BMW Motorrad’s R 1300 R Superhooligan is a one-off custom roadster built to honor BMW’s 1976 Daytona Superbike victory. Based on the production R 1300 R, it was raced by Nate Kern in the MotoAmerica Super Hooligan class at Daytona in March 2026. Its number 83, orange details and race-focused hardware connect the modern build to Steve McLaughlin’s winning BMW R 90 S.
What is the BMW R 1300 R Superhooligan?
It is a one-off project from BMW Motorrad’s Custom Speed Shop, not a production trim or a retail model called “Superhooligan.” BMW describes the production R 1300 R as the build’s base, then adds distinctive styling and components for the tribute and its track appearance. The official descriptions do not establish a price, production quantity or plan to sell the finished bike.
BMW says the custom roadster can reach up to 275 km/h. That is a manufacturer-stated figure for this build, not an independently tested result; it should not be confused with the production model’s published engine output.
Which racing achievement does it honor?
The tribute looks back to 6 March 1976, when Steve McLaughlin won the first Daytona Superbike race on a BMW R 90 S. Riding for Butler & Smith, McLaughlin beat teammate Reg Pridmore in a photo finish. Pridmore went on to become the inaugural AMA Superbike Champion that season. Teammate Gary Fisher also raced an R 90 S, but a gearbox failure ended his chance at a possible team sweep.

BMW presented the custom motorcycle during the Daytona weekend of 5–7 March 2026, marking 50 years since McLaughlin’s win and Pridmore’s championship. BMW’s global article calls the meeting the 85th Daytona Bike Week; its U.S. press release calls it the 84th Daytona 200 weekend. Those are different event labels, so they should not be treated as competing ordinal descriptions of a single event.
How the custom bike differs from the production R 1300 R
The build’s orange tank and fender details and start number 83 recall McLaughlin’s 1976 R 90 S. Blue accents appear on the rear structure and fork. BMW frames the styling as a modern interpretation of the nearly naked superbikes of the 1970s.

The 145 hp and torque figures are BMW-published specifications for the production motorcycle, not independent measurements. BMW’s sources do not give a separate power figure for the custom roadster.
What parts does BMW list on the Superhooligan?
BMW names these components on the one-off build:
- M RR brakes.
- A Wilbers extended, fully adjustable upside-down fork and Wilbers suspension.
- A carbon-fiber front wheel and other carbon-fiber parts.
- An Akrapovič titanium exhaust with a carbon end silencer.
- Adjustable Advik hand levers and milled BMW Motorrad footrests.
These are parts BMW describes as fitted to this particular project. The official material does not establish that every component is sold as an upgrade for the production R 1300 R, or confirm fitment for any model year. Check compatibility and availability for the specific motorcycle before treating a named component as a purchasable bolt-on.

Who rode it at Daytona?
BMW says factory test rider and racer Nate Kern rode the Superhooligan in the MotoAmerica Super Hooligan class during the 2026 Daytona weekend. BMW reports that he finished in the middle of the field after gathering data. Kern had previously raced in the class on an R nineT and began his BMW racing career at Daytona in the 2003 Boxer Cup.
Who built the tribute?
BMW’s press release names Philipp Ludwig as project manager, with Katrin Torge, vehicle designer Andreas Martin and color and graphic designer Theresa Stukenbrock also involved. Prototype builders Paul Summerer and Thomas Becker worked on the project.
