What the i8 is—and what used buyers should know
BMW identifies the i8 Coupe and Roadster as 2014–2020 legacy plug-in hybrids, now out of production. The car pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with electric propulsion; BMW says it can be driven without charging. It is not a battery-electric sports car. BMW USA’s legacy i8 page
For historical context, BMW’s 2020 announcement said updated versions received cells with capacity increased from 20 to 34 Ah and gross battery energy content of 11.6 kWh. BMW reported 0–100 km/h in 4.4 seconds for the Coupe and 4.6 seconds for the Roadster. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests. BMW’s model overview lists first-generation production from 2013 to 2020, combined power of 266–275 kW (362–374 hp), depending on version, and up to 55 km of electric range under the NEDC test cycle. What the depreciation evidence does—and does not—say
Kelley Blue Book’s surfaced 2020 BMW i8 entry gives a resale estimate of $57,900 and a trade-in estimate of $54,800. Those are estimates for a particular model year and market context, not asking prices, completed-sale prices, or a depreciation curve for every i8. The available figures do not establish the car’s original U.S. MSRP by configuration or provide a matched sample of current asking prices. They therefore cannot support a defensible percentage-loss calculation or the claim that i8 values have bottomed out. Future resale, collector demand, and repair-adjusted value remain uncertain.

How to compare asking prices fairly
Compare the car you are considering with local examples that match as closely as possible. Start with model year and Coupe versus Roadster, then account for mileage, condition, equipment, accident history, service documentation, and local supply. A valuation estimate is a useful reference point, but it is not a substitute for comparable listings or a condition assessment.
Check warranty and maintenance coverage by VIN
BMW USA describes high-voltage battery defect coverage as 8 years or 100,000 miles from the vehicle’s in-service date, whichever comes first. That limit does not show whether a particular used i8 is still eligible, and it should not be read as proof of capacity-loss coverage. Terms can vary by vehicle, market, and warranty document. Scheduled maintenance is separate from the battery warranty. BMW USA says its program for model-year 2017 and newer vehicles covers specified scheduled items for 3 years or 36,000 miles, subject to program terms; coverage for 2014–2016 vehicles differs. Make the purchase contingent on a thorough inspection
A used-car review reports several model-year-specific recall or defect leads, including a possible fuel leak on some 2014 cars, a stability-sensor issue on some 2015 cars, an airbag issue on late-2016 cars, a printed-circuit-board recall on 2019 cars, and a high-voltage battery impurity action on 2020 cars. That review also relays mixed owner anecdotes: one or two owners reportedly described engine failure, while most comments discussed excellent reliability. Anecdotes do not establish a statistical reliability rate or predict the condition of an individual car. Use the review as a prompt for questions, not as a substitute for vehicle-specific checks.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Ask for records: Review maintenance documentation, ownership and accident history, and records of repairs to the hybrid, high-voltage, gasoline, and chassis systems.
- Check recalls: Have BMW or the applicable national recall authority confirm campaigns by VIN and whether required work is complete.
- Confirm warranty eligibility: Establish the in-service date, mileage, applicable market terms, remaining coverage, and any relevant exclusions directly with BMW.
- Book a specialist inspection: Choose a shop familiar with BMW plug-in hybrids and ask it to assess the hybrid and high-voltage systems alongside the gasoline powertrain and chassis.
- Assess local support: Before committing, determine whether qualified service and parts are accessible where you live, and whether you can absorb potentially costly age-related repairs.
Decide whether an i8 fits your use
The i8’s gasoline engine means charging is not required for mobility, according to BMW. That does not mean electric range will match your commute or expectations: actual results depend on the individual car and driving conditions, while BMW’s published maximum is an NEDC-cycle figure.

Consider whether you have convenient charging, how you will use the car day to day, and whether its design and performance character justify the added inspection and repair uncertainty. A buyer looking for low-cost, predictable ownership may find that uncertainty a poor fit; a buyer who values the i8’s unusual format and can budget for specialist care may consider it on its merits.
Verdict: buy the specific car, not the depreciation story
The i8’s available KBB figures are too narrow to prove a universal rate of depreciation or establish that values have reached a floor. Treat them as one reference point, compare like-for-like local examples, and proceed only when a qualified inspection, documented history, recall verification, and VIN-specific warranty check support the price.
