BMW Group plans to reduce the number of its divisions and associated management roles by 20% by mid-2027, with a comparable reduction at organizational levels below. The company also says it will use AI more systematically across its business—but it has not said that AI alone is driving the restructuring or disclosed how many people will be affected.
What BMW’s 20% target covers
BMW’s September 30, 2026 announcement concerns the number of divisions and the management roles associated with them. The company also expects a comparable reduction at organizational levels below. That is not the same as saying that 20% of all BMW managers, or 20% of its total workforce, will lose their jobs.
BMW has not published an absolute headcount, a breakdown by location or business unit, or a role-by-role account of the changes. Its announcement describes a planned organizational reduction, not a completed round of cuts. BMW Group’s announcement does not support turning the 20% figure into a number of jobs.
When the changes are planned
BMW’s target is to complete the reduction by mid-2027. The company says it agreed significant personnel-structure adjustments with its Works Council in July 2026 and that the plan includes a voluntary severance program. The announcement does not specify how many employees may take severance or how the changes will be distributed across the organization.

How AI fits into the restructuring
BMW presents AI as part of a broader effort to streamline processes, speed decisions and strengthen competitiveness—not as the stated sole cause of the management changes. The company intends to use AI across areas including development, purchasing, production, sales, marketing and aftersales.
Development and production
In vehicle development, BMW says AI agents are intended to support work on technical requirements, testing and release. In production, the company says AI systems are already used in many process steps. The announcement does not quantify the effect of these applications on staffing or explain how much they will contribute to the planned structural reduction.

BMW’s stated rationale
BMW CFO Walter Mertl said that consistent use of agentic AI across the company would support “more agile and efficient development, leaner structures and faster decision-making.” CEO Milan Nedeljković described the workforce restructuring programme as a lever for improving structures and the cost base amid intensifying competition. These statements set out BMW’s rationale; they do not establish a measured job impact attributable to AI.

The restructuring announcement also sits alongside BMW’s financial objectives. The company set an automotive-segment EBIT margin target of 3–5% for 2028 and said it aims to return to its long-term 8–10% target range by the start of the next decade. Those are company targets, not reported results or independent forecasts. BMW’s release links its efficiency measures to profitability and resilience.
