There is no single winner. The BMW S 1000 R is the clear paper choice if you want maximum power, four-cylinder speed and a roadster that can cover fast road miles. The Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono is the lighter, supermoto-style choice for riders who value low mass, tall-bike leverage and a more specialized single-cylinder character. Your roads, riding position, inseam, local pricing and tolerance for running costs matter more than a headline horsepower number.

The figures below come from manufacturer specifications, not an independent comparison test. BMW’s current US technical page and Ducati’s US and global pages describe different model years and markets, so confirm the exact motorcycle, equipment and price with a local dealer before ordering.

What each motorcycle is trying to do

BMW S 1000 R: a high-output roadster

BMW calls the S 1000 R a Roadster. Its 999 cc oil/water-cooled inline-four and 170-hp rating put it in the high-performance naked-bike camp. The engine layout favors a broad, rev-happy road-bike experience rather than the compact, minimalist feel associated with a single-cylinder supermoto. The standard equipment list includes Rain, Road and Dynamic riding modes, a TFT display with Connectivity, a USB socket and a six-axis sensor box supporting ABS Pro and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC). BMW describes the model and its equipment on its S 1000 R overview.

That specification makes the BMW the more natural fit for riders who regularly use open highways, fast sweepers or long connecting roads. It also gives you substantial performance headroom: 170 hp at 11,000 rpm and 84 lb-ft at 9,250 rpm are manufacturer figures, not a promise of a particular acceleration time or riding sensation. Actual speed, control and comfort depend on gearing, rider skill, tires, conditions and the version sold in your market.

Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono: a focused supermoto-style single

The Ducati uses a 659 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. Ducati lists 77.5 hp at 9,750 rpm and 46.5 lb-ft at 8,000 rpm, placing it well below the BMW on peak output while pursuing a different kind of response. The high, narrow layout and supermoto-style mission are intended to make changes of direction and playful road use central to the experience.

Ducati’s global description says, “With a curb weight without fuel of just 151 kg, the Hypermotard 698 Mono ensures all the lightness you need to experience the ultimate in motard style.” That is manufacturer language, not an independent test result. The model’s equipment list includes riding modes, Bosch Cornering ABS, traction and wheelie control, engine-brake control and launch control, although Ducati notes that equipment can vary by version and market.

Engine performance: BMW wins the numbers contest

On published peak figures, the BMW leads decisively. Its 170-hp rating is 92.5 hp higher than the Ducati’s 77.5 hp, and its 84 lb-ft peak torque is 37.5 lb-ft higher than the Ducati’s 46.5 lb-ft. Those differences indicate a much larger performance reserve for high-speed road riding, overtaking and carrying a passenger or luggage. They do not establish a specific real-world acceleration advantage because no independent back-to-back test was supplied.

When the BMW’s extra output matters

  • Highway work: More peak power gives the BMW greater margin when joining fast traffic or passing without planning as far ahead.
  • Two-up or loaded riding: The larger engine is the less compromised choice when rider, passenger and luggage add mass.
  • Fast open roads: Riders who enjoy keeping an inline-four in its upper rev range will find the BMW’s specification aligned with that goal.
  • Electronic adjustment: Rain, Road and Dynamic modes let the rider select from BMW’s documented factory strategies rather than relying on one fixed calibration.

Where the Ducati’s lower output is appropriate

  • Urban and tight roads: A 77.5-hp motorcycle can provide usable performance without the same temptation to exploit very high speeds.
  • Supermoto-style riding: The Ducati’s appeal is its compact single-cylinder identity and tall, leverage-oriented layout, not a top-speed contest.
  • Lower mass priority: The engine contributes to a much lighter published motorcycle, although the weight definitions are not identical to BMW’s.

Do not translate the output gap into a claim that the Ducati is slow or that the BMW is automatically more entertaining. A motorcycle’s gearing, throttle calibration, chassis setup, road surface and rider preference can dominate the experience at legal road speeds.

Weight: a large stated difference with an important qualification

BMW lists the S 1000 R at 438.7 lb road-ready and fully fueled. Ducati lists the Hypermotard 698 Mono at 333 lb (151 kg) wet without fuel. The nominal difference is 105.7 lb, but these are not identical measurement conditions: one includes a full fuel load and the other excludes fuel. Treat the figures as an indication of design priorities, not as a laboratory-controlled comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the Ducati’s lower figure can change

Less mass generally reduces the effort required to move a motorcycle off its stand, slow it down, change direction and catch it during a low-speed mistake. That is especially relevant on tight roads or when the rider enjoys frequent transitions. The Ducati’s narrow, tall format may also make the mass feel centralized, but that sensation must be confirmed on a ride; no independent handling test is established here.

Why the BMW’s weight is not automatically a disadvantage

The BMW’s road-ready figure includes fuel and accompanies a larger engine, four-cylinder hardware and roadster equipment. Added mass can contribute to a planted feel at speed and stability when carrying a passenger or luggage. Whether that trade-off helps you depends on your roads and physical strength. A rider who mostly travels on open highways may prefer the BMW’s substantial platform, while a rider who spends weekends on tight back roads may place a higher value on the Ducati’s lower stated mass.

Seat height and ergonomics: compare the available configurations

The standard Ducati seat is 35.6 inches, 2.9 inches taller than the BMW’s 32.7-inch standard seat. That makes the BMW the easier starting point for many riders concerned about reach, but seat height alone does not determine confidence. Seat width, suspension sag, boot sole, rider proportions and the ability to place one or both feet securely all matter.

Seat configuration BMW S 1000 R Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono
Standard 32.7 in 35.6 in
Lower accessory documented by manufacturer 31.2-in low original-equipment seat 35.0-in low-seat accessory
Lowest documented combination Not stated beyond the low seat 33.4 in with low seat plus low-suspension kit
Taller option 33.5-in high original-equipment seat Not stated

Ducati’s low-seat accessory and low-suspension combination are documented on its US model information, but fitment and availability should be confirmed for your market and model year. A lower seat can reduce legroom and change the angle at your knees; a suspension kit can alter ground clearance and setup. BMW likewise lists low and high original-equipment seats, so ask the dealer to identify which seat is installed on the specific motorcycle you are considering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to evaluate reach before buying

  1. Measure your inseam in riding boots, not barefoot.
  2. Ask the dealer to show the standard and optional seat heights for the exact stock number.
  3. Sit in your normal riding position and check whether you can operate the controls without sliding forward.
  4. Have a staff member hold the motorcycle upright while you practice one-foot stops and backing it out of a parking space.
  5. If the Ducati’s height is close to your limit, test the low seat and low-suspension configuration rather than assuming the accessory will fit every year or market.

Electronics and rider aids

Both motorcycles use modern electronic controls, but the published descriptions are not identical enough to declare one system superior. BMW lists Rain, Road and Dynamic riding modes, a TFT with Connectivity, a USB socket, a six-axis sensor box, ABS Pro and DTC as standard equipment on the cited model information. Those features address braking intervention, traction management, display information and the ability to tailor the bike to conditions.

Ducati specifies riding modes, Bosch Cornering ABS, traction control, wheelie control, engine-brake control and launch control. Ducati also warns that equipment varies across versions and markets. Verify the exact trim sheet rather than assuming that a feature shown in a global presentation appears on every local motorcycle.

What to ask during a demonstration

  • Which riding modes are installed on the displayed motorcycle?
  • Can traction, wheelie and engine-brake settings be adjusted independently, and at what levels?
  • Is the connectivity function compatible with your phone and helmet system?
  • Does the motorcycle include the same quickshifter, cruise-control or other options shown in the dealer literature? The supplied specifications do not establish those items, so do not assume them.

Maintenance and ownership information

Ducati publishes an oil-change interval of every 15,000 km and a valve-clearance check every 30,000 km on its global Hypermotard 698 Mono information. Those are manufacturer schedules; labor rates, consumables and regional service procedures determine the actual bill. The BMW technical page reviewed for this comparison did not provide matching service intervals, so a BMW-versus-Ducati maintenance-cost claim would be speculation.

Ownership question What is established What you must verify locally
Routine oil service Ducati: 15,000 km interval BMW interval, oil specification, labor price and regional schedule
Valve clearance Ducati: 30,000 km check BMW valve-check interval and both brands’ labor charges
Purchase price No comparable current local prices established Dealer quote, destination or documentation fees, taxes and promotions
Insurance and fuel No sourced comparison Your age, location, coverage, riding record and annual mileage
Resale and reliability No independent comparative data established Local demand, warranty terms, service network and model-year history

BMW’s US page notes dealer-set pricing and possible additional charges. Ducati’s equipment, specification and availability can vary by market. The BMW page currently references the 2025 motorcycle, while Ducati’s US page is titled MY24; because the title of this comparison does not specify a year, confirm whether the dealer is quoting a current, prior-year or regional version.

Which bike suits common riding plans?

Choose the BMW S 1000 R when…

  • You want the highest published power and torque in this pairing.
  • Your riding includes highways, fast sweepers, long-distance connections or frequent two-up use.
  • You prefer a lower standard seat and the option of a 31.2-inch low seat.
  • You value the documented roadster electronics package, including three named riding modes, TFT connectivity and a USB socket.
  • You are comfortable paying for a larger, more powerful motorcycle even though a comparable BMW service schedule was not established here.

Choose the Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono when…

  • You specifically want a supermoto-style motorcycle rather than a conventional high-output roadster.
  • Low published mass is a higher priority than peak horsepower.
  • You enjoy a tall riding position and can manage the 35.6-inch standard seat or a documented lower configuration.
  • You want the published package of cornering ABS, traction and wheelie control, engine-brake control and launch control, subject to local equipment.
  • The Ducati dealer network, service schedule and local price make sense for your ownership plan.

When neither is the obvious answer

If you need substantial luggage capacity, a very low seat, easy passenger accommodation or a detailed total-cost comparison before purchase, do not decide from this table alone. These specifications do not establish touring range, passenger comfort, fuel economy, reliability, insurance cost or resale value. Those are dealer- and market-specific questions that require a configuration check and a ride.

A practical test-ride decision process

  1. Define the roads you actually ride. Estimate the share of city streets, tight back roads, highways and two-up trips. The BMW’s output and roadster format favor fast open-road use; the Ducati’s concept favors lighter, supermoto-style riding.
  2. Set a reach requirement. Decide whether you need one-foot stability, flat-footing or simply confidence at stops. Compare the standard and accessory seats on the actual motorcycles.
  3. Ride both back to back. Use the same route and spend time at parking-lot speeds, steady cruising and repeated corners. This is an evaluation recommendation, not a claim that a test was conducted for this article.
  4. Check the exact specification sheet. Confirm model year, market equipment, seat, suspension kit, colors and any option packages.
  5. Request written ownership numbers. Ask for out-the-door price, scheduled service labor, parts pricing, warranty terms and insurance estimates for your location.
  6. Make the decision by priority. If peak output is non-negotiable, the BMW wins on paper. If low mass and a supermoto identity are non-negotiable, the Ducati is the more coherent choice.

Final verdict: better depends on the priority you refuse to compromise

The BMW S 1000 R is the better answer for a rider seeking a powerful, electronics-equipped naked roadster. Its 170-hp inline-four, 84 lb-ft peak torque and lower standard seat give it the stronger specification for fast road work and broad usability.

The Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono is the better answer for a rider who wants a lighter, taller, single-cylinder supermoto-style motorcycle and accepts substantially less peak output. Its 333-lb wet-without-fuel figure, documented lower-seat options and 15,000/30,000-km service schedule support that focused brief, while the weight comparison must be read alongside BMW’s fully fueled measurement.

Before signing a deal, confirm the model year, local equipment, seat configuration, dealer price and service support. A properly fitted test ride is the only reliable way to decide whether the BMW’s size and power or the Ducati’s lightness and tall supermoto ergonomics suit you.
