Short answer: On published specifications, the BMW R 12 G/S is the more overtly enduro-focused motorcycle. Its standard 21-inch front wheel, 9.4 inches of ground clearance, long-travel suspension and standard Enduro riding mode point toward rougher dirt roads and more deliberate off-road use. A Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled can make more sense if you prefer the Scrambler concept, a particular used-bike price or condition, and—depending on year—the lower seat and smaller-displacement package. The crucial qualification is that “Desert Sled” does not describe one unchanged specification: Ducati’s 2019 and 2022 documents show materially different wheels, suspension travel and seat heights.
This is a specification-based buying guide, not a back-to-back test. Neither manufacturer’s figures establish which motorcycle handles better, feels lighter, lasts longer or is faster in real riding.

What the comparison actually covers
The BMW figures below come from BMW Motorrad USA’s current technical data for the R 12 G/S, identified in BMW Group launch material as a 2026 model. The Ducati figures come from two different official documents: a 2018 technical sheet for the 2019 Desert Sled and a 2022 Scrambler range sheet. They should not be blended into one notional Ducati.

That date difference changes the buying question. A 2019 Desert Sled with an 18-inch front wheel, 150 mm of suspension travel and a 798 mm seat is a different fit and equipment proposition from the Desert Sled variant listed in the 2022 range data with a 19-inch front wheel, 200 mm of travel and an 860 mm seat. Before comparing prices, insurance or accessories, identify the Ducati’s model year, trim and market specification from its VIN, registration documents and original equipment.

The mixed units and years are intentional. BMW publishes a fully fueled US weight, while Ducati’s 2019 figure is a wet mass; the 2022 document does not provide a directly comparable mass in the cited table. Likewise, the Ducati consumption numbers are separate manufacturer figures, not a controlled economy test.
Engine character and paved-road use
BMW’s 1,170 cc boxer
The R 12 G/S uses BMW’s 1,170 cc air/oil-cooled boxer. BMW’s US technical page lists 109 hp at 7,000 rpm and 85 lb-ft at 6,500 rpm. Those are manufacturer outputs at specified engine speeds; they do not predict a particular rider’s acceleration, gearing preference or fuel economy.
The boxer’s displacement is substantially larger than the Ducati’s 803 cc engine. That difference is useful when describing the motorcycles’ design intent, but it is not a shortcut to a handling verdict. Weight, gearing, throttle calibration, tires, rider skill and terrain all affect how either motorcycle behaves. Treat the BMW’s output as a specification advantage for riders who want a larger, higher-output platform, not as proof that it will be quicker or easier in every situation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The Desert Sled documents identify an 803 cc, air-cooled L-twin. Ducati’s 2019 sheet lists the 803 cc engine and the 2022 range document continues that displacement for the listed Desert Sled variant. The cited sheets do not provide directly comparable horsepower and torque figures, so a numerical engine-output ranking would be unsupported.
The 803 cc engine is part of the Scrambler 800 family. Ducati’s 2019 US release positioned the Desert Sled as an off-road-capable Scrambler and reported Cornering ABS as standard across the Scrambler 800 range. “Off-road capable” is Ducati’s positioning statement, not an independent finding about difficult trails.

What this means on pavement
Both motorcycles are intended to cover ordinary paved roads as well as unpaved routes, but the documents do not establish which is smoother, more comfortable at highway speed or more economical in your use. Choose based on the engine size, controls, riding position and dealer-supported test ride you can actually evaluate. Do not infer a real-world range comparison by dividing either tank size by the other model’s consumption figure: the BMW page does not supply a matching consumption number, and the Ducati values come from different model years.
Wheels, suspension and dirt-road intent
Why the BMW’s 21-inch front matters
The standard R 12 G/S configuration has a 21-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear, 8.2 inches of front travel, 7.8 inches of rear travel and 9.4 inches of ground clearance. BMW also lists Rain, Road and Enduro riding modes as standard. Taken together, those published dimensions make the BMW the more explicitly enduro-oriented configuration in this comparison.

A larger front wheel is commonly selected for its ability to roll over holes, ruts and abrupt edges, but wheel diameter alone does not guarantee traction or control. Tire construction, tire pressure, suspension setup, rider technique and the obstacle itself remain decisive. The BMW’s standard data describe its intended envelope; they do not substitute for instruction or an appropriate tire choice.
BMW’s launch material describes an Enduro Pro mode as optional or package equipment. Confirm whether a particular motorcycle has that equipment rather than assuming every R 12 G/S includes it. The same release attributes the following promotional statement to Boxer Series Project Manager Norbert Rebholz: “With the air/oil-cooled boxer engine from the R 12 family, the new BMW R 12 G/S has an ideal enduro drive for ambitious off-road fun. Its ample torque and the ‘ENDURO’ and ‘ENDURO PRO’ riding modes, which are fully tailored to off-road use, make it a perfect partner for dedicated off-road riding.” That is BMW Group marketing language, not an independent test result.
Why the Ducati year changes the answer
The 2019 Desert Sled sheet lists an 18-inch front wheel, 17-inch rear wheel and 150 mm of travel at both ends. The 2022 range sheet lists a Desert Sled variant with a 19-inch front, 17-inch rear, 200 mm of travel and Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires. Those are meaningful differences in wheel format, suspension movement and standard tire specification.

Do not describe every Desert Sled as having 200 mm of travel or a 19-inch front wheel. Conversely, do not judge a 2022 motorcycle by the 2019 specification. Ask the seller to show the exact equipment fitted to the motorcycle in front of you, including wheel markings, shock and fork components, and tire sizes printed on the sidewalls.
Technical trail versus maintained dirt
For maintained gravel, fire roads and occasional rough tracks, either specification may be workable with appropriate tires and a rider who stays within the motorcycle’s limits. For more technical terrain, the BMW’s published 21-inch front, greater ground clearance and standard Enduro mode give it the clearer paper advantage. That is an interpretation of the dimensions and controls, not a claim that it will outperform the Ducati in every trail test.
Rider fit, seat height and mass
BMW fit
BMW lists a 33.9-inch seat and a 504 lb road-ready weight with the motorcycle fully fueled. A tall seat and substantial fueled mass can affect how confidently a rider stops on an off-camber surface, turns around on a narrow track or catches a slide at walking speed. Those effects vary with inseam, footwear, strength, suspension sag and experience, so no universal “fits” verdict is possible from the number alone.
Ducati fit
The 2019 Desert Sled sheet lists a 798 mm seat, while the 2022 variant lists 860 mm. The latter is effectively in the same height range as the BMW’s 33.9-inch specification; the former is materially lower. A used-bike shopper who remembers the lower early Desert Sled can be surprised by a later motorcycle’s taller stance.
Ducati’s 2019 sheet reports 189 kg wet. Because BMW’s 504 lb figure is fully fueled and the 2022 Ducati mass is not stated in the cited table, these figures should not be treated as a precise apples-to-apples weight test. Sit on the exact bike, place both feet in the positions you use at a stop, and repeat the check with luggage or guards if you intend to add them.

A practical fit check
- With the motorcycle upright on level ground, check whether you can operate the front brake and clutch without stretching your wrists.
- Move to a normal stop and note whether one or both feet reach the ground naturally; do not rely on tiptoe balance on loose surfaces.
- Turn the bars fully left and right while seated to make sure the tank, controls and your knees do not conflict.
- Repeat the exercise on a slight camber and on the surface you actually ride, such as gravel or a sloped parking area.
- Ask the dealer or seller whether the suspension has been lowered, raised or re-sprung, because modifications can change both reach and handling.
Electronics, braking and equipment verification
The BMW US specification lists Rain, Road and Enduro modes as standard. BMW’s launch material discusses Enduro Pro as optional/package equipment, so inspect the bike’s build sheet or menu screen for that feature. Package contents can vary by market.
Ducati’s 2019 US release reports Cornering ABS as standard on all Scrambler 800 models, which includes the Desert Sled in that range. Verify the year and market of a used motorcycle, confirm that the ABS warning light performs its normal start-up check, and inspect for non-standard brake or wheel changes. The cited material does not establish a complete, year-by-year Ducati electronics list, so do not assume that a feature from one trim is present on another.
Fuel, mass and running-distance expectations
BMW lists a 4.1-US-gallon usable tank for the R 12 G/S. Ducati’s 2019 sheet lists a 13.5-liter tank. The 2019 Ducati table gives 5.1 L/100 km and 119 g/km CO2; the 2022 table gives 5.2 L/100 km and 120 g/km for its listed lineup. These values come from different model-year documents and test methods. They are useful for identifying the published specification, not for promising a particular tank range.
Range depends on speed, wind, surface, tire pressure, load, temperature and how much fuel you reserve. Plan an off-road route using a conservative personal measurement after you have ridden the exact motorcycle, rather than relying on a catalog estimate. Carry the fuel and recovery equipment required by the route, especially where stations are sparse.

Either motorcycle can be considered, so prioritize physical fit, control layout, tires and the condition of the individual bike. A 2019 Desert Sled’s 798 mm seat may be attractive to a rider who finds the BMW tall, while a 2022 Desert Sled’s 860 mm seat removes much of that distinction. The specification year matters more than the model name on the tank.
You want a used Ducati and are choosing among listings
Compare like with like: 2019 with 2019, 2022 with 2022, and the same market where possible. Record front-wheel diameter, suspension travel, seat height, tire model, ABS equipment and service history for every candidate. A lower price can reflect age, worn suspension, damaged spokes or missing protection rather than a bargain.

- Identity: Match the VIN, registration year and model designation to the claimed 2019 or 2022 specification.
- Wheels: Confirm whether the front is 18 or 19 inches and inspect rims, spokes and wheel bearings for impact damage or corrosion.
- Suspension: Check fork tubes, seals, shock body and linkage for leaks, dents or play. Verify that the travel and components have not been altered.
- Tires: Read the sidewall size and model. The 2022 document specifically lists Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires; worn or substituted tires change the motorcycle you are evaluating.
- Brakes and ABS: Confirm normal warning-light behavior, disc condition and lever feel. Ducati’s cited 2019 release identifies Cornering ABS as standard for the Scrambler 800 range.
- Protection and controls: Inspect the skid plate, engine cases, handlebars, levers, foot pegs and radiator area for evidence of a fall or rock strike.
- Maintenance: Request dated service records, cold-start access and confirmation of any suspension, exhaust, mapping or electrical modifications.
- Road legality: Check that lighting, emissions equipment, noise level and registration comply with your jurisdiction.
How to test-fit either motorcycle before purchase
- Start cold: Listen for abnormal noises and confirm that warning lights behave normally before the engine warms.
- Cover ordinary roads: Check clutch effort, throttle response, gearbox action, braking and mirror position without treating the ride as a performance test.
- Use a legal unpaved surface: At low speed, assess reach to the ground, standing position, bar clearance and confidence on loose material.
- Repeat stops: Make controlled stops on level and slightly uneven ground to expose seat-height and mass issues that a moving test can hide.
- Review the exact build: After riding, compare the motorcycle’s wheel sizes, tires, modes and accessories with the seller’s written specification.
Bottom-line decision
Choose the BMW R 12 G/S if your priority is the more overtly enduro-oriented published package and you can confidently manage its 33.9-inch seat and 504 lb fully fueled mass. Choose a Ducati Desert Sled when the specific motorcycle’s year, fit, condition and Scrambler character meet your needs—while verifying those details rather than assuming every Desert Sled has the same 18- or 19-inch wheel, 150- or 200-mm suspension travel, or seat height. A local test ride and an inspection of the exact motorcycle are essential because the available evidence supports a careful specification comparison, not a universal real-world winner.
