BMW identifies seven generations of the M5 sedan: E28, E34, E39, E60, F10, F90 and G90. The years commonly attached to those generations are BMW’s introduction labels—not a definitive worldwide list of the years each version was sold. Market and source conventions differ, so the timeline below distinguishes BMW’s generation years from U.S. sale-year ranges where available.
BMW M5 generations at a glance
| Generation | BMW generation year | Engine and key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| E28 | 1985 | 3.5-litre inline-six; the first M5 |
| E34 | 1988 | Inline-six, initially 3.6 litres and later 3.8 litres |
| E39 | 1998 | First M5 with a five-litre V8 |
| E60 | 2005 | Naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V10 |
| F10 | 2011 | 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 |
| F90 | 2017 | First M5 with M xDrive all-wheel drive |
| G90 | 2024 | First M5 generation with an M HYBRID system |
These are the generation-introduction years in BMW M’s overview, not a complete market-by-market production or sales calendar. BMW USA, for example, lists the E60 as 2005–2010 and the F10 as 2012–2016, while BMW M labels the F10 generation 2011. Use the source and market when interpreting a year range. BMW M’s M5 generation overview and BMW USA’s M5 retrospective use different conventions.
What are the BMW M5 generations?
E28: 1985
The first M5 paired a sedan body with a 3.5-litre inline-six originally developed for the M1. BMW M lists output of 210 kW (286 hp), torque of 340 Nm and 0–100 km/h acceleration in 6.5 seconds. BMW says E28 M5s were entirely handmade until production ended. BMW UK dates the car’s introduction to autumn 1984; BMW M uses 1985 as the generation label, so the dates reflect different ways of describing its arrival. BMW M; BMW Group UK’s M5 history.
E34: 1988
The E34 continued with an inline-six. BMW’s overview lists 3,535 cm³ and an output range of 232–250 kW (315–340 hp), reflecting different versions; BMW UK describes the engine as beginning at 3.6 litres and later growing to 3.8 litres. The E34 Touring, introduced from 1992, was a wagon rather than a sedan. BMW M says fewer than 1,000 Touring models were made; BMW UK specifies 900. BMW M; BMW Group UK.

E39: 1998
The E39 brought a five-litre V8—the first V8 in an M5. BMW M rates it at 294 kW (400 hp) and 500 Nm, with a stated 0–100 km/h time of 5.3 seconds and a listed top speed of 250 km/h. BMW UK describes the engine as a 5.0-litre, 32-valve V8. These are manufacturer figures, not a comparison test across generations. BMW M; BMW Group UK.
E60: 2005
BMW replaced the V8 with a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V10. BMW M lists 373 kW (507 hp), 520 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and a 250 km/h top speed. BMW UK notes the seven-speed SMG transmission and launch control; BMW USA cites an 8,250-rpm redline. The U.S. retrospective gives the E60’s market range as 2005–2010. BMW M; BMW Group UK; BMW USA.

F10: 2011
The F10 returned to a V8, this time a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged engine. BMW M gives a range of 412–423 kW (560–575 hp), 680 Nm and 0–100 km/h times of 4.3–4.2 seconds, reflecting versions rather than one uniform specification. BMW UK documents a 2013 Competition Package and a 2014 30th anniversary edition. BMW USA lists the U.S. F10 range as 2012–2016, although BMW M’s generation overview labels it 2011. BMW M; BMW Group UK; BMW USA.
F90: 2017
The F90 was the first M5 with M xDrive. BMW M reports up to 460 kW (625 hp), 750 Nm and 0–100 km/h in 3.3 seconds for the Competition version; those figures should not be treated as the standard F90’s specification. BMW Spain distinguishes standard, Competition and CS versions, each with its own output and acceleration figures. BMW M; BMW Spain.

The broad engine progression is inline-six in the E28 and E34, a V8 in the E39, a naturally aspirated V10 in the E60, turbocharged V8s in the F10 and F90, then the M HYBRID system in the G90. The F90 also marked the arrival of M xDrive. This overview is useful for orientation, but a generation name alone does not specify a car’s trim, market equipment or exact performance figures.

Do Touring models count as M5 sedan generations?
No. BMW also produced M5 Touring wagons, including the E34 and E61, but they are different body styles, not additional sedan generations. The E34 Touring is part of the E34 generation; the E61 Touring belongs to the E60-era family. BMW’s historical coverage discusses the Touring variants alongside the M5 story. BMW Group UK’s history; BMW M’s overview.
How to read M5 model-year claims
- Generation year: BMW M’s overview uses a year to identify each generation’s arrival, such as F10 2011.
- Market sale or model years: A national retrospective may use the years cars were sold or designated in that market; BMW USA lists the F10 as 2012–2016.
- Trim and units: Competition and CS versions can have different figures from standard models, and sources may use different horsepower units. Keep the trim, source, and units attached to any specification.
- Body style: Touring models are wagons and should not be mistaken for extra sedan generations.
BMW’s cited pages do not establish a single complete worldwide production-year table for every M5. For a specific used car, verify its model year and configuration against its market documentation rather than inferring them from the generation label.
