The BMW N57S is the high-output, variable tri-turbo version of BMW’s N57 six-cylinder diesel family. In BMW’s 2013 7 Series specifications, the 750d xDrive uses “BMW TwinPower Turbo (Variable Tri Turbo)” and produces 280 kW (381 hp) and 740 Nm, while the 740d xDrive uses “BMW TwinPower Turbo (Variable Twin Turbo)” and produces 230 kW (313 hp) and 630 Nm. Those figures describe specific 7 Series models, not every N57 engine. The later 2016 750d/750Ld switched to four turbochargers, so it should not be confused with the N57S three-turbo system.
What the N57S triple-turbo designation means
N57 is an engine family name, not a single specification. BMW produced several versions of its six-cylinder, in-line diesel engine, with different turbocharger arrangements and outputs. The “N57S” label is commonly used for the high-output variant associated with variable tri-turbocharging. BMW’s own technical-training material presents N57 as a family with multiple variants, which is why an accurate comparison must identify the engine code, vehicle and model year rather than assume that every N57 has the same hardware.

In the 7 Series technical specification cited below, BMW describes the 750d xDrive’s system as BMW TwinPower Turbo (Variable Tri Turbo). “TwinPower Turbo” is BMW’s marketing and technology label; the parenthetical “Variable Tri Turbo” identifies the three-turbo arrangement in that particular specification. The 740d xDrive is listed as BMW TwinPower Turbo (Variable Twin Turbo), meaning a two-turbo arrangement.
The practical difference is therefore not simply “an N57 versus a different diesel.” It is a comparison between two applications of the N57 family, with the 750d receiving a more powerful turbocharging configuration and a higher engine specification.

BMW’s N57TU Diesel Engine Technical Training Manual is useful background because it documents the family structure. It does not support treating the N57 name as one universal tune or one universal turbo layout.
BMW’s published 740d and 750d figures
The clearest apples-to-apples figures come from BMW’s 7 Series specification attachment for the 740d xDrive and 750d xDrive. Both entries are vehicle specifications, so they show how BMW rated those particular models. They do not isolate turbocharger count as the only reason for the output gap; engine calibration, airflow hardware, fueling, cooling and other application details can also differ.
| Model | BMW turbo description | Rated power | Peak torque |
|---|---|---|---|
| 740d xDrive | BMW TwinPower Turbo (Variable Twin Turbo) | 230 kW / 313 hp | 630 Nm |
| 750d xDrive | BMW TwinPower Turbo (Variable Tri Turbo) | 280 kW / 381 hp | 740 Nm |
These numbers are taken from BMW Group’s 2013 technical specification attachment, “Specifications: BMW 7 Series 730d xDrive, 740d xDrive, 750d xDrive”. The 750d is rated 50 kW (68 hp) higher than the 740d and 110 Nm higher in peak torque. Expressed as a percentage of the 740d’s rating, that is approximately 21.7% more power and 17.5% more torque, calculated from BMW’s published figures. Those calculations describe the listed models only.

How two and three turbochargers differ in principle
Twin-turbo diesel arrangement
A twin-turbo diesel uses two turbochargers to move and compress intake air. Depending on the engine design, the turbochargers may be arranged in parallel, sequentially or through a staged control strategy. BMW’s 740d entry calls its system “Variable Twin Turbo,” but the specification sheet does not provide a complete component-level description of how every operating stage is controlled.
Using two turbochargers gives the engine designer more airflow capacity and more control options than a single turbo. A smaller turbo can respond effectively at lower engine speeds, while a larger unit can provide the airflow required at higher load; alternatively, two similarly sized units can share the work. The exact behavior depends on the engine’s control software, exhaust routing, compressor and turbine sizing, and operating conditions. Those general engineering possibilities should not be mistaken for a claim about a specific 740d component layout unless BMW documents it for that vehicle.
Tri-turbo diesel arrangement
A tri-turbo system adds a third turbocharger and another control stage to the engine’s air-management system. In a high-output diesel such as the 750d application, that additional stage gives BMW more hardware with which to balance low-speed response, mid-range airflow and high-load capacity. The three units do not necessarily operate at identical speeds or contribute equally at every engine speed; the “variable” description indicates that the system changes its operating strategy as conditions change.

More turbochargers do not automatically mean three times the boost or a fixed percentage increase in power. Turbo count is one part of a complete engine system. The rated 381 hp and 740 Nm of the listed 750d result from the complete vehicle-engine calibration, not from a turbocharger count viewed in isolation.

“Variable” signals that turbocharger operation is managed across different load and speed conditions rather than remaining in one fixed mode. It does not, by itself, state whether the engine uses a particular sequence, valve arrangement or boost pressure. BMW’s public 7 Series table supplies the twin- versus tri-turbo labels and output ratings, while the technical-training manual establishes that N57 has multiple variants. Neither source provides a controlled test that attributes the entire power difference to the number of turbochargers.
How much stronger is the N57S 750d than the twin-turbo 740d?
For the two BMW 7 Series entries, the answer is straightforward:
- Power: 750d xDrive 280 kW (381 hp) versus 740d xDrive 230 kW (313 hp), a difference of 50 kW or 68 hp.
- Torque: 750d xDrive 740 Nm versus 740d xDrive 630 Nm, a difference of 110 Nm.
The 750d’s higher rating means BMW positioned it above the 740d in the model range. It does not prove that a tri-turbo N57 in every BMW vehicle will produce 381 hp, nor that every twin-turbo N57 will produce 313 hp. BMW used the same family name across multiple variants, and vehicle-specific calibration and equipment matter.
When comparing used cars, read the engine code and factory specification for the exact vehicle. A badge such as 740d or 750d identifies a model level in a particular generation; it is not a substitute for checking the production year, drivetrain and engine version.
Why the N57 family causes confusion
One family, several outputs
Engine families are developed as platforms. Manufacturers can change turbocharger count, injection calibration, emissions equipment, cooling capacity and software while retaining the family designation. Consequently, “N57” alone is not enough information to determine whether an engine is twin-turbo, tri-turbo or another configuration.

Model badges are generation-specific
“740d” and “750d” are not timeless engineering definitions. BMW can change the engine fitted to a badge when it updates a model generation. A 750d from one period may therefore use a different turbocharger architecture from a 750d from a later period.
This is especially important for the 2016 update. BMW announced that the new 750d and 750Ld used four turbochargers, producing 294 kW (400 hp) and 760 Nm. BMW described that engine as replacing the previous three-turbo system. The announcement is dated May 17, 2016, and is available in BMW’s release, “Celebrating its premiere in the BMW 7 Series model range: the world’s most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine.”

The three-turbo N57S comparison belongs to the earlier 750d specification represented by the 381 hp, 740 Nm entry. BMW’s later announcement gives a different configuration and different ratings:
| Application | Turbocharger count | Rated power | Peak torque | How to classify it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Earlier 750d xDrive specification | Variable tri-turbo | 280 kW / 381 hp | 740 Nm | N57S-era three-turbo comparison |
| 2016 750d/750Ld announcement | Four turbochargers | 294 kW / 400 hp | 760 Nm | Successor configuration, not the N57S tri-turbo |
The 2016 figures are quoted as BMW’s announced ratings for the new engine. They should not be inserted into a table comparing the earlier N57S tri-turbo with the 740d twin-turbo. Doing so mixes generations and makes the turbo-count comparison misleading.
What the power and torque gap means for a buyer
Acceleration and load capability
On paper, the 750d’s 381 hp and 740 Nm give it a higher performance ceiling than the 740d’s 313 hp and 630 Nm. The extra torque is particularly relevant to the engine’s ability to deliver force under load, while the higher power rating describes its capacity to sustain output as engine speed rises. Actual acceleration also depends on vehicle weight, transmission gearing, traction, software and test conditions, none of which are established by the cited specification table.

A seller’s phrase such as “N57 triple turbo” is incomplete without the vehicle and year. It may refer to the earlier 750d application, while a later 750d can use the four-turbo successor described by BMW in 2016.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Maintenance, durability and fuel economy: what the cited evidence does not establish
It is tempting to assume that the tri-turbo engine is automatically less reliable, more expensive to repair or less economical than the twin-turbo version because it has an additional turbocharger. The supplied BMW specifications and training reference do not establish those outcomes.
They do not provide a controlled durability comparison, a maintenance-cost schedule, repair-failure statistics, identical-condition fuel-economy testing or a component-by-component complexity analysis for the 740d and 750d. Therefore, no evidence-based conclusion can be drawn here that one configuration will last longer, cost more to service or use more fuel in every circumstance.
For an ownership decision, obtain records for the specific vehicle and verify the exact engine variant. Turbocharger replacement hardware is not universal: fitment can vary by engine variant, vehicle and turbo stage. A generic search for “BMW N57 turbocharger” is not enough to select a part. Confirm the engine code and the original component or catalog number with a qualified BMW specialist before ordering.

Step 2: Confirm the engine variant
Use factory documentation or a BMW technical information source to confirm the full engine code. The N57 family label alone does not identify the turbo configuration.
Step 3: Match the factory output
Compare the documented rating with BMW’s figures for that model and generation. For the cited 7 Series specification, 740d xDrive corresponds to 313 hp and 630 Nm, while 750d xDrive corresponds to 381 hp and 740 Nm.
Step 4: Inspect records rather than infer condition from turbo count
Review service invoices, oil-service intervals, cooling-system work, emissions-system repairs and any turbocharger replacement documentation. Turbo count tells you how the engine was designed; it does not reveal the maintenance condition of an individual car.
Step 5: Match replacement parts to the exact application
Before buying a turbocharger, actuator or related hose, match the vehicle identification number, engine code and turbo position. A part listed for an N57 may fit only one variant or one stage of a multi-turbo system.
Common comparison mistakes
Calling every N57 a tri-turbo
The N57 designation covers multiple variants. The 740d and 750d entries in BMW’s table demonstrate that two N57-family applications can use different turbo descriptions.
Using 2016 figures for the earlier comparison
The 400 hp, 760 Nm four-turbo announcement belongs to the successor configuration. It is not the rating for the earlier three-turbo N57S comparison.
Attributing the whole output difference to turbo count
The published table shows a correlation between the 740d twin-turbo entry and the 750d tri-turbo entry. It does not provide a controlled experiment that holds every other engine and vehicle variable constant.
Assuming a badge guarantees one engine
Model badges can continue across generations while the engine architecture changes. Always pair the badge with the year and technical documentation.
Ordering a universal replacement turbo
Multi-turbo systems have variant- and position-specific hardware. Confirm fitment before purchase; no universal N57 turbocharger compatibility is established by BMW’s general family documentation.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways for the N57S versus twin-turbo question
- The N57S is the high-output N57 variant associated with BMW’s variable tri-turbo system.
- In BMW’s cited 7 Series specifications, the 750d xDrive tri-turbo is rated at 381 hp and 740 Nm.
- The 740d xDrive variable twin-turbo is rated at 313 hp and 630 Nm in the same specification set.
- The listed 750d therefore has 68 hp and 110 Nm more than the listed 740d.
- Those are model-specific ratings, not universal outputs for every N57 twin- or tri-turbo engine.
- BMW’s 2016 750d/750Ld successor used four turbochargers and produced 400 hp and 760 Nm; it should be kept separate from the N57S tri-turbo comparison.
- The available sources do not prove a universal difference in reliability, repair cost or fuel economy.
