The right BMW starts with four decisions: body style and size, combustion versus plug-in-hybrid or battery-electric power, rear- versus all-wheel drive, and standard versus M performance. In the U.S. directory BMW displayed on October 13, 2026, the range spans compact X1 and X2 SUVs, mid-size X3 and X5 models, the large X7, coupe-style SUVs, sedans from the 2 Series Gran Coupe through the 7 Series, electric i models, plug-in hybrids and dedicated M cars. There is no universally best BMW; the best match depends on your space, budget, charging access and driving priorities.
BMW’s U.S. model families at a glance
BMW organizes its U.S. range by body style rather than one simple size ladder. BMW USA’s live directory (accessed October 13, 2026) listed these SUV families: X1, X2, X3, X5, X6, X7, XM, iX3 and iX. Its sedan area listed the 2 Series Gran Coupe, 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, M3, i5 and i7, while the broader directory also includes the 4 Series Gran Coupe and several coupes, convertibles and touring vehicles. The directory is dynamic, and a listed family does not guarantee that every engine, trim or drivetrain is available at every dealer.

Series numbers identify the family and approximate position
Within the sedan range, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is the compact four-door option, the 3 Series is the traditional four-door sports sedan, the 5 Series moves into a larger executive class, and the 7 Series is the flagship. Numbering is a family guide, not a promise that two cars with adjacent numbers share dimensions, equipment or powertrains. The 4 Series Gran Coupe adds a lower-roof, more style-led four-door form, and BMW separately lists coupes, convertibles and touring vehicles.

X identifies SUV families, not a single size
X1 and X2 occupy the compact end. X3 and X5 cover the middle of the SUV range, with X5 positioned as the larger, more substantial choice. X7 is the largest and most luxurious SUV in BMW’s own description. X2 and X6 use coupe-style rooflines, so their appeal is design and a sportier profile rather than maximum box-shaped cargo utility. XM is a performance-focused SUV family rather than simply a larger X model.
The i prefix and e suffix describe electrification
BMW’s 2026 U.S. warranty booklet states: “The Model descriptions with the i prefix are battery electric vehicles (BEV) and the Model descriptions with the e suffix are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV).” That gives you a useful first check: an i5 or i7 is battery-electric, while an e-designated model is a plug-in hybrid that combines an engine with a chargeable battery.
BMW also says the i suffix on internal-combustion model descriptions is being phased out. Do not infer a vehicle’s powertrain from an older badge, a dealer listing or a used-car advertisement alone; verify the exact model year and specification sheet.

sDrive, xDrive and M xDrive
sDrive denotes rear-wheel drive in the model versions where BMW uses that label. xDrive denotes all-wheel drive. BMW says its SUVs can be equipped with xDrive, but the wording does not mean every SUV version is standard all-wheel drive: the live directory includes rear-wheel-drive configurations such as the X5 sDrive40i. Confirm the drivetrain on the exact trim you are considering.
High-performance M SUVs may use M xDrive, which BMW describes as an M-specific all-wheel-drive system with adjustable driving modes. That is different from assuming every xDrive model has the same hardware or calibration.
Choosing by body style, passenger space and cargo
Choose an X1 or X2 for compact dimensions
The X1 is the straightforward compact SUV choice when an elevated seating position and manageable footprint matter most. The X2 uses a coupe-style body, which may suit you if exterior shape and a lower roofline matter more than the most upright cargo-opening design. Verify rear-seat headroom, child-seat fit and cargo measurements for the model year; the family labels alone do not establish those figures.
Move to X3 or X5 for broader everyday use
X3 and X5 are the middle of BMW’s SUV strategy. The X3 is the logical step up from a compact SUV, while the X5 targets buyers who want a larger vehicle and more substantial equipment. The X5 range includes the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid. BMW says that model can be charged at home or at public locations, making it relevant when you can regularly plug in but still want an engine for longer trips.

Select X7 when maximum SUV size and luxury are priorities
BMW describes the X7 as its largest and most luxurious SUV. It is the family to investigate when your priorities are the greatest passenger and cargo envelope BMW offers in an SUV body. Obtain the exact seating configuration and measurements for your market and model year rather than assuming every X7 has the same number of usable seats or cargo volume.
Consider X6 when you want an SUV with a coupe profile
The X6 follows the same coupe-style SUV idea as the X2 but at a larger scale. Its sloping roof is a design and driving-position choice; compare its rear headroom and cargo opening directly with an X5 before buying if you routinely carry tall passengers, bulky equipment or a large dog crate.
Use sedans, coupes, convertibles and touring models for a different mission
The 3 Series is BMW’s four-door sports-sedan reference point. The 5 Series adds executive-car scale, and the 7 Series is the flagship. The 2 Series Gran Coupe serves buyers who want a smaller four-door form, while the 4 Series Gran Coupe, two-door coupes, convertibles and touring vehicles provide alternatives to an SUV. Compare the actual seating, trunk or hatch dimensions and door count of the specific version; a body-style name is not a substitute for a measurement.
Choosing combustion, plug-in hybrid or battery electric
Combustion models
Combustion BMWs remain the simplest choice when public charging is limited, your driving includes frequent long trips without reliable charging stops, or you prefer refueling in minutes. Engine, transmission and drivetrain availability vary by family and model year, so ask for a build sheet rather than assuming a familiar engine designation carries over.
Plug-in hybrids
A plug-in hybrid such as the BMW X5 xDrive50e can be charged at home or in public and still has an engine for trips beyond its electric operating capability. Its value depends on charging discipline: regular charging lets you use the battery portion as intended, while never plugging in leaves you carrying a heavier hybrid system without receiving its full benefit. BMW’s e suffix is the clearest naming clue, but verify the exact specification.
Battery-electric models
BMW’s electric families include i4, i5 and i7 sedans or Gran Coupes, plus the iX SUV; the all-model directory also displays iX3. A BEV is a strong fit when you can charge at home, at work or at dependable public stations and can plan around charging time on longer journeys.
BMW cautions that estimated EV range assumes a fully charged battery and ideal conditions. Actual range changes with model, wheel and tire selection, driving style, accessories, traffic, outside temperature and charging frequency. BMW also notes that some recently released model-year ranges may not yet be EPA-certified. Treat a displayed estimate as a comparison point, not a guaranteed real-world distance, and check the certification status of the exact vehicle.

For cargo planning, BMW publishes up to 77.3 cubic feet for the iX with its seats folded. That is a BMW-published figure, not an independent measurement; test your own stroller, luggage or equipment in the vehicle you intend to buy.
Standard BMW, M Performance and full M: what changes
BMW’s range separates ordinary models from M performance versions and full M cars. Standard models emphasize broad daily usability. M performance versions add a stronger performance orientation while retaining more everyday compromise than a dedicated M variant. Full M cars, including the M3 sedan family, are engineered around high performance and may bring firmer responses, specialized drivetrains and higher equipment or running-cost expectations.
BMW also applies M engineering to SUVs, including M versions with M xDrive and adjustable modes. These labels describe BMW’s positioning; the supplied specifications do not establish independent acceleration, braking, fuel-economy, reliability or maintenance-cost rankings. If performance is your priority, compare the exact engine, suspension, brakes, seats, tires and warranty terms on the build sheet.
What BMW models cost in the U.S.
The following starting MSRPs were displayed in BMW USA’s live directory on October 13, 2026. They are BMW-published starting figures, not dealer transaction prices.
| Model or version | Displayed starting MSRP | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| X1 | $43,200 | BMW USA directory starting MSRP |
| 3 Series | $48,000 | BMW USA directory starting MSRP |
| X5 sDrive40i | $68,300 | Specific rear-wheel-drive X5 version shown by BMW |
| X7 xDrive40i | $87,500 | Specific all-wheel-drive X7 version shown by BMW |
| 7 Series | $99,800 | BMW USA directory starting MSRP |
BMW says displayed MSRP may not equal a dealer’s actual sale price and excludes destination and handling, tax, title, license, registration and any adjusted market value. Use the number to place families on a budget ladder, then obtain a written local quote that itemizes those additions and the exact equipment.

Warranty points to verify before signing
BMW’s 2026 U.S. Model Year New Vehicle Limited Warranty booklet, published September 11, 2025, states that the new-vehicle limited warranty is 4 years or 50,000 miles. For battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles, it states an 8-year or 100,000-mile limited warranty for the high-voltage battery. Confirm eligibility, exclusions and the terms that apply to the exact model year and powertrain; a general brochure summary cannot replace the applicable booklet.
Quick Recap
A practical BMW buying workflow
- Set the use case. Record regular occupants, child-seat needs, cargo dimensions, parking limits and whether you need an SUV, sedan, coupe, convertible or touring body.
- Narrow the size. Start with X1/X2 for compact SUVs, X3/X5 for middle-size SUVs, X7 for BMW’s largest SUV, or the 2, 3, 5 and 7 Series for progressively larger sedan-oriented choices. Compare the X6 if a coupe-style SUV is appealing.
- Choose the powertrain. Select combustion for straightforward refueling, a PHEV when you can charge regularly but want an engine, or a BEV when charging access and route planning fit your routine.
- Check drivetrain and trim. Confirm whether the exact vehicle is sDrive rear-wheel drive, xDrive all-wheel drive or an M xDrive variant. Do not generalize from the family name.
- Separate performance from marketing labels. Identify whether the car is standard, M performance or full M, then compare the actual engine, suspension, brakes, tires and equipment.
- Price the delivered car. Start with BMW’s current MSRP, add destination and handling, taxes, registration and any dealer adjustment, and request a written quote.
- Validate electric ownership. For a BEV or PHEV, confirm home or workplace charging, public-station options, charging hardware and the model’s certified-range status. Account for cold weather, traffic and wheel choice when planning range.
- Read the model-year documents. Verify warranty coverage, battery terms, included equipment and availability for the vehicle identification number or build you are actually buying.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every X SUV is all-wheel drive. BMW says SUVs can be equipped with xDrive, while the directory shows rear-wheel-drive versions such as the X5 sDrive40i.
- Treating an EV estimate as guaranteed range. BMW explicitly lists weather, tires, accessories, traffic, driving style and charging conditions as variables.
- Using an old badge convention. BMW is phasing out the i suffix on some internal-combustion descriptions; verify the model year and powertrain.
- Comparing only starting prices. MSRP excludes destination, taxes, registration and possible market adjustments, and equipment can change the final figure substantially.
- Assuming a body style tells you the cargo answer. Check the exact seats-up and seats-folded measurements, especially when comparing X5 with X6 or X1 with X2.
- Assuming a model listed online is on a nearby lot. BMW’s directory is a live snapshot, not a guarantee of local inventory or every configuration.
