There is no universal winner between the BMW R 12 and Harley-Davidson Fat Bob. Choose the R 12 if you value a lower, lighter and more compact package with clearly published current UK specifications. Choose a Fat Bob if its particular model year is available in your market and you want the Softail-based stance, Milwaukee-Eight 114 character and longer wheelbase. The deciding evidence is not engine size alone: it is your riding position, confidence at low speed, local price and availability, and what you feel on a properly matched test ride.
The short answer: which one is better?
For a rider who wants an easier-to-manage cruiser with a 754 mm seat, 227 kg road-ready weight and a 1,520 mm wheelbase, the BMW R 12 is the more straightforward recommendation. Those figures come from BMW Motorrad’s current UK technical-data page and describe a compact package on one consistent market specification.

The Harley-Davidson Fat Bob is the better choice for a rider who specifically wants its Softail family character, a Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine in the documented 2022 version, dual front discs, an inverted fork and adjustable rear suspension. However, the available Harley specifications refer to particular FXFB/FXFBS variants and a 2022 Fat Bob 114 listing. They do not establish that a new Fat Bob is sold in every country in 2026, nor do they provide a single specification sheet for every year.
That makes the buying decision conditional:
- Pick the R 12 when low seat height, lower mass, a shorter wheelbase and a clearly documented current model matter most.
- Pick the Fat Bob when its documented equipment, engine identity and longer-wheelbase feel match your priorities, and a new or used example is actually available locally.
- Do not decide from displacement or styling alone. Arrange rides on the exact year and variant you can buy, then compare reach to the bars and controls, low-speed balance, braking feel and comfort over the roads you use.
What is being compared—and what is not
BMW R 12
The R 12 is BMW Motorrad’s air/oil-cooled boxer-powered cruiser. The current UK listing specifies a 1,170 cc engine producing 70 kW (95 hp) at 6,500 rpm and 110 Nm at 6,000 rpm. BMW describes the motor as providing strong torque and acceleration at low revs; that wording is BMW’s promotional description, not an independent performance test.

BMW’s UK data also gives a 227 kg road-ready mass, a 754 mm unladen seat height, a 14-litre usable fuel tank, a 1,520 mm wheelbase and a 100/90 R19 front tyre. These figures are useful because they are presented together for one market, but they still describe the motorcycle on paper rather than how it will fit an individual rider.
Harley-Davidson Fat Bob
“Fat Bob” covers more than one model year and variant. Harley-Davidson service material documents FXFB and FXFBS Softail variants, while Harley’s marketplace material identifies a used 2022 Fat Bob 114 with a Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine. The same listing describes dual front disc brakes, an inverted fork, adjustable rear suspension and a 2-1-2 exhaust.
The service information gives the FXFBS a 1,615 mm wheelbase and a 13.25-litre (3.5 US-gallon) tank. It also gives seat-height figures under a rider-load condition and weight figures using shipped and running-order terminology. Those conditions are not interchangeable with BMW’s unladen seat and road-ready weight, so an apparently precise numerical comparison can be misleading.

Published specifications side by side
| Specification | BMW R 12 (UK listing) | Fat Bob (documented Harley evidence) | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | 1,170 cc air/oil-cooled boxer | Milwaukee-Eight 114 on the 2022 Fat Bob 114 listing; FXFB/FXFBS variant documentation also exists | These are different model-year and market references, not one universal Fat Bob specification. |
| Peak power | 70 kW (95 hp) at 6,500 rpm | Not stated in the cited Fat Bob material | Do not infer a power winner from the engine name or displacement. |
| Peak torque | 110 Nm at 6,000 rpm | No directly comparable torque figure was established | Use a verified year-and-market torque figure if it matters to your decision. |
| Road-ready/running weight | 227 kg road-ready | Exact comparison depends on the documented FXFB/FXFBS variant and whether shipped or running-order weight is used | Ask the seller for the same measurement basis before comparing mass. |
| Seat height | 754 mm, unladen | Service information lists a rider-load condition for the documented FX variants | Seat numbers measured under different loads cannot be treated as like-for-like. |
| Fuel tank | 14 L usable | 13.25 L (3.5 US gal) for the documented FXFBS | Usable and stated capacity are not necessarily the same measurement, and neither is real-world range. |
| Wheelbase | 1,520 mm | 1,615 mm for FXFBS | The 95 mm difference shows a different chassis package; it does not prove which bike handles better. |
| Front tyre | 100/90 R19 | Exact year-and-variant fitment must be checked | Order a replacement only after checking the motorcycle’s approval, load and speed ratings. |
| Brakes and suspension named in the source | Not stated in the supplied UK data used here | 2022 listing: dual front discs, inverted fork and adjustable rear suspension | Equipment can change by year and market; inspect the exact bike. |
The table deliberately leaves unsupported Fat Bob values open. A number borrowed from another year, country or trim would create false precision rather than a fair comparison.
Engine character and everyday performance
What the R 12’s published figures tell you
The R 12’s 110 Nm arrives at 6,000 rpm, with 70 kW (95 hp) at 6,500 rpm. Those are manufacturer figures, not acceleration or top-speed test results. They establish the engine’s rated output and the speed at which the peaks occur, but they do not predict how smoothly the bike responds in traffic, how much vibration reaches the rider or how quickly it gains speed in a particular gear.

BMW’s own description emphasizes low-rev torque and acceleration. Treat that as an indication of the intended character, then test it by riding through slow corners, roundabouts and open-road overtakes without relying on a stopwatch. Pay attention to throttle response, clutch take-up and whether the engine’s pulse suits you after an hour rather than after a five-minute demonstration.
What “Milwaukee-Eight 114” establishes about the Fat Bob
The 2022 Fat Bob 114 listing identifies the Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine. It does not, in the material available here, provide a torque figure directly comparable with the R 12’s 110 Nm. The engine designation is therefore useful for identifying the motorcycle and its intended Harley-Davidson character, but it is not a complete performance claim.
On a test ride, evaluate the same situations as on the BMW: pulling away on an incline, maintaining a steady low-speed line, accelerating onto a faster road and modulating the throttle mid-corner. The aim is to discover which response you can control and enjoy, not to declare a winner from an unverified specification.
Why displacement is a poor shortcut
The R 12’s 1,170 cc and the Fat Bob’s “114” designation come from different engine families and naming conventions. Displacement alone does not account for gearing, throttle calibration, engine speed, chassis mass or rider position. Even a verified horsepower comparison would not settle comfort, manoeuvrability or enjoyment.
Mass, wheelbase and low-speed confidence
BMW publishes 227 kg road-ready for the R 12. Harley documentation uses shipped and running-order figures for specific FX variants, and the exact value must be matched to the year and market. Do not compare BMW’s road-ready number with a Harley shipping number; ask for both motorcycles’ running condition with the same fluids and equipment.
The documented 1,615 mm FXFBS wheelbase is 95 mm longer than the R 12’s 1,520 mm. That is a genuine packaging difference. It may affect how much room the motorcycle occupies in a garage, how easily you can pivot it in a tight driveway and how the steering feels at walking pace. It does not, by itself, establish superior stability, cornering or comfort.

During a ride, perform a controlled low-speed check in an empty area:
- Walk both motorcycles backward using the handlebars and, if needed, a helper. Note whether you can reach the ground securely and keep the bike balanced.
- Ride at walking pace with the bars near full lock in both directions. Check for unwanted wrist bend, tank contact or a tendency to run wide.
- Make several stops on uneven ground. A low seat helps only if the bar, peg and control positions also let you brace the motorcycle comfortably.
- Repeat the manoeuvres after the fuel level and riding gear approximate your normal use. A specification measured without luggage does not represent a touring load.
Seat height and riding position
R 12: a clear 754 mm reference
The R 12’s 754 mm seat figure is unladen. It gives a useful starting point for riders concerned about inseam reach, but it is not a guarantee that both feet will sit flat. Seat width, suspension sag, boot sole thickness and the distance to the handlebars all change the practical reach.
Fat Bob: verify the load condition
Harley’s service information lists seat height for the documented FX variants with a rider-load condition. That makes the number unsuitable for a direct one-line comparison with BMW’s unladen measurement. Sit on the exact Fat Bob with your normal boots and jacket, and ask the dealer which variant and load condition the displayed specification represents.

Controls matter as much as the seat
Measure comfort by control reach, not just inseam clearance. You should be able to cover the front brake without stretching, turn the bars without pulling your shoulders forward and place both feet where you can catch the bike during a slow stop. A motorcycle that is technically reachable but forces a cramped knee angle can become tiring on every ride.
Fuel capacity, range and touring practicality
The R 12 has a 14-litre usable tank in BMW’s UK specification. The documented FXFBS has a 13.25-litre (3.5 US-gallon) capacity. Those figures are close enough that neither motorcycle earns a range victory from tank size alone.
Range requires comparable fuel-consumption data, riding conditions, reserve strategy and speed. No directly comparable consumption test is established here, so calculate your own planning margin from the motorcycle’s trip computer or repeated fuel receipts after purchase. Leave a reserve for weather, traffic and detours rather than treating the entire stated capacity as usable distance.

For touring, inspect more than the tank:
- Check whether the exact motorcycle accepts the luggage, passenger equipment and wind protection you need.
- Confirm payload limits in the owner’s manual before adding a passenger or loaded cases.
- Look at fuel-stop spacing on your regular routes and identify dealers or recovery support along them.
- Ride for at least 45–60 minutes if possible; a seat that feels fine around a showroom can reveal pressure points on a longer stint.
Brakes, suspension and tyre considerations
The 2022 Fat Bob 114 listing names dual front disc brakes, an inverted fork and adjustable rear suspension. Those features identify the documented motorcycle’s equipment; they do not guarantee a particular stopping distance or ride quality. Brake feel depends on pad condition, tyre grip, setup and rider input, while suspension adjustment must match rider weight and luggage.
The BMW data supplied here does not establish a directly comparable brake or suspension specification. Inspect the R 12 you are buying rather than assuming that a later or different-market version has the same equipment.
Replacing the R 12 front tyre
The R 12’s published front size is 100/90 R19. It is a useful starting point when searching for a replacement, but size alone is not approval. Before ordering, verify the exact model year, wheel construction, load index, speed rating, tubed or tubeless requirement and any manufacturer fitment restriction. The tyre sidewall and owner’s manual should agree with the supplier’s listing.
For the Fat Bob, confirm the exact front and rear sizes from the motorcycle’s VIN-specific manual or sidewall. FXFB and FXFBS references are not a substitute for checking the trim and year in front of you.

Which rider should choose the BMW R 12?
- Shorter inseam or frequent stops: Start with the 754 mm unladen seat, then confirm real reach in your boots.
- Urban and suburban use: The 1,520 mm wheelbase and 227 kg road-ready figure make the R 12 the more compact, clearly quantified option on paper. Test low-speed balance rather than assuming geometry guarantees ease.
- Preference for a boxer engine: The 1,170 cc air/oil-cooled layout and BMW’s stated low-rev emphasis provide a distinct mechanical identity.
- Need for a clearly current reference specification: BMW’s UK page supplies a complete set of core figures for one market, making it easier to verify what you are buying.
Which rider should choose the Harley-Davidson Fat Bob?
- Strong preference for Harley’s engine and chassis character: The documented 2022 motorcycle uses a Milwaukee-Eight 114 and the listed Softail equipment.
- Comfort with a longer-wheelbase stance: The documented FXFBS measurement is 1,615 mm, 95 mm longer than the R 12.
- Interest in the listed hardware: Dual front discs, an inverted fork and adjustable rear suspension are part of the 2022 listing’s description; verify that the example you are buying has the same equipment.
- Access to a good local used example: A well-documented 2022 motorcycle may be the realistic option where a new Fat Bob is not currently offered.
A test-ride method that can settle the decision
Book rides on the exact R 12 and Fat Bob year, trim and tyre condition you would purchase. Use the same route and avoid judging one bike on a short demonstration while giving the other an hour.
- Before starting: Record odometer, tyre pressures, fuel level and any luggage or accessories. Ask for the seat-height measurement condition and running weight basis.
- Fit check: Sit in your normal gear. Check both feet, knee angle, wrist position, mirror visibility and whether you can turn the bars without leaning your torso.
- Clutch and throttle: Make repeated starts on level ground and a mild incline. Look for controllable engagement and predictable response, not a dramatic first impression.
- Low-speed handling: Ride figure eights and tight turns at walking pace. Note steering effort, balance when stopping and how confidently you can dab a foot.
- Open-road response: Use a safe, legal stretch to assess roll-on acceleration, wind exposure and vibration at your normal cruising speed. Do not treat this as an independently measured performance test.
- Braking: Make progressive stops with increasing pressure in a clear area. Compare lever reach, feedback and stability while leaving a generous safety margin.
- Ride quality: Cross the same patched surface and several bends. Record whether the suspension and seating remain comfortable after at least 45 minutes.
- After the ride: Write down three positives, three irritations and one issue you would need to resolve with setup or accessories. Make the decision from those notes, not showroom lighting or engine noise alone.
Common comparison mistakes
Mixing Fat Bob with Fat Boy
Fat Bob and Fat Boy are different Harley-Davidson motorcycles. A Fat Boy specification page cannot answer a Fat Bob question. Verify the model name, model code and year on the registration and VIN documentation.

Comparing unlike measurements
BMW’s 227 kg is road-ready and its 754 mm seat is unladen. Harley service material uses shipped/running-order weight terminology and a rider-load seat condition. Label the basis beside every figure you write down.
Turning tank size into range
Fourteen litres versus 13.25 litres does not predict fuel stops. Consumption, reserve policy, speed, load and weather can outweigh a 0.75-litre capacity difference.
Assuming a wheelbase proves handling
The 1,520 mm and 1,615 mm figures describe packaging. They do not replace a ride on your roads, with your reach and your preferred pace.

Decision checklist
- Have you identified the exact Fat Bob year, FXFB/FXFBS variant and market?
- Are both seat-height figures measured under comparable conditions?
- Are both weight figures based on the same running condition?
- Can you place both feet securely and reach every control in riding gear?
- Did you ride each motorcycle for long enough to expose comfort problems?
- Have you obtained current local prices, registration costs, insurance and service estimates?
- Is the motorcycle actually available through a dealer or seller you can verify?
- For an R 12 tyre purchase, did you confirm 100/90 R19 plus load, speed and construction requirements?
- For a Fat Bob, did you verify the tyre sizes and equipment from the exact motorcycle rather than a generic model page?
Verdict
The BMW R 12 is the safer paper recommendation for riders prioritizing manageable dimensions, a low seat and a complete current UK specification: 95 hp, 110 Nm, 227 kg road-ready, 754 mm unladen seat, 14-litre usable tank and 1,520 mm wheelbase. The Harley-Davidson Fat Bob is the more compelling choice when its Milwaukee-Eight 114 identity, Softail hardware and 1,615 mm documented wheelbase fit your preferences and a suitable example is available.
Because the Fat Bob evidence is tied to specific variants and a 2022 listing, the final decision must be made against the exact motorcycle and local market. Take both rides, normalize the measurement conditions and compare real ownership costs. The bike that lets you control low-speed manoeuvres, remain comfortable after an hour and obtain dependable local support is the better one for you.
