BMW Motorrad’s Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) lets riders choose who selects gears: the rider shifts with the foot lever in M mode, or ASA selects gears automatically in D mode. In both modes, ASA operates the clutch; an ASA-equipped motorcycle has no clutch lever. The “magic button” is the handlebar control for switching between those shift modes—not a switch that restores a conventional manual clutch.
What the ASA button changes—and what it does not
The button switches between M (manual gear selection) and D (automatic gear selection), and BMW says riders can change modes while riding. ASA continues to control the clutch in either mode. BMW also says the bike restarts in M mode by default.

How manual and automatic modes work
M mode: rider-requested shifts
In M mode, the rider requests upshifts and downshifts through the foot gearshift lever. ASA handles clutch operation and coordinates the gearshift, so M mode does not mean the rider has a clutch lever or operates a conventional clutch.
D mode: system-selected gears
In D mode, ASA selects gears according to the riding situation. BMW lists riding mode, engine speed, throttle position, braking and lean angle among the inputs it considers. The rider continues to control acceleration and braking while the system chooses gears.

Starting, stopping and protective intervention
ASA manages clutch operation when pulling away and stopping regardless of the selected transmission mode. BMW’s operating information also describes intervention at RPM limits and downshifting below a gear-dependent minimum to help prevent the engine from stalling. These functions remain relevant even when the rider selects gears in M mode.
Which motorcycles are identified with ASA?
BMW Motorrad identifies the R 1300 GS and R 1300 GS Adventure as the initial models offered with ASA from model year 2025. BMW’s R 1300 GS family page presents a GS equipped with ASA and offers a route to request a test ride. Availability and equipment can differ by country, model year and individual configuration, so check the specific motorcycle with a local BMW Motorrad retailer.

BMW’s materials describe ASA as part of the motorcycle’s technology, not as a separately fitted accessory. They do not establish an aftermarket retrofit kit or identify a separate part that enables ASA. Confirm equipment on the exact bike rather than assuming an existing GS can be converted.

The choice is about who selects gears, not whether the rider gets a clutch lever. Riders who want to choose each gear can use M and the foot lever; riders who prefer the system to choose gears can select D. Since starting and stopping clutch operation is automated in both, neither mode recreates the conventional manual-clutch experience.
