For two rows, it includes the redesigned Subaru Outback and Honda Passport. These are expert recommendations, not a uniform test of every 2026 model or proof of one universal winner.
Start with two rows or three
A two-row SUV is the more direct fit if your regular passengers can sit in the front and second row. Choose a three-row model when you expect to carry more than five people or need occasional extra seating—but judge it with the third row in use, not just by its maximum cargo figure. The available recommendations treat these layouts separately, so comparing every model as though it served the same job would be misleading.
Best 2026 three-row midsize SUVs
Edmunds’ recommendations, as reported by the Associated Press on July 29, 2026, emphasize different strengths rather than naming a single choice for every family. The descriptions below are attributed editorial assessments, not standardized measurements across all contenders.

The Atlas merits a look if cabin size is central, but confirm the layout and cargo room you need in person. Those are starting points based on the reported recommendations, not measured head-to-head verdicts.

Subaru Outback
The report describes the Outback as utility-oriented and notes that it has a comparatively lower starting price among the listed picks. Treat that price comparison as the report’s assessment, not a current quote or a like-for-like trim comparison. Check current equipment and pricing before deciding whether the lower entry point holds for the version you want.

Honda Passport
The redesigned Passport retains substantial passenger room and cargo space while gaining a more rugged look and updated technology, according to the report. If you want a two-row SUV with that character, compare its actual cargo configuration and standard equipment against the Outback rather than relying on styling or a maximum-capacity claim alone.
How to compare space, efficiency and price fairly
Check space with the seats you will use
For a three-row SUV, sit in every row and check whether the third row works for the people who will use it. Then look at the cargo area behind that occupied row: maximum cargo capacity with seats folded does not tell you what remains for luggage when the vehicle is full. For two-row models, compare second-row comfort and the usable load floor with seats upright. The available recommendations do not provide a consistent set of cargo measurements or passenger-fit tests across all seven models.

Compare the exact powertrain, not the model name
Separate gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions when comparing fuel economy. Use the EPA rating for the exact model year, powertrain, drivetrain and trim where ratings differ; do not apply one configuration’s figure to an entire model line. No complete, consistent set of 2026 EPA figures for this shortlist is established here, so a precise cross-model MPG table would imply more certainty than the available evidence supports. Honda says its 2026 Pilot EPA ratings are for comparison and actual mileage varies with driving, maintenance, conditions and other factors; that caveat concerns the Pilot and should not be mistaken for a model-specific rating for the Passport.
Put prices on the same footing
Compare the same kind of price—such as manufacturer starting MSRP or similarly equipped trim pricing—and account for destination charges, options and geography. Honda’s official 2026 Pilot release says Pilot MSRP excludes tax, license, registration, options and a $1,495 destination charge. That charge is specific to Honda’s Pilot disclosure; it should not be applied to other brands or assumed to be the Passport’s charge. The available recommendations do not supply a consistent set of current prices for the shortlist, so they cannot establish an overall best-value winner.

What the safety ratings do—and do not—tell you
Safety awards and crash-test ratings are model-year and test-specific. IIHS lists the 2026 Explorer as a Top Safety Pick and the 2026 Honda Passport, Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Palisade, Mazda CX-70, Mazda CX-90, Nissan Murano, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent and other vehicles as Top Safety Pick+ winners. Eligibility can depend on build date: for example, IIHS says the 2026 Kia Sorento award applies to vehicles built after September 2025 and the Palisade award to vehicles built after November 2025. Verify the model year, exact award level and build restriction against the vehicle you are considering.
Do not assume a model is an award winner just because another year of that name appears on the IIHS list. The cited page’s Telluride restriction concerns the 2027 model year, while its Palisade restriction concerns 2026 vehicles built after the stated date. IIHS also publishes category-level ratings; its current midsize class summary shows that the 2026 Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander differ in some categories, illustrating why a single badge cannot replace examination of individual results.

NHTSA’s 2026 model-year page identifies vehicles selected for crash testing; selection is not itself a complete class rating. Its overview cautions that a high star rating can still leave a safety concern. Consider the relevant crash-test details and driver-assistance equipment alongside NHTSA stars and IIHS results rather than treating any one score as a complete safety verdict.
How to make the final shortlist
- Decide how many seats you truly need. If five seats suffice, begin with the Outback and Passport; if the third row will be used, compare the five three-row recommendations.
- Test the occupied layout. Bring the people who will ride in the vehicle, check access to the third row where relevant, and load the kind of luggage or equipment you regularly carry.
- Choose the powertrain before comparing fuel costs. Identify the exact gas, hybrid or plug-in hybrid version and confirm its model-year EPA rating.
- Request comparable out-the-door figures. Match equipment as closely as possible and account for destination, options, taxes and registration in your own quote.
- Check safety results for the exact vehicle. Confirm model year, IIHS award level and any build-date condition; review the applicable NHTSA and IIHS rating details.
These steps can narrow the field, but a defensible total-value ranking also needs aligned trim pricing, EPA data, included equipment and reliability evidence for every candidate. The reported shortlist alone does not establish those comparisons.
