The new car is positioned as the first fully electric BMW 3 Series—not as a return of the earlier compact i3 in the same body style. BMW began series production in Munich in August 2026; BMW USA says the sedan is expected to be available in the United States starting in 2027.
What is the new BMW i3?
The new i3 is a battery-electric sedan and the second model in BMW’s Neue Klasse family. BMW describes it as the first fully electric BMW 3 Series. Its name recalls the earlier i3, but the new car is a different proposition: a four-door, 3 Series-style sedan rather than the earlier compact i3.
BMW’s launch announcement highlighted a new design language, an updated display and operating concept, and the Heart of Joy driving system. Those are BMW’s descriptions of the car’s design and technology; they do not by themselves establish equipment availability or specifications for every market and trim. BMW’s March 19, 2026 announcement introduced the model.
How far can the new BMW i3 go?
BMW announced a range of up to 900 km under the WLTP test cycle for the i3 50 xDrive, but called the figure preliminary because binding WLTP values were not yet available when it made the announcement. WLTP is a standardized test measure, not a promise of the distance every driver will cover. BMW notes that actual range can vary with load, driving style, route, weather, climate-system use, tires, and battery condition.

For the United States, BMW’s product page estimates up to 440 miles, based on preliminary BMW AG tests using EPA testing procedures. That is a US-market estimate, not a reported real-world result or a direct conversion of the European WLTP figure. What are the i3 50 xDrive’s performance and size figures?
BMW’s October 1, 2026 3 Series announcement lists the i3 50 xDrive at 345 kW (469 hp), with a 0–100 km/h time of 4.7 seconds. These are BMW’s figures for that trim; they should not be assumed to apply to other versions. BMW’s 2026 3 Series announcement gives the performance specifications.

BMW Germany’s technical-data page lists the i3 50 xDrive sedan at 4,760 mm long and 2,280 kg unladen. Those dimensions and weight are specific to the German-market listing and named variant. BMW Germany’s technical data provides the figures.
When does the new BMW i3 come out?
The car is already in series production: BMW says production began at its Munich plant in August 2026. BMW also said order books opened ahead of schedule in mid-June and characterized customer interest as strong. That is BMW’s account, not independently verified sales data. BMW’s August 6 production update confirms the start of series production.

Availability depends on market. BMW USA says the i3 Sedan is expected to be available in the United States starting in 2027. The cited announcements do not establish a complete delivery calendar for every country, so buyers elsewhere should check their local BMW source for ordering and delivery timing.

BMW confirms that the i3 is fully electric, but that alone does not confirm compatibility with a particular home charger. Before choosing or installing charging equipment, confirm the vehicle’s local connector and charging specifications and have the installation assessed for the property’s electrical setup.
