or the retailer to provide the complete repayment schedule and buyback conditions in writing.
The launch release includes a two-year unlimited-kilometre warranty and two years of 24/7 roadside assistance. BMW also offers service-plan and extended-warranty options. Confirm what each plan covers, the renewal price, exclusions, transfer rules and the servicing schedule for your intended annual mileage. The ex-showroom price does not include statutory taxes, local levies, TCS, registration, road tax or insurance, so these should be itemised in the final quotation.

What to check on the test drive and at delivery
- Measure your space: Set the driver’s seat for the tallest regular driver, then sit behind it and check knee, thigh and head support.
- Try access: Open the rear doors fully, step in and out several times, and test the process with any child seat or mobility aid you use.
- Drive the powertrain: Include a traffic crawl, a brisk merge and an overtake to assess the dual-clutch transmission and the reviewer-noted response delay.
- Evaluate the ride: Drive over potholes, speed humps and uneven patches on roads familiar to you rather than relying only on a smooth showroom route.
- Use the technology: Test the 360-degree camera, reversing assistant, phone charging, Digital Key setup and driver-alert functions with the salesperson.
- Audit the specification: Confirm the exact vehicle has the promised displays, lighting, rear vents, USB-C ports and safety equipment; trim sheets can change.
- Review the contract: Separate ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, taxes, finance charges, service plans, warranty extensions and any buyback conditions.
BMW X1 LWB review verdict
The X1 LWB’s strongest argument is simple: it gives the compact BMW SUV a rear seat that can accommodate adults comfortably and makes daily chauffeur use more practical. The 540-litre boot, contemporary displays, parking-camera system and listed safety assistance add useful everyday substance.
Its compromises are equally clear. The 156 hp three-cylinder engine is described by Autocar as adequate rather than exciting, the front seats lack ventilation and massage, adaptive cruise control is absent, the panoramic roof is fixed, and the car drives only its front wheels. The 15.5 km/l ARAI figure is not an independently measured real-world result.
Choose the X1 LWB after a proper local test drive if rear-seat comfort is your first requirement and you are satisfied with front-wheel-drive performance. Compare the regular X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3 if you value sharper acceleration, richer front-seat equipment, all-wheel drive or a different drivetrain. There is no long-term reliability or owner-survey evidence here, so those questions require a separate ownership check with local customers and the dealer.
