Those are market averages—not guaranteed prices for a particular vehicle. If you need three rows, also consider the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse, 2022 Kia Sorento and 2022 Mazda CX-9.
Under a firm $30,000 cap, the model name is only a starting point: actual price depends on mileage, trim, condition, title history and local inventory. Treat each candidate as a vehicle to evaluate, not a blanket recommendation.
How to read the under-$30,000 rankings
iSeeCars’ 2026 ranking covers used midsize SUVs one to six years old in the $25,000–$30,000 price band. Its average prices are useful for comparing candidates, but do not mean every example—or even the best-equipped examples—will fit your budget. iSeeCars says its rankings analyze data from more than 12 million cars and assess longevity, value retention and safety data; its overall scores are publisher scoring measures, not predictions about an individual vehicle.
A second set of options comes from an Edmunds guide republished by AP News in 2025. It gives approximate average prices for three 2022 three-row models. Because these figures come from a separate article and source, compare them as directional context rather than as directly comparable current local quotes.

Top used midsize SUVs to consider
2020 Toyota Highlander: strongest data-led starting point
iSeeCars gives the 2020 Highlander an 8.3 overall score and a 7.8 reliability score, with a reported average used price of $28,608. Its scoring also assigns 8.1 for value retention and 9.0 for safety. These are scores within iSeeCars’ framework, not guarantees of reliability, safety or resale value for a specific Highlander.
Model year matters near the budget ceiling: the same ranking lists 2019 Highlanders at an average of $24,954 and 2021 models at $30,877. That spread makes it especially important to check the asking price, mileage and trim on each local listing.

2021 Honda Pilot: three-row alternative with a strong ranking
The Pilot places third overall in iSeeCars’ ranking, with an 8.1 overall score, a 7.7 reliability score and a reported average price of $26,542. It is a useful candidate for shoppers who need a three-row layout and want to compare more than one high-ranking option.
Seating and equipment vary by year and trim. Kelley Blue Book’s older budget guide describes the 2018 Pilot as seating up to eight, with a 280-horsepower V6 and available all-wheel drive; those specifications should not be assumed to apply to every 2021 Pilot. Check the exact configuration and maintenance history of the vehicle you are considering.

2023 Nissan Murano: lower reported average, but confirm your space needs
iSeeCars ranks the 2023 Murano second, with an 8.2 overall score and a reported average price of $25,326. Its reliability ranking places it behind the Highlander, Pilot and Wrangler among the eligible vehicles. The cited material does not establish that the Murano offers the same three-row utility as the Pilot or Highlander, so verify seating capacity and cargo needs before choosing it for family hauling.
2022 Chevrolet Traverse: prioritize passenger and cargo room
The Edmunds guide republished by AP News reports an approximate average price of $28,300 for the 2022 Traverse. It describes generous passenger and cargo space and a 310-horsepower V6. It also notes cumbersome handling and limited rear visibility from thick roof pillars. On a test drive, pay particular attention to parking, low-speed maneuvering and sightlines.

2022 Kia Sorento: newer design, with engine and warranty details to verify
The same Edmunds/AP guide reports an approximate average price of $28,500. The Sorento was redesigned for 2021, bringing updated styling and a roomier interior. For 2022, the standard 191-horsepower four-cylinder is listed at up to 26 mpg combined; a 281-horsepower turbo engine was also available and may be harder to find within budget.
The guide mentions a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Do not assume a used vehicle has the full original coverage: eligibility and remaining coverage can depend on the first owner, transferability, time, mileage and warranty terms. Confirm coverage for the specific VIN with Kia or the selling dealer.

2022 Mazda CX-9: engaging drive, compact third row
The Edmunds/AP guide reports an approximate average price of $28,400 for the 2022 CX-9. It describes the vehicle as practical and fun to drive, with athletic handling, a 227-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and standard all-wheel drive for model year 2022. Its third row is small, so try it with the passengers who would actually use it.
Kelley Blue Book’s older guide describes the 2019 CX-9 as seating seven and having a 227-horsepower turbo engine; it notes Touring features such as leather trim and heated, powered front seats. That is year- and trim-specific information, not a guarantee of equipment on a 2022 listing. Compare the actual window sticker or vehicle equipment list.
2019 Subaru Outback: two-row, wagon-like alternative
Kelley Blue Book’s older guide presents the Outback as a two-row midsize-SUV alternative and highlights safety features, reliability and resale value. It does not establish a current under-$30,000 price for a 2019 example. Include it if a wagon-like crossover fits your definition of midsize SUV, then verify local pricing and exact-year safety information.

Choose by the job the SUV needs to do
Car and Driver says its used midsize rankings draw on roughly 200 data points spanning acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and driving enjoyment. Those same dimensions make a practical comparison checklist; weigh them against your own routes and passengers rather than treating one composite score as the answer.

Leave room for immediate maintenance rather than spending the full cap on the vehicle price alone.
- Passenger and cargo space: Distinguish two-row models from three-row models. Try the third row and cargo area with your family’s real combination of passengers, bags, strollers or equipment.
- Ownership confidence: Use ranking scores as a screening signal, then review service records, open recalls, a vehicle-history report and an independent inspection for the specific VIN.
- Driving and fuel use: Test acceleration, visibility, handling and comfort on roads like the ones you normally use. Compare likely fuel costs for your own mileage and routes.
- Safety: Look up results for the exact model year and, where relevant, trim and build date. Do not apply an award for a new 2026 model to an older used vehicle.
Check the specific vehicle before you buy
- Set the out-the-door ceiling. Include taxes, registration, dealer fees and any immediate maintenance in your $30,000 limit.
- Compare actual listings. Check mileage, trim, drivetrain, title status, equipment and asking price; a model’s reported average does not establish the value of an individual car.
- Review the VIN. Get the vehicle-history report and check for recalls and available service records. Resolve unexplained gaps or damage history before negotiating.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask the mechanic to assess condition and likely near-term repairs. A consumer OBD-II code reader can help surface diagnostic codes, but it cannot replace an inspection.
- Test the exact use case. Bring the people or cargo that matter, try child-seat access if relevant, and check visibility, parking and third-row comfort before committing.
- Verify safety and warranty details. Consult IIHS and NHTSA by exact year and configuration, and confirm any claimed warranty coverage against the VIN and written terms.
What the safety evidence does—and does not—show
The IIHS 2026 midsize-SUV list concerns specific new 2026 model-year vehicles and includes build-date qualifications for some awards. It does not establish that an older used Highlander, Pilot or other model earned the same award. Comparable year-specific IIHS and NHTSA results for every candidate are not established here; check the official databases for the precise vehicle year and configuration rather than carrying over a newer model’s recognition.
