What each motorcycle is designed to do
BMW R 12: a lighter, minimalist boxer cruiser
BMW positions the R 12 as a laid-back cruiser built around its air/oil-cooled boxer twin. The cylinders project horizontally from the engine cases, giving the bike the visual identity and low center-of-mass feel associated with BMW’s heritage models. The technical page identifies a cardan final drive, so the rear wheel is driven through a shaft rather than a chain. Harley rates the 2026 engine at 98 hp at 4,600 rpm and 120 ft-lb at 2,500 rpm. The lower engine-speed torque peak is consistent with the relaxed, low-rpm V-twin character many cruiser riders seek, but these are still rating-sheet numbers. Do not treat 98 hp versus 95 hp as a measured horsepower contest, and do not convert the torque figures into a ranking without accounting for the different units, test procedures and vehicle masses.

Engine character and drivetrain: what you will feel
Boxer versus V-twin layout

When the Harley’s lower laden seat matters
The Heritage Classic’s 26.3-inch laden seat can help riders whose priority is placing both feet securely at a stop. Because Harley measures the seat with the motorcycle laden and BMW lists an unladen 29.7-inch figure, sit on both bikes with your normal boots and riding gear. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the suspension’s settled height and check whether the seat shape narrows at the tank; reach depends on width as well as the published vertical number.
Do not equate low seat with easy handling
A low seat can improve confidence at a stop while the motorcycle’s total mass still affects pushing, turning and lifting from the side stand. The Heritage’s 719-lb running-order figure means a short-reach rider should practice a full-lock turn, a reverse-foot shuffle and a controlled standstill before committing. Building an R 12 for travel
BMW’s cited page refers to optional equipment and genuine accessories but does not establish equivalent standard luggage volume. A touring-ready R 12 may therefore require selecting bags, mounting hardware, a windshield and any passenger equipment from the local configurator. Request an itemized build sheet, including accessory labor, before comparing prices. Comparing a base BMW with a fully equipped Heritage can make the Harley appear better value simply because the BMW’s touring hardware is not included in the published technical page.

Two-up decision points
Take your passenger to the test ride if possible. Check the passenger footpeg position, grab points, seat length and whether the windshield creates buffeting at your passenger’s helmet. The BMW R 12 is the logical choice for a rider who values lower stated mass, a boxer engine and shaft-drive architecture and is comfortable selecting travel equipment separately. The 2026 Heritage Classic is the stronger fit for riders who want a low laden seat, big-twin torque and factory-fitted luggage and wind protection for two-up or weekend travel.
