The BMW S 1000 RR is a performance-focused superbike, while the Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono is a single-cylinder road supermotard. They are aimed at different riding formats, so the right choice depends first on whether you want superbike speed and track focus or a lighter, more upright motard concept for road use and playful riding.
The published figures also describe very different machines: BMW lists 999 cc and 205 hp at 13,000 rpm for the S 1000 RR on its current US technical page, while Ducati lists 659 cc, 77.5 hp at 9,750 rpm and 63 Nm at 8,000 rpm for the Hypermotard 698 Mono. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test measurements, and the pages may represent different market or model-year configurations. Compare the exact local versions, your fit, equipment and dealer quote before deciding.

The short answer: decide by motorcycle format first
Calling one of these bikes “better” without defining the job produces a misleading answer. The S 1000 RR and Hypermotard 698 Mono do not represent two trims of the same type of motorcycle. BMW positions the S 1000 RR as a superbike: a fully performance-oriented sport motorcycle whose natural priorities are high-speed road riding and circuit use. Ducati describes the 698 Mono as a road supermotard and calls it the company’s first single-cylinder road-going supermotard.
That distinction is more useful than a simple horsepower ranking. If your plan is track days, fast flowing roads and the aerodynamic, committed posture associated with a superbike, the BMW is the format that matches those goals. If you want an upright single-cylinder motard with a lower stated output, distinctive engine character and the ability to tailor seat height with Ducati accessories, the Ducati is the more coherent choice.

What each motorcycle is designed to be
BMW S 1000 RR: a liter-class superbike format
BMW Motorrad USA labels the S 1000 RR a performance-focused superbike on its technical-data page. Its inline-four engine and 999 cc displacement place it in the liter-bike class. BMW Motorrad USA’s technical page gives a peak output of 205 hp at 13,000 rpm. That specification points to a motorcycle built around high-output sport riding rather than a general-purpose standard or supermoto layout.
For a prospective buyer, the format normally means evaluating riding posture, wind protection, steering reach, control weight and track-day compatibility as a package. Do not assume that the BMW’s published output alone tells you how manageable it will feel at low speed or how comfortable it will be on your commute; those questions require an in-person fit check and, where available, a ride on the exact model.
Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono: a road-going single-cylinder supermotard
Ducati’s global product page and launch material present the Hypermotard 698 Mono as a road supermotard. Ducati Media House describes it as “the first single-cylinder road-going Supermotard by Ducati, born with just one aim – to transmit excitement, dominating the scene.” That is product positioning from the manufacturer, not an independent riding assessment.
The 698 Mono uses a 659 cc single-cylinder engine. Ducati publishes 77.5 hp at 9,750 rpm and 63 Nm at 8,000 rpm. Its supermotard identity is as important as those numbers: an upright, road-focused concept intended to make changes of direction, urban routes and tight roads part of the experience. Whether that layout suits you depends on your leg length, preferred posture, highway use and appetite for wind exposure, not simply on the lower peak output.

Published engine specifications
The following figures come directly from BMW Motorrad USA’s current S 1000 RR technical-data page and Ducati’s official Hypermotard 698 Mono specifications. BMW’s number is from BMW Motorrad USA’s current S 1000 RR technical-data page, accessed October 13, 2026. Ducati’s values are from its official Hypermotard 698 Mono specifications, also accessed October 13, 2026. They should not be read as independent dyno results or as a controlled comparison.
| Specification | BMW S 1000 RR | Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono |
|---|---|---|
| Engine configuration | 999 cc inline-four | 659 cc single-cylinder |
| Published maximum power | 205 hp at 13,000 rpm | 77.5 hp at 9,750 rpm |

The gap in peak power is substantial, but peak figures do not establish acceleration, lap time, fuel use, heat management or everyday smoothness. Those outcomes depend on gearing, mass, aerodynamics, electronic calibration, surface and rider inputs; BMW Motorrad USA’s and Ducati’s published specifications do not provide a like-for-like test.

Street riding: which format makes more sense?
When the BMW format is the better match
The S 1000 RR makes sense for a rider who specifically wants a superbike experience on the road and expects to attend track days. Its high-output inline-four concept is aligned with riders who value strong performance at high engine speed, a tucked-in sport posture and the option to build a dedicated circuit routine around a liter-class platform.
That choice carries practical questions. A committed sport-bike position may be tiring in stop-and-go traffic or on poor pavement for some riders, but BMW Motorrad USA’s published information does not establish a measured comfort result. Ask a dealer to let you sit in full riding gear, check reach to the bars and controls, and assess whether your routes justify the format. If most of your miles are short urban trips, a superbike may provide capability you rarely use; that is a use-case judgment, not a claim about the BMW’s quality.
When the Ducati format is the better match
The Hypermotard 698 Mono is the more natural candidate when an upright road supermotard layout, a single-cylinder engine and a narrower performance envelope fit your priorities. It can be attractive for city riding, winding back roads and riders who prefer a tall, active stance over a tucked sport-bike posture. Those are format advantages in principle; Ducati’s official pages do not provide a comparative traffic test or comfort score.

Highway distance, passenger plans, luggage needs and wind exposure deserve particular attention. The 698 Mono is a road supermotard rather than a touring motorcycle, so confirm that its ergonomics and equipment suit your longest regular journey. A test ride should include the speeds, surfaces and turning radius you actually encounter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Choose the BMW format if your priority is a superbike platform and track-day potential, and you accept a more focused riding position.
- Choose the Ducati format if you want a road supermotard character, an upright layout and a single-cylinder engine rather than liter-bike output.
- If your use is mixed, rank your weekly miles: urban and tight-road riding favors investigating the Ducati’s fit, while frequent circuit sessions favor investigating the BMW’s setup and support.
Track riding: what can and cannot be concluded
The BMW’s category gives it an obvious track-oriented rationale. A superbike format is designed around high-performance circuit riding, and the S 1000 RR’s published 205 hp figure provides considerable headroom for an experienced rider. However, BMW Motorrad USA’s and Ducati’s published specifications supply no lap times, braking distances, tire data, suspension settings, rider aids, or an independent comparison with the Ducati. It would be inaccurate to promise that the BMW will always lap faster for every rider and circuit.
The Hypermotard 698 Mono can still be a compelling track-day tool for a rider who enjoys a supermotard style, tight technical layouts and momentum-focused riding. Its 77.5 hp output is far below the BMW’s published figure, but power alone does not determine enjoyment or suitability on a small kart circuit. Ducati’s published specifications do not establish its lap-time performance, track durability or comparative electronic behavior, so those points must be checked with the exact local model and a qualified instructor or dealer.
For a track decision, identify the circuit type and your experience before comparing specifications. A fast circuit with long straights will make the BMW’s superbike format relevant; a tight venue may make the Ducati’s compact motard concept appealing. That is a planning framework, not a measured result.
Rider fit and seat-height choices
Ducati’s documented adjustment range
Ducati lists a 904 mm standard seat height for the Hypermotard 698 Mono. Its official specifications also list 889 mm with the low-seat accessory and 849 mm when the low seat is combined with the low suspension kit. These are separate configuration figures; confirm availability, installation requirements and compatibility for your exact year and market.

The 55 mm difference between the standard figure and the low-seat-plus-low-suspension configuration can materially change reach to the ground, knee angle and suspension geometry. Lowering a motorcycle is not only a seat-comfort decision: ask the dealer how the kit affects setup, clearance and handling, and have sag and controls checked after installation.
BMW fit information
BMW Motorrad USA’s technical page does not provide a comparable seat-height figure in the supplied material. Do not substitute a number from another model year or market. Sit on the exact S 1000 RR you are considering, wearing the boots and clothing you will use, and check whether you can support the motorcycle comfortably during stops and low-speed maneuvers.
A practical fit check
- Bring your normal riding boots and, if possible, your jacket and gloves.
- Check reach to the handlebars, clutch and brake levers without locking your elbows.
- Move the bike off the stand and practice a controlled stop, backing maneuver and tight turn.
- Ask about factory or genuine accessories that affect height, controls or suspension, and obtain the installation specification in writing.
- Do not judge fit from seat height alone; width, suspension sag, footwear and your stopping technique all affect real reach.
Electronics, gearbox and exact-version checks
Ducati’s equipment information requires careful reading because the global and US pages do not present the same blanket statement. The global Hypermotard 698 Mono page says Ducati Quick Shift is standard on all versions. The Ducati USA table lists Ducati Quick Shift on the RVE version and shows the base version with a six-speed gearbox. That is a market-and-variant difference, not a contradiction to gloss over.
Before paying a deposit, obtain the specification sheet for the exact VIN or model designation sold by your local dealer. Confirm whether quick shift is standard, optional or absent; which riding modes and rider aids are included; and whether accessories are bundled or separately priced. Equipment can change by country and model year, so a global product page is not sufficient evidence for a local purchase.
The BMW page should be treated the same way. Use the current local technical and equipment list rather than assuming that a US-market feature package applies elsewhere. Ask for a written list of standard equipment, optional packages, software features and warranty terms.

Price, stock and model-year availability
No directly comparable local price is established by the manufacturer information above, and the title does not specify a country. Dealer inventory and model-year status can therefore change the buying answer. A bike that appears less expensive in one market may carry different taxes, freight, registration fees or equipment in another.
Request itemized on-the-road quotes for both motorcycles in the same currency and region. Include destination or delivery charges, registration, documentation, required accessories, maintenance packages and financing costs if you would use them. Ask whether the quote is for current production, remaining previous-year stock or a special edition. Do not compare a base Hypermotard 698 Mono with an equipped RVE or a packaged S 1000 RR and call the difference a motorcycle advantage.
Decision matrix
| Your priority | More logical starting point | Why, and what to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Superbike format and high-output performance | BMW S 1000 RR | BMW identifies it as a performance-focused superbike and publishes 205 hp; verify local equipment and your tolerance for the riding position. |
| Road supermotard character | Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono | Ducati identifies it as a single-cylinder road supermotard; sit on the exact bike and evaluate highway and passenger needs. |
| Lower seat reach | Ducati, subject to accessory cost | 904 mm standard, 889 mm with low seat, or 849 mm with low seat plus low suspension kit; confirm compatibility and setup. |
| Track-day focus | Usually investigate BMW first | The superbike format aligns with circuit use, but no independent lap-time comparison is established. |
| Exact shift and electronics package | Neither without a version check | Ducati’s global and US equipment descriptions differ; obtain local documentation for both bikes. |
| Lowest purchase price | Undetermined | No country-specific, directly comparable quotes are provided; collect dealer prices for matching versions. |
What this evidence does not prove
Published specifications are useful for defining the motorcycles, but they cannot answer every ownership question. BMW Motorrad USA’s and Ducati’s published pages do not establish independent acceleration or braking numbers, lap times, cornering superiority, real-world fuel economy, reliability rankings, service costs, insurance rates, resale values or rider comfort scores.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThey also do not prove that the BMW is unsuitable for streets or that the Ducati cannot be used on a track. Those conclusions would require controlled testing, local equipment information and a clear definition of the rider, circuit and conditions. Keep the distinction between a manufacturer claim and a measured result whenever you compare dealer literature or reviews.
A step-by-step way to choose
- Define the dominant ride. Write down whether most miles are urban, open-road, touring or track. Include passenger and luggage requirements.
- Pick the format before the number. Decide whether you genuinely want a superbike or a road supermotard. Do not let the BMW’s horsepower figure make the format decision for you.
- Check your physical fit. Sit on both motorcycles in riding gear. For the Ducati, compare the standard seat with the documented low-seat and low-suspension options.
- Match the exact version. Record country, model year, trim and VIN-level equipment. Confirm quick-shift availability and every electronic package.
- Get comparable quotes. Ask dealers for itemized, on-the-road prices for equivalent equipment and clarify whether stock is current-year or carry-over.
- Arrange a qualified ride or fit appointment. Test the roads and speeds you actually use. If a ride is unavailable, do not invent certainty; base the decision on ergonomics and verified specifications.
- Recheck the decision after accessory pricing. Include the Ducati’s low-seat or suspension kit if needed, and include any BMW options required for your intended use.
Common mistakes in an S 1000 RR versus 698 Mono comparison
- Comparing horsepower as if the bikes were rivals in one class. Their engine layouts and intended formats are fundamentally different.
- Using a seat-height number from the wrong market or year. BMW Motorrad USA’s supplied material does not establish a matching figure, while Ducati publishes several accessory configurations.
- Assuming all Ducati versions include the same quick-shift equipment. The global statement and US table must be reconciled against the local trim.
- Treating manufacturer output as a dyno test. The 205 hp, 77.5 hp and 63 Nm values are published specifications, not independent measurements.
- Declaring a universal street or track winner. Circuit layout, traffic, rider experience and fit can reverse the practical preference.
- Ignoring the purchase location. Price, taxes, stock and equipment are unresolved until a dealer in your market provides a current quote.
Final buying guidance
Start with the motorcycle you actually want to ride, not the one that wins a spreadsheet. Choose the BMW S 1000 RR when a performance-focused superbike and track-oriented mission are central to your plans. Choose the Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono when a single-cylinder road supermotard, upright character and adjustable seat-height options better fit your routes and body.
Then validate the decision with an exact-version equipment sheet, a local price and a physical fit check. Because BMW Motorrad USA’s and Ducati’s published information does not include a controlled road or track comparison, the honest answer to “which is better?” is conditional: the BMW is better for the superbike brief; the Ducati is better for the road-supermotard brief.
