BMW’s U.S. recall 26V056 covers 87,394 potentially affected vehicles—the precise figure behind the rounded “90,000” headline. Wear inside the engine starter may cause it to overheat and catch fire. Check your vehicle identification number (VIN); if the recall is open for your vehicle, a dealer will replace the starter free of charge.
What is the BMW starter-motor recall?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lists the campaign as 26V056, under “electrical system: starter assembly.” BMW of North America reported it on January 30, 2026, and NHTSA acknowledged the campaign on February 6, 2026. NHTSA’s acknowledgement identifies 87,394 as the potential number of affected units; it does not establish how many have experienced a failure.
NHTSA describes the defect this way: “The engine starter may overheat and catch fire due to wear on an internal component.” The stated consequence is an increased risk of injury if a fire occurs. The acknowledgement does not state a fire, failure, or injury rate.
How to check whether your vehicle is included
- Find the 17-digit VIN. Use the VIN shown on the vehicle or its registration documents.
- Check the recall status. Enter the VIN in BMW’s recall lookup or search NHTSA’s recall database for campaign 26V056.
- Book the repair if the recall is open. BMW advises owners to contact a local BMW partner to arrange an appointment. Recall work is free.
The acknowledgement’s makes-and-models table names Toyota Supra model years 2021–2023 and BMW X3, 330i, 430i, Z4, X4, 530i, and 230i. Its narrative gives additional model-year and configuration details, but says that its list is incomplete and directs readers to the complete recall report. A model and year match is not enough to confirm eligibility: use the VIN result and campaign number.

What repair will dealers perform?
NHTSA’s stated remedy is: “Dealers will replace the engine starter, free of charge.” If a VIN lookup shows the recall is open, contact a BMW partner to schedule the repair and follow the dealer’s instructions. BMW’s letter projected that owner notification letters and VIN searchability would begin March 24, 2026. Because that date has passed, check the current VIN status rather than relying on the projected schedule.
Do not confuse this with BMW’s 2025 starter-relay recall
Campaign 26V056 is separate from the BMW starter-relay recall in NHTSA’s September 26, 2025 alert, campaign 25V636. That earlier alert covered nearly 200,000 model-year 2019–2022 BMWs and 1,469 Toyota Supra vehicles, and instructed owners of vehicles in that campaign to park outside and away from buildings and other vehicles until eligibility was ruled out or the remedy completed.

Do not transfer that parking instruction to campaign 26V056: the reviewed NHTSA acknowledgement for 26V056 does not include a park-outside direction. Check the campaign attached to your VIN and follow the guidance for that specific recall.
