BMW M built a police-liveried M5 Touring show car, not a confirmed police fleet vehicle. It wears German-style police graphics and a roof light bar, but BMW says it is not fully equipped for patrol duty. The company has not announced an order or production run; it says it would consider building vehicles for authorities if demand were sufficient.
What is the BMW M5 Touring police car?
It is a show car based on the current-generation BMW M5 Touring (G99). BMW M says its government and special-vehicle work near Munich inspired the project. The team adapted a standard 5 Series police livery because it did not fit the M5’s wider wheel arches and bumpers. BMW M describes the vehicle and its design.
The blue, neon-yellow and retro-reflective white graphics draw on those used by German police vehicles. BMW says the design follows relevant tender requirements and keeps sensor areas and fields of view clear so driver-assistance systems are not affected. The concept also has a flatter, more aerodynamic roof light bar; BMW says the boot geometry ruled out a rear extension.
Is it ready for police patrol work?
No. Its appearance and selected equipment are not evidence that it is a commissioned operational patrol car. BMW says the show car is not fully equipped: it has no weapons on board, red seats, and a BMW emblem where a Bavarian state flag would appear on a standard patrol vehicle. BMW says those departures help prevent the unofficial show car’s occupants from being mistaken for police officers.

Sascha Eifel, BMW M’s Head of Development Authority and Special Vehicle / Functional Safety, put it plainly: “Even though the vehicle certainly looks the part, there are no weapons on board.” BMW has not published an independent patrol-use test or confirmed that this show car is certified or outfitted for service.
What are its performance and efficiency figures?
BMW M’s European presentation identifies the base M5 Touring at 727 PS and gives the model figures below. They are published specifications, not measurements of this show car in police use; actual range and consumption depend on driving and conditions.

For the US-market M5 Touring, BMW USA lists a plug-in-hybrid powertrain, an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, with 717 bhp at 5,600–6,500 rpm and 738 lb-ft at 1,800–5,400 rpm. BMW lists 0–60 mph in 3.5 seconds and a 155 mph electronically limited top speed, while cautioning that acceleration varies with specification, conditions, testing and driving style. These US-market figures should not be combined with the European figures as though they were one market’s specification.

No police force order, production plan, or police-configuration sale has been announced. BMW M’s position is conditional: Sascha Eifel says BMW would look into fulfilling an order if there were sufficient demand from authorities. That leaves a future build possible, but it is not a production commitment or evidence that a fleet customer exists.

For context, BMW Group PressClub’s 15 August 2024 launch release for the 2025 US M5 Touring gave preliminary estimated figures of 5,530 lb curb weight, 17.7–57.6 cubic feet of luggage capacity and 3.5 seconds to 60 mph. It listed a 155 mph top speed, or 190 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package, and said production would take place at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing alongside the M5 sedan.
