The car behind the “$5,000 electric car” headline is the Wuling Hongguang MINI EV, a tiny, low-cost electric car from SAIC-GM-Wuling. It did outsell Tesla’s Model 3 in China during reported periods in 2020 and 2021—but that is a historical claim, not evidence that it is outselling the Model 3 today. Its familiar dollar price also refers to an early conversion, not the current listed price in China.
What is the $5,000 electric car?
It is the Wuling Hongguang MINI EV, a compact, four-seat electric car developed by SAIC-GM-Wuling. WIRED described the vehicle as made in partnership with General Motors. Its small footprint and low launch-era price helped make it a high-volume urban car in China, rather than a direct equivalent to a larger electric sedan.
The $5,000 label comes from early coverage, not a stable global price. Bloomberg, in a report republished by The National in 2020, reported launch-era prices of 28,800–38,800 yuan and converted the entry price to about $4,230 at the time. A 2021 report cited 28,880 yuan for the entry version and described an option around $5,000. Those are dated China-market figures; currency conversion, trim, and time all matter.
Did the MINI EV outsell the Model 3?
Yes, in specific reported periods in China—not as a current, worldwide ranking. A September 2020 report said the MINI EV outsold Tesla in China in August. The National’s account of Bloomberg reporting also said more than 30,000 MINI EVs sold in its first 50 days. In February 2021, Tom’s Guide reported that the MINI EV was outselling the Model 3 in China by nearly two to one.

Those stories document past sales and a particular market. They do not establish the MINI EV’s present sales position. The available evidence does not provide a current primary sales dataset for a fresh comparison, so claims that it is “already outselling” the Model 3 should be read as historical headline framing.
What does the current MINI EV cost, and how far does it go?
SAIC-GM-Wuling’s official pages show that price and range depend on generation and trim. The manufacturer lists the following figures for China-market versions; range is stated on the CLTC cycle, not established here as real-world driving range.

The fifth-generation page lists four trims: two with 205 km of CLTC range at 44,800 and 49,800 yuan, and two with 301 km at 49,800 and 54,800 yuan. It also lists a four-door, four-seat layout. The third-generation page’s lower range figures show why a model name alone is not enough to identify a MINI EV’s specifications. The manufacturer notes that actual vehicles and configurations may differ.
Is it comparable to a Tesla Model 3?
Only in the limited sense that both are electric cars and have appeared in China-market sales comparisons. Their price, size, performance, range, and intended use put them in different categories. The MINI EV has been described as a short-distance urban commuter; the Model 3 is a larger car with substantially greater range and speed in the historical reporting.

For context, the 2021 Tom’s Guide comparison quoted a China Model 3 price of 249,900 yuan and a range of 263 miles. Those are dated secondary-report figures for that comparison, not current Model 3 specifications. They also should not be directly set against today’s MINI EV prices and CLTC range: the dates and range bases differ.
The practical comparison is therefore not “which car is better?” but “which job is each car built to do?” The MINI EV’s value proposition is a low-cost, compact car for shorter urban trips. A buyer considering longer journeys, higher speeds, or a different passenger and cargo requirement should not infer Model 3-like capability from the sales headline.

Can you buy one outside China?
Availability depends on the country, version, and local approval—not simply on whether a newer model has been reported there. WIRED’s review described its Macaron version as unavailable outside China at the time of publication; that statement is historical. A T3 report from April 2026 discusses a newer version and UK pricing below £5,000, but that report alone does not establish that a specific buyer can order, register, or receive the car in the UK or another market.
Before treating a quoted overseas price as a purchase price, check whether the exact trim is available through an authorized seller, whether it is approved for local registration, and what taxes, delivery, and other charges apply. The sources cited here do not establish current retail availability or a delivered price outside China.

Why did the tiny EV sell so well?
The early sales story reflects a product aimed at buyers who wanted basic, affordable urban mobility. Yale Zhang, founder of AutoForesight, told Bloomberg in 2020: “A lot of consumers don’t need anything fancy, a commute is all they ask from a car,” adding, “I’m all for a product like the Mini EV.” That is Zhang’s dated analysis, not a statement from Wuling or a survey of current buyers.
It also helps explain why sales totals do not make the MINI EV and Model 3 interchangeable. A much cheaper commuter car can find a large audience by meeting a different need; its sales performance says little by itself about long-distance comfort, performance, or suitability in markets where it may not be sold.
